A trip to riovolution.com today turned up one of those generic pages with a note saying, "riovolution.com expired on 07/05/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion"

Getting in touch with M. The real problem is that even if we got the domain, we wouldn't have the databases or anything, so it'd be wholly worthless. :(

Lyco, have you actually been in contact with M? I thought he/she fell off the earth a few years ago.

I think Lyco was just answering my question.

I should have conferred with the older (forum seniority, not chronological, obviously) posters here, but as is sometimes my habit, jumped into a situation first, without consulting anyone, not even Jesus. Being as no one here seems to have heard from or could contact Agent M for some several years:

I basically got in touch with Network Solutions and filed a change of Primary Contact for an Account for Riovolution.com, for which they have Agent_M still listed as the go-to.

The Primary Contact for an Account is the person who is designated by an Account Holder to have full access to, as well as the rights and responsibilities for, the products in a specific account. If the Account Holder is an organization, and the organization wants to change the listed Primary contact, the best way to make the change is by having the current Primary contact initiate the change via Account Manager.

If the current Primary Contact is unable or unwilling to make the change, an authorized agent of the Registrant Organization may initiate the change via fax.

That all involves registering, faxing an I.D. type document, etc. so I at least created an account and downloaded the form, and given that it may be totally registered to Agent M as an individual rather than an organization, there's no guarantees.
With 20-20 hindsight, I don't particularly want the responsibility of being the chief bottle-washer of the domain, as that implies, I just wanted the forum folks here to continue to have access to all those original threads & posts. Logically, it would make sense that the admins and mods here would have the responsibility and power, etc. and then if they did grant us the power, there'd be renewal fees, etc.
However, at this point, I haven't filed anything, nor will I necessarily- and if I do, there's no guarantee that N.S. would grant me the change of Primary Contact status.

I thought it would be a good idea at this point to let you all know whutup witdat so far. Feedback is welcome.
ahem. Feedback is necessary. Flames will be judged for originality, style, & creative cross-dressing.

You are somewhat wasting your time.  The domain name is not the valuable part.  The information contained in the database at the hosted site is.  You could have just waited the allotted time after expiration and picked up the domain name for a regular registration fee (since I doubt the domain valuable enough to start a bidding war).  The hosting company at the old site would have to grant access to the database to really get at the meat of things.

well, that's what I was hoping to be able to get at, rather than just the domain name. I haven't any interest in just the domain name, but for whatever reason, the old host has maintained things seemingly on autopilot up to whenever it expired. Isn't that what Agent M had the keys to?

Who's to say it wouldn't just keep running along for an annual hosting & maintenance charge(which may have been offset somewhat by site ads) ?
Either that, or better still, get direct access to the database and be able to pull it over and maybe merge with this one. Just trying things out at this point. If I'm totally ignorant of how websites are adminned and hosted, and this is an impossibility, let me know.

For the record, I downloaded ALL the firmwares and softwares I could find on the dnna/rioaudio site about a year ago. I meant to put a site up as an unofficial Rio mirror, but have been lazy. Should riov.com perhaps become the home for this effort?

From what I get from Network Solutions support- someone, anyone with a vested interest can fax a "Change of Agent" form to them with photo I.D. and the $35 annual fee and have control of the whole shooting match within 3 business days.

What that implies to me is, if it's worth it to whom it may concern, namely participants on this board, all the old posts and material can be made available to transfer to this new host's server, kept as-is, whatever.

I'd really like some feedback from the admins here on this?

That will only get you the domain name.  From the last time I recall, the website was hosted with another company.

That's not what Network Solutions is telling me. They say I, or whoever does this, get the whole ball of wax, no matter who's hosting.

then Network Solutions is lying.  As the domain is registered with NS, they can give you the domain itself.  APHOST is who actually hosts it (seems to be pair.com) and they are the ones we'd need to contact about getting the database and related information; unlikely to me, as databases "could" have sensitive information that they won't give out willy-nilly.

Hi, this is Connie at Network Solutions. I hate to see this kind of issue. Please email me the domain name, & I’ll work on getting it resolved for you. (Please link to this thread so we have context).
