But Sansa seems to have not learned how to treat their customer base, as far as updating information, and removing pretty critical features without any external marking on their retail box. Very poorly done.

Sandisk does appear to have some quality control issues.  There are, supposedly, boxes that say "Audible support" that are the v2 hardware, but it doesn't always seem to be happening.  There have also been reports of getting an e200r in a standard Sansa box and vice versa.  Luckily, AMS, the company that makes the chipset on the new v2 Sansa, has given some documentation to the Rockbox devs.

Saw that, which is good news.
I seriously think that the e200s w/ Rockbox blow ipods out of the water, feature & pricepoint wise. No hard drive to break, replaceable battery, etc...Wonder why Sansa doesn't capitalize on it better?

With all of the help that they're giving to Sandisk, I'd love to see Sandisk turn around and support Rockbox, but I know that since that could lead to troubleshooting hell for their warranty department it'll never happen.

I really think Sansa shot themselves in the foot on this one. As far as I can tell, Rockbox won't harm anything on the stock device & can be easily removed when needed.
Sansa has every right to change the design, features, etc as it sees fit - but the way they did this was really lame, and I believe will cost them some serious marketshare, after word of mouth gets out .
Here's hoping at least the Rockbox devs can get a v2 port running.

You could say that about Archos, iRiver, Cowon, Apple, and Toshiba, too.

Statements like this bug me, and it happens all the time.  Every time someone says "why didn't they develop X with Y in mind?", it just confirms to me that the general public has no idea how hardware/software development works, how marketing works, or how market forces work in general.

Sounds to me like you don't understand what I said

When I buy a product based on *advertised* features, openly promoted by the mfgr., only to find that said purchased product DOESN'T do what I was told it would, I have a problem with that.

When the product inside the retail package has been CHANGED, but the outside of the box (& in this case, even the supplied manual) doesn't advise of these changes, I have a problem with that.

When I read the correspondence sent between an end user & the mfgr, regarding questions about the feature changes , and are told basically "yep, we no longer offer that feature on your player you purchased from us, & have a nice day", I have a problem with that.

I work in the Pro Audio market , and am fully aware of how development and marketing a product works. And I am saying that Sansa did a remarkably crappy job of it. And if you think that the above is perfectly acceptable to consumers, then yes,we most definitely think differently.

And just to clarify, the above was written without any regard to whether Rockbox works w/ V2 version or not.
While it *WAS* one of the main reason I bought a Sansa versus another brand, Sansa is under no obligation to maintain any functionality with any 3rd party software. But they *do* need to be honest & forthright in regards to what their products offer.

So you're mad because they accidentally gave you an old instruction booklet?

It does say on Sandisk's web site under MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS that you need Windows Media Player 10 to use the device, which tells me that you HAVE to use MTP.  I might have missed something somewhere else, though.

I can understand you're frustrated, but calling this "false advertising" (which you did on another forum) is pretty harsh and fairly defamatory.  I'm not really seeing where you have shown that this feature was "advertised" before you actually bought the device, opened the box, and read the manual.  What you're really doing is taking your nerd rage out on the manufacturer because of a mistake on their part.  At least you didn't drop the "bait and switch" bomb.  People who  try that are truly ignorant.

It sounds like a packaging error in essence.  Bummer.  What do you want them to do about it?  Redevelop the device so you can install a third-party, open, completely free software that frankly embarrasses the hell out of the shipping firmware?  Why would they be interested in investing time and money into doing that when they can sell you new stuff to replace what you have?  Believe it or not, "features" provide an upgrade path for manufacturers who, get this, are trying to make money.  Lots of money.

It fucking sucks, but that's the way it is.  Vote with your wallet instead of whining to the internet about it.

If it's any consolation, you're a lot less grumpy than most keyboard crusaders out there.

"Vote with your wallet instead of whining to the internet about it."

And that's exactly what I did. I do not believe the minimum system requirements read like that only a few weeks ago, and while it may indicate to *you* that you HAVE to use MTP, it didn't to quite a few people besides just me. Besides, my rump is still sore from when I fell off the turnip truck. :-/

And I guess you're a selective reader, as you seem to have missed my post right before yours in regards to 3rd party software. Oh, well..

Regardless, problem is solved - I took my V2 back & bought a used V1 on fleabay, and am enjoying it.

Technically, they might get away with it by stating you got an equal *or better* product, since the v2 has Audible support.

Also, there IS an MSC mode for the V2s, it just requires a little extra work to get into.

agreed.
And I'm still confused as why they simply  don't mention that MSC option is still available, just that it is now accessed differently. I mean, its a GOOD feature to have - why not promote it instead of hide it? <shrug>
Sandisk's main product line is portable storage , after all.

Keep in mind the brain-dead firmware also sets the Hidden attribute for the MUSIC directory on the Sansa, despite the fact that the OF will still find music in other folders.  There's really no reason to set it as Hidden other than being completely stupid.

Is the product Microsoft Plays-For-Sure certified?
