In fact, just bought a pair of custom 2's off ebay.

Supposedly shipped Thursday.  Getting a little antsy waiting for them.

I've been using a pair of 10 € Koss "The Plug" for quite a while now. The sound is great and they are very comfortable to wear (as soon as I turned the cushions around that is). Yes, I'm willing to believe you could somehow improve on both points but whether I'd like to pay 3000 % as much for a like 10 % increase... not sure. Just wondering when the first DAPs with gold inductors are going to appear. For people who somehow want their 10,000 $ home hi-fi experience while sitting in a noisy bus.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make fun of anyone. I just think everybody spending like 10 times as much on something as most other people should seriously try to do a double-blind trial first to make sure it's the equipment's quality that's making the great sound, not the pile of money he spent.

Point taken...the experience is highly personal, I think...my son can see and smell things I cannot...my mother-in-law hears things before any of the rest of us. (No further comment on that one.  :]   )

My personal casual interest is reduce the magnitude of the variables that are external to my wetware, quite within a budget though.

Perhaps.  This is the first time I have spent more than $40 on earphones, so we'll see.  Actually, I tried Koss' Plug a couple of years ago.  I bought modded ones with the ety tips off ebay.  Hated the sound.  I like my music very bright and these were all muffled.  Trust me:  This wasn't about fit or seal.  Since those I've tried several inexpensive in-ears, such as CX-300 and JVC marshmallows.  I still use the marshmallows, which I prefer with a set of Comply tips, although I am currently using stock tips (need to order more softies).  Seriously, the sound is not bad.  But with my finances improving, I wanted to try something else.

You needn't worry about the amount of money I am spending.  I'll let you know if it I think it was worth it.  I doubt I'd be able to do a double blind, since I expect the Klipsch's to be distinctive enough to tell them apart by feel.

You might be right, Mudd1.  After all,  I am listening to mp3s, so how much quality should I expect?  But I doubt what I spend is really your concern.

EDIT:  Sorry if  I sound a bit nasty.  I'm a little sensitive to the fact that I just spent 3 times as much as I ever have on earphones.

I didn't mean to lecture you. I was just a bit taken aback by the cost (I know you can pay much more) of some new technique that promises a better fit and I'm generally quizzical about promises of better sound that'd be worth paying insanely high prices. But then I guess most people (including me) have their own eccentricities and are willing to pay for it as long as they have the money to do so. There are a lot of cars out there you could easily buy thousands of earphones for each. And at least earphones don't affect other people's climate I guess ;) So sure, spend your money as you like. But keep those people in mind who swallow fancy sugar pills believing they get healthy by doing so. Aforementioned gold inductors aren't any more effective.

It's twofold, really. Most people I know simply don't care about sound quality. For them it would be a waste of money to buy other earphones than the supplied buds.

I care about sound quality enough to spend considerably more than the average person. But for me, spending more money than that, would, in turn, be a waste of money. But I am positively sure there are people with better ears than mine, and for those people spending more money than I do makes perfect sense..... up to the point where the increase in sound quality is simply inmeasurable. Then it becomes snobism.

Then there are people that drop $400 on a used rear hatchback spoiler for his car.

We all have our hobbies. ;)

See?  I save money for my earphone addiction by buying only generic sugar pills.

(actually, I can't take sugar pills, so I save even more)

Subject: A Review of Sorts (by a non-audiophile)
(Perhaps this should be moved to Accessories?)

Now that I've had them a few days (Friday to Tuesday), I'll give some impressions:

First, let me say that I have little experience with higher-end earphones ($100 and above).  In terms of in-ear models, I've really only tried the Bose (briefly, and they were only OK).  In terms of pricier stuff,  I tried the Bang & Olufsen A8 (borrowed,  for a few minutes, tops), which to me were tinny, but I'm also sure  that I didn't have them in correctly.  But that's pretty old tech, anyways.  Given all that, my impressions are based much on what I expect for the price I paid.

Anything you've read about these being finicky is true.  They come with five sets of tips, three single-flange, in three sizes, and two double-flange, in two sizes.  They come fitted with the medium single-flange.  I did not achieve the seal I wanted, so I immediately switched to the larger size.  This provided a great seal.  I listened with these for about an hour, on and off.  The highs were missing!  EQ didn't help at all.  I primarily listen on an 80GB ipod classic, but tried EQ on both my computer and my Karma.  The Karma was the most revealing and best trouble-shooting device, because I played around with the parametric, figuring there was some sort of sonic crap going on that was masking the highs.  Of course, this turned out to be ridiculous -- boosting any high frequency on my Karma had no effect at all.  It was the tips!  With some fiddling, I ended up back with the medium single-flange, which still don't provide as good a seal as some of the other in-ears I've used, but I got a better fit than the first time I tried them.  They are intended to block the ear opening, rather than sit deep in the ear canal, which is what I kept trying to do at first.  In terms of comfort, I don't find these any more comfortable than other silicone type tips I've used.  Which is to say I find them all slightly uncomfortable.

Now for the sound.  I like the low end: nice and clear without being boomy.  I think bass heads would be disappointed, though.  I like things pretty bright.  The highs I'm not as sure about.  They are there, for sure, but I would like a little more presence.  I'm hoping that this will come over time.  This has been my experience with almost every headphone I've owned:  that I need to use them for a while to appreciate them.

However,  the soundstage on these is pretty amazing for an in-ear.  Stereo separation is as good as on any headphone I've owned.  What I like listening to on these most is live and acoustic music.  Reverb on these things is absolutely stunning.  But throw louder music at these and instruments lose definition a bit.  I think I expected more definition in dual driver phones that retail for $200.  Maybe I shouldn't expect more, I don't know.

What else?  I really like the flexible covering that is used on the wire for customizing the over the ear fit.  I prefer this way of wearing them and this the best design I've seen.  I like the nylon mesh used on the wire as well.  The wires are thin, but I like the feel of the material.

Conclusion?  I like these better than my other headphones:  currently JVC marshmallows (which I like) and Koss KSC-75 (which I've gotten tired of).  Do I like them $100 more (I got my Klipsch's on e-bay for $127, with shipping)?  I'm not yet sure.  I feel like I'm slowly being won over.  I listened to them walking in to work this morning and was really enjoying them.  Think I'll go back to work now.

Thanks for your review!

I thought about getting the custom-3, but so am unable to find someplace to test them.

Getting slowly won over by them might be a function of breaking them in.  I've had several sets of headphones that took some time to get to the point of liking them.

Last and probably least, money is a relative thing.  For some people $40 is too much money, to others, not so much.
