Subject: Media-managing software for iPod
Haven't been by here in a while, but after browsing through the forums it looks like I'm not the only one to suck it up and buy an iPod.
Seeing as how I got most of my knowledge about DAPs from here (and the old .com forums), I thought this would be the best place to ask.
Option #1: Are there any iTunes alternatives that can organize/sync video to the iPod or,
Option #2: Is it possible to continue using iTunes for syncing videos, while using a different program (maybe MediaMonkey) to mange my music?
Today I connected my iPod to the PC and got the error message, "such and such was not synced to the iPod because iTunes couldn't find the file". This is like the 5th time in six months that iTunes has moved and/or lost track of files. That doesn't even count the times I've had to completely reload everything into iTunes because of a b0rked update.
I need something like the old RMM software that can manage my collection of MP3s in real-time, instantly reflecting any deleted files or tag changes.
The guys on some of the iPod forums say that the syncing problems are due to keeping my library stored on an external hard drive, but I don't buy that excuse for two reasons:
1) I always make sure the external drive is connected to the PC before I open iTunes, and,
2) Every time I open iTunes I go into the Edit>Preferences>Andvanced screen and make sure that the location of my iTunes library hasn't been changed, and that the option "keep files organized" is still checked.
I never had this problem syncing my Karma and Carbon with an external drive, and the only explanation that I can come up with is that the Rio software scanned my library in real-time, instead of relying on some database like iTunes does.
The two main things that keep me tethered to iTunes is that I do use my iPod for video playback, and the smart playlists are pretty convenient (mostly for finding recently added music).
If there's still no solution out there for what I need, do you think that I would have fewer problems if I unchecked the option to let iTunes organize my files for me?
Thanks
