Subject: Samsung YP-T10
The Register has a review of the Samsung YP-T10, a look through the funcitonality and it looks awfully like a Sigmatel shipped device that offers the same functionality as the Vibez and also seems to support movie playback:

certainly it looks cheaper (8gb version, £100 for UK customers) than the Vibez and hopefully, the FM radio might actually work - compared to the Vibez that has awful reception.  has anyone got one?

The same functionality as the Vibez? I'm not seeing anything about gapless playback, FLAC support, auto-DJ, or advanced on-the-fly playlisting features...all much-loved signatures of an optimized Sigmatel player (aka Rio Karma or Trekstor Vibez). For my part, a lack of gaplessness and limited OTG functionality puts any player in a different category altogether, but I know we all have different wants...

Also it's only either 2 or 4 gigs. And ugly? Come on now, at least give us something to sink our teeth into :-p

Edit: Their main point is that it's better than an iPod, and we all know that isn't hard to beat.

I wonder if the yp-t10 has gapless, Rio-DJ and so on?  the article didn't say; maybe the functionality is there but not implemented?

I've had karma's and now a Vibez - I was hoping that they would put a DVB chip in the little slot so that one could watch digital TV broadcasts and Digital radio but it looks like there aren't any more add ons for the Vibez being developed.

the more players that come out using the sigmatel reference design and software - the better!

Interesting design and menu layout.  Still not giving up my vibez. ;)

Fair enough. I should have said "all much-loved signatures of an optimized Sigmatel or Rio player (aka Trekstor Vibez and Rio Karma)"... <_<

It might use a Sigmatel chip -- I don't know either way -- but I don't think it's based on the Sigmatel reference software, either the Cambridge (Vibez) or Austin one. Notice that it won't actually play WMV natively -- the PC-side application transcodes it to a proprietary SVI format for transfer to the device. Of course, there's no reason Samsung couldn't have independently implemented gapless playback. It's not actually rocket science.

The list of localised languages is impressive, though. Pan-European, Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, even Farsi -- the fonts must be gigantic.

very true, however, they gave it a go with the yp-z5, but failed...badly...

Not sure why Samsung would use a Sigmatel chip.  Samsung provides the SoC for all the new iPods, so why wouldn't they simply use their own chip for their own player?
