So you're mad because they accidentally gave you an old instruction booklet?
It does say on Sandisk's web site under MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS that you need Windows Media Player 10 to use the device, which tells me that you HAVE to use MTP. I might have missed something somewhere else, though.
I can understand you're frustrated, but calling this "false advertising" (which you did on another forum) is pretty harsh and fairly defamatory. I'm not really seeing where you have shown that this feature was "advertised" before you actually bought the device, opened the box, and read the manual. What you're really doing is taking your nerd rage out on the manufacturer because of a mistake on their part. At least you didn't drop the "bait and switch" bomb. People who try that are truly ignorant.
It sounds like a packaging error in essence. Bummer. What do you want them to do about it? Redevelop the device so you can install a third-party, open, completely free software that frankly embarrasses the hell out of the shipping firmware? Why would they be interested in investing time and money into doing that when they can sell you new stuff to replace what you have? Believe it or not, "features" provide an upgrade path for manufacturers who, get this, are trying to make money. Lots of money.
It fucking sucks, but that's the way it is. Vote with your wallet instead of whining to the internet about it.
If it's any consolation, you're a lot less grumpy than most keyboard crusaders out there.

It's what they live for. No one who wants that is to be trusted. Why can't you
all see that?" -Warren Ellis, Transmetropolitan #16
