In any event, the thing has been flawless since that one shutdown.

Listened to the radio all day today. No problem. Astounded....

I am going to try the latest FW soon and see how that goes.

Still on 1.04. Worked brilliantly for 2 days. Turned it off yesterday with just less then 1/4 battery. Turn it on today. Batt Symbol flashes. ono... Plug it in.

Fires right up.

DAMNIT! Working fine now and I totally missed the boat on the dock!!

So Peregrine even with all of the problems that you've been documenting you'd still recommend a Vibez?

I would. I was looking to buy another when I thought mine had died.

Just to add an opinion that is slightly different, I (sort of) do not.  Frankly, it's hard to say without knowing the actual percentages (i.e. how many units have had problems and how many have not).

I had to send my original back to B&H due to some hardware issues, and then my replacement got bricked by static electricity when I went to adjust the volume in the dock one day.   Still under warranty, I sent the unit in to get replaced -- and I am still waiting (~a month so far).

The thing is, once (if?) I get my replacement, I feel that I'll have to treat the unit very tenderly.

So, I went out and bought a Sansa e280.  It's flash and takes microSD cards - so I've got it with 16GB now.  It doesn't play ogg, so I had to re-rip all my ogg to mp3.  (It doesn't play FLAC, so it's not a good replacement for Hundredth.)  I am really enjoying the freedom of a flash player, but I miss the Vibez's interface (or even the Karma's, my previous unit).  Someday, I believe, Rockbox will be available for the e280 (it's a "v2", and RB only works on the v1 firmware at the moment) and that will help.

BobisBob66: B&H says that it's in backorder 1-2 months. I hope that they can get one for you.

BTW Perergine...I bought a Vibez last night. Went with my first 'love'. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Also Target.com is listing Vibez batteries & the FM card for 50% off. I ordered one of each of these as well and if anyone else is interested: http://www.target.com/gp/search/601-2611817-0304…?field-….   I'm assuming that they're actually in stock (meaning I haven't received a 'sorry that item is out of stock' email so we'll see.

Actually, since my issue is now a warranty issue, it is handled by datastation.us -- the US arm of Trekstor (or something like that).

I wish it was B&H.  I like them and could trust that satisfaction would eventually be achieved.  I have no idea why a warranty exchange through datastation takes so long.  They must ship directly from Europe by boat and donkey.  (They were very helpful on the phone, though.)

One never knows.  I just came home from a quick get-away trip, and lo and behold -- a Fed Ex package from datastation.  I have my replacement!

Now, I'm in a quandary of sorts.  How much and in what context do I use the Vibez?  I really enjoyed the "flash" freedom (no HD to accidentally crash).  But, the Vibez interface....  I really like it (especially with the beta FW).

The other factor is the low output (even non-France).  It doesn't quite drive my car stereo like I need it too.

As far as "electro-static" issues and the dock, I'm thinking of trying to ground it somehow.  Or, if nothing else, putting some kind of a discharge touch plate near the dock for me to touch before I touch the Vibez.  Any EEs on this list have any suggestions?  :-)

I guess I'll use it until it dies...

I don't think you have to worry much for the HD to crash unless you smash your Vibez onto a hard stone surface or something. I forgot the actual number of g it supports but it was something impossible to achieve without a really abrupt stop. I regularly throw my Vibez on my bed from some metres away and nothing ever happened (or should ever possibly happen according to the HD specs).

I agree, I dropped mine from head height onto concrete last week.  It went blank but it powered on okay, did a "Checking disk..." for a couple of minutes and I haven't had any problems.

I've loaded up my replacement and it is working fine.  The wheel feels pretty good too.  However, I think I'm done with hard-drive based players....  I might sell it and the dock to my brother.  Not sure yet.  Sadly, I guess I'll be dropping out of the community.  Maybe someday there will be a flash-based unit with this interface -- and the beta-FW support from defector!  :-)

Are you sure you want to risk it?  Given your previous pining for a dock, I've thought about offering it up.  But, (a) I wasn't sure if I was going to keep the Vibez, and (b) I didn't want to be responsible for someone else frying their unit.

bobisbob66, is your wheel slightly smaller than the original, too? Would you mind posting a pic before your relinquish your Vibez and drop out of the community? (Fare thee well...)

If it's of interest to you, B&H now seems to be providing the dock as a "special order item"...I've been on the fence about purchasing one, personally. Who knows how long my Vibez is gonna last?
