Think I should reconnect for the purposes of this rebuild?
Couldn't hurt... I would think it would need the battery in place just to satisfy the charging/power circuit.  But I've never tried to operate a karma without a battery so I'm not sure.

Karma doesn't need a battery if it's docked or hooked to an AC wallwart, but it does need a working daughterboard.

Just to confirm, that adapter should work with any drive with a ZIF connector, not just Toshiba or Hitachi drives, correct?

It should, though to my knowledge it hasn't been tested on drives other than the Toshibas and Hitachis.  If you try it let us know how it turns out! :)

Almost a year later...
I got the Seagate ST730212DE but I'm not having anyluck getting it to power up or be recognized by the Karma. I'm not sure if maybe the cable's bad? Also is there a difference between ZIF 40 and CE-ATA? The Rockbox site lists the drive as having ZIF 40, "also CE-ATA". Seagates specs say it's CE-ATA.

There is a large difference between CE-ATA and the 40 pin ZIF interface.  CE-ATA is basically SATA but for consumer electronics - instead of having 40 pins it only has 10.

As for the powering up issue, are you sure you have the ZIF cable properly attached to the drive and connector?  I'm not sure if it's the same on the Seagate drives, but on the Toshibas you have flip open a small bar on the connector, insert the ZIF cable, and then close the bar.  There's probably better descriptions and pictures if you search around.

Yeah, it looks the connector's not CE-ATA. When I first was trying to connect the drive, I didn't realize that I had to flipup a bar, but after I saw that it wasn't going in I did some research and figured it out. I think I might have damaged the cable in my failed attempts, though. I think I am going to order another adapter/cable and try again.
