Subject: Sansa e200 series + Rockbox+ 8GB SDHC card = Finding life after Karma?
I wooted on a refurbed 2GB model last week for cheap, hoping to add some memory & Rockboxing it. Also saw that Costco has the e280 (8GB) model on sale on Black Friday for $90 w/ coupon. Haven't gotten my wooted one yet, but was wondering if anyone has one & can provide opinions, specifically on audio quality. Seems like if they sounded good, an e280 + 8GB card + rockbox = 16GB multi-format music player w/ user replaceable battery for under $200
I still own 2 working Karmas, but am thinking of the future, & the nice idea of no moving parts & it being a current product, at least for the moment.

I really like Rockbox on the Sansa.  Note that the original firmware (which, for now, you still need for USB transfer and charging) does NOT support SDHC while Rockbox does, so you'll need a card reader.

So you need to load music onto the outboard card offline from the player via a reader? Wasn't sure how that was gonna work exactly...but makes sense.

You can load music to a regular microSD card without an extra reader, since the OF supports that.  The OF does not support microSDHC, so you need an external reader until USB is finished for iPods/Sansas/H10s.

Just to clarify how I can use Rockbox & the microSDHC, I can only load on, say FLAC files to the Sansa via the reader, and then ONLY to the external card not onto the Sansa onboard storage itself? If that's the case, it pretty much limits the usefulness if going this route...damn...although I guess it could be used "half & half " style, w/ mp3 residing on the internal memory & flacs on the outboard card.

ah well...no joy in Mudville. Went to Costco today & bought my e280 player, intent on Rockboxing it, only to find out it is the new "V2" version, that no longer has an USB mode under Settings, so you can't load it , at least there is no port for this version player yet.

Can you force it to MSC mode from the computer side?  (See vibez FAQ).

Haven't checked yet, but according to rockbox forums, there isn't a V2 port , since not enough ppl have the newer ones yet to tear apart & have a look. Gonna dump it back at Costco & find a v1 on fleabay.
Sure glad I didn't unload my two Karmas...

Good point.  Probably not something you want to take a chance on.

Kinda ticks me off, no word about this change from Sandisk, & manual w/ player still shows MSC mode as an option

See, I didn't even know the e200v2 was out in the wild, I only knew of the c200v2 for sure.  When you're searching around, the telltale is Audible support: if the player supports Audible, it's a v2, and NOT the one you want.

The box mine came in makes no mention of Audible. The player has "v2" written next to the model number on the back of the player, lower right hand corner

Won a used v1 e280 on ebay, & got it on Friday. During the week been perusing posts over at the Sansa forum & anythingbutipod, & seems there's quite a few irate customers who did as I did & bought one at Costco, only to discover they've done away with being able to switch into MSC (USB) mode, plus the v2 chipset is different than the older one, hence needing a whole new port of Rockbox, which is not available . Emails to Sansa tech support basically came back with , "too bad, have a nice day."
My v1 is really nice (8GBs on board with another 8 coming once I get an 8GB SDHC micro card), and Rockboxing nicely. But Sansa seems to have not learned how to treat their customer base, as far as updating information, and removing pretty critical features without any external marking on their retail box. Very poorly done.
