Subject: Vibez will not turn on
Hi all,

New (not even a week) Vibez owner, thrilled with the sound quality and overall function, but now it won't turn on. I've read through the threads here that looked relevant, and I'm uncertain as to my best next step. All advice most welcomed. My current situation is that the player is off, and when I press the power button, the screen will flash white about six times and then the screen goes dark. Presumably the player is turning off at that point, but I am not sure

Here is what I did and what happened.

1. Last Thursday, plugged new Vibez into PC's front-panel USB port, and Windows XP seemed unable to identify the new device...the Windows sounds for new device & device-removed kept cycling.
2. As noted in the Vibez user manual, I suspected the front USB ports on my Dell were underpowered. Plugged into a USB extension that reaches to USB ports in the back of the PC. Success with Windows XP recognizing the device. After about an hour, the display showed "Charged," so I loaded some music, disconnected the Vibez and enjoyed it. (I'm wondering if this was my first mistake, that is, not letting the Vibez charge for 3 hours.)
3. Discovered this forum, saw the firmware v1.15b upgrade available...early adopters seemed to like it.
4. In preparation for the upgrade, I attempted to turn off the Vibez, and found I could not.
5. Nonetheless, I proceeded with the firmware upgrade. (My second mistake?) In the upgrade dialog, I ticked the box for a complete format and reset as recommended in the release notes. The upgrade seemed to complete successfully in that the default blue background was visible.
6. Again, the player would not respond to the power button, that is, would not turn off. So I took out the battery, counted to five, put the battery back in, and found the player would not turn back on. I pressed the reset button with the battery in, but no change.
7. After reading further in this forum, I plugged the player into a Blackberry USB wall charger.
8. After reading that some batteries haven't shown any charge even on an external USB charger, after one hour I tested the battery's voltage and found 3.98V. However, the flashing screen power-on problem persisted.
9. I'm waiting now for the remaining approx. two hours of charging on the external USB charger to complete, but I'm not particularly expectant of a new result. Hence this post.

Q. Is there some way to reset the circuitry in a Li battery? (I'm wondering if that's the problem or a contributing factor.)

I'll post whether or not my Vibez comes to life. I miss it already.

Praying for you.  In my experience, you really need to let it charge the recommended 3 hours before even trying to load music on it.  In my case, because I work in Jersey City, literally one PATH stop and a 5 minute walk away from J&R, I had no problem exchanging my original that had a similar sounding problem.

Also, the format option is only recommended when downgrading to an earlier release.  That should save you some time with the next upgrade.

Good luck, and let us know if it comes back to life.

Thanks much...I'll be in Manhattan tomorrow...got mine from J&R also.

Q. About the reset button, should the power be on or off? What usually happens when it's pressed?

Thanks, Andre

Reset does nothing when the power is off.  When it's on, the Reset button is supposed to force a power cycle.  In cases where it can't you need to remove and re-insert the battery.

Progress, I think, sort of...I finally saw the "Replace Cover" message...when I replaced the cover I saw a single simple graphic of a battery with a progress bar that was repeatedly drawn from left to right. When plugged into the USB port of a Windows XP PC (laptop or desktop), Windows cycles its sounds for new hardware / hardware removed. In Windows Device Manager, the vibez shows up in these in/out cycles as a USB Mass Storage Device with a yellow exclamation point icon indicating the hardware was not installed correctly. Also, the Vibez upgrade wizard does not detect the player even after numerous attempts to strategically press the Refresh button in the wizard. (I was hoping to be able to reflash the firmware.) While the power button will not turn the player on, it does seem to be "connected", because when the cover is off, and when Windows is not recognizing new hardware, pressing the power button once will cause Windows to notice the new hardware. Sigh.

Any recommendations?

Am I being impatient? Is the battery graphic indicating the battery is still not topped off?

One more tidbit...with the battery inserted and the cover on, when I unplug the USB cable from the player, the display of the battery graphic kind-of "melts" or "fades" away as seemingly whatever residual power is lurking in some capacitors is drained. Given the battery is inserted and given the battery shows 3.99V on my digital multimeter, I'm really scratching my head on this one.

Let that battery charge.  Once it has enough juice, it should turn itself on to the point where you see the startup screen and Windows eventually sees it.  If this never happens, your battery is most likely toast.

It works! It works! Whew!

I left the player plugged into the Blackberry USB charger overnight. The charger came with an old Blackberry 7230. Its output is +5V, 0.5A (500mA). I suggest grabbing one of these if you have friends who might be discarding them in favor of newer Blackberrys and chargers. This charger is handy, because it doesn't have its own cord. Instead it has a female USB port, so you'll need only one cable on the road for either charger or PC charging. More importantly, this thing saved my Vibez!

Interestingly, oddly to me, my Vibez's battery still indicates 3.99V. But, hey, the Vibez booted up, and Windows recognized it. I think I'll put some FLAC files on it now.

Thanks RubenNYC for your support and advice, and thanks to everyone who has posted to date. Very helpful.

Yes. An animated battery symbol means the battery is still charging, or at least the player thinks it is.

Returning to old thread, and unfortunately a recurring problem...

Hi Gunter, Hoping you or someone might be able to help with a question.

Using an older (possibly dead) battery, back cover on, when plugging the Vibez into an AC USB charger, the scrolling battery symbol appears for a couple minutes, followed by an attempt at booting that fails (logo screen displays only for few seconds), followed by a blank screen. Q. At this point, is the battery charging? or should I toss this battery into the recycling bin?

Andretm,

What you're describing is exactly what my Vibez does when I run the battery down all the way.  If that happens and I plug it into a phone charger, it shows the looping battery filling display (where the battery starts to fill but never gets more than halfway) and never does charge.  BUT, if I connect it to a USB cable, it shows the battery filling all the way up and after a few minutes it turns itself on and continues to charge.  At that point I can even pull it off the USB cable and let it finish charging on the phone charger.

As long as I haven't drained the battery all the way, I can use the phone charger.  But if I do, the USB cable is the only way to get it charging and working again.

Try hooking yours up to a USB cable and watching it for a while.
