Subject: XP Service Pack 3 and Transfer Mode
I just updated my computer to Windows XP Service Pack 3, and I've lost the ability to "charge only" while the Transfer mode is set to automatic.  Thankfully the new firmware allows me to set the option manually, but I was rather fond of the automatic setting, which would allow Windows to ask me if I wanted to access the newly-detected drive or not.  Interestingly, the vibez also now shows up as just another removable disk in My Computer instead of having its own special icon.

Thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.

It's possible that it's now being picked up in a different transfer mode. The Vibez can be set to MTP, MSC, or Automatic. (I think those are the options anyway) On my Ubuntu machine it shows up differently depending on which mode it's set to.

When I go into the Hardware Update Wizard (per RubenNYC's instructions in the FAQs), "Disk drive" is the only option.  MTP mode didn't work at all, since Window's couldn't find the necessary driver.  MSC mode works the same as automatic (as I would expect, since I think that's what's being chosen automatically).  Sooooo...nothing gained there, sadly.

My machine is XP sp3 and automatic mode works for me ok.  :-/

You say that automatic mode doesn't work anymore. So what type of device does it appear as? MSC or MTP?

I'm pretty certain that it's operating in MSC mode now; I'm less certain about what I'm accustomed to.  Besides the failure to prompt me before connecting, the other obvious change is that in My Computer, the vibez used to be identified as a vibez, with an icon that looked, well, like a vibez.  Now it is undistinguished from any other of my plain ol' external hard drives.  The behavior is slightly different too; I used to need to open the internal disk within the vibez before dragging files over.  Now I can can dump it right into the drive icon (just like any other drive).  I never used any sync software, so I (blindly) assumed I'd always been in MSC mode.  But maybe I hadn't?

Yes, I think you're right. You seem to be stuck in MSC mode now - hence the lack of the 'charging' mode.

RubenNYC's instructions shouldn't be required anymore. The were useful when the manual setting dialog wasn't there.

So you had MTP mode before right? Meaning you probably have WMP10 or WMP11 installed?

I would suggest removing the registry keys for your driver install (search forum) and start again.

I just upgraded from 10 to 11, figuring that was the easiest way to reset to WMP's defaults.  Worked like a charm!  Thanks, defector.

Interesting though. I wonder if there's anyone else out there with WMP10 who's upgraded to SP3?
