I agree with you MacDancer. I currently use my Blackjack for contacts/calendar/tasks/phone and my iPod just for media. I'm kind of getting tired of having to carry both though.

It won't matter though once Apple:

a) puts a fucking HARD DRIVE in the iPhone (version 2?)

b) flash memory becomes cheap enough where I can get an 80 GB or so flash-based iPhone for a reasonable price.

I'm gonna go with the cheaper, more functional, easier to use option.

I've seen and used more BB's then 90% of people. I currently use a Q and support Treo's.
Y'all kow I don't like iPods. But. None, and I mean N-O-N-E of the aforementioned phones are 'easier to use' for web browsing, then the iPhone is. Fact. Tactile keyboard or not.
;) That's the only thing that makes me want one. 20 Gig hard drive and NO ITUNES and I might get one.

But as I always say, I am hoping this makes Samsung, LG, Motorola, et. al. come out with comparable phones. Although, bit disappointed in Motorola lately. You latest phone is.... the RAZR V.2? Showing real imagination there, guys. ;)

I finally snapped at my friend with her iPhone. Any time you or I would use the term 'phone' we would say 'phone'.
You know, like, "I left my phone in the car".... She always says "I left my iphone in the car". I snapped at her (teasingly). "It's a Phone, Patty! Just call it a phone, damnit! We all know you have an iPhone. OK? Do I say "I left my Q in the car"... ok I have, but rarely... CALL IT A PHONE!"

hehehehe

Subject: Nokia Devices?
This post was written by a longtime fan of Nokia and may contain some bias. Care should be used to distinguish information presented as fact from that presented as the opinions of the author.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned Nokia yet. I know that their market penetration isn't great in the US, but they're ubiquitous in almost all of Europe.

The N-Series browser that started on the N80 and was implemented in the N95 is great. It's reviewed as being incrediby easy to use, powerful, and flexible, and looks great on the large screens of the N-Series devices. Plus, it uses tactile feedback, which many people appreciate. I'm not sure if I'd declare it the outright winner, but it's definately a person-to-person choice as to which is preferable (probably dividing geeks from black-turtleneck-wearers, at a guess). Further, I'd definately say that the browser on Nokia's internet tablets in the N-Series beats the iPhone browser, multitouch or no multitouch [my biased opinion].

I'm frequently surprised that Jobs and Apple are given the credit for this magic mobile device convergence trend. Nokia's been doing it for yonks, and is quite good at it, with a whole variety of powerful devices for a range of users and applications. My personal opinion has the beautiful N95 8GB edition* leaving the iPhone in the dust when it comes to a convergent mobile device. It's just a pity that US providers aren't likely to pick it up, even if Nokia gets it FCC certified. European carriers are manifold and in constant competition, so they have an incentive to offer consumers the best hardware, even if it might cut their margins somewhat. The US provider oligopoly almost precludes most open and flexible devices from being heavily subsidised or even offered at all. And that's a pity, really.

Yes, exactly, you have me down to a tee. I can only hope that my prose, descriptions or comparisons of technology can ever aspire to that level.

So, no one noticed the price drop on the iPhone?

Announced today:

The new iPod Touch comes with 32 GB of memory and retails for $499. The older 16 GB and 8 GB versions of the combination multimedia player wireless Internet gadget cost $399 and $299, respectively.

New phone too. 16G.

The latest iPhone features 16 gigabytes of memory and retails for $499. The previously released 8 GB version of the hybrid cell phone, multimedia player and wireless Internet device costs $399.

It annoys me that they have a 32G player, but only 16G phone. Could you make it anymore obvious that you are intentionally limiting the size of the Phone???

You might consider that, due to the physical construction of the iPhone, there is only room for one memory chip inside of it. There is room for two in the Touch. The iPhone has one 16GB chip; the Touch has two. I'll be picking one up in late summer, if the prices drop.

Yea but the iPhone is significantly thicker than the iPod Touch so you think they could fit two chips inside the iPhone too. I dunno, I just think the price of a 32 GB iPhone would be too intimidating for now, so Apple is withholding it.

Which is kind of the one good thing about Apple. They don't outdate their shit every 3 months. Y'know?
Spend $2,000 on a laptop and a year later it's still $1,500.

Yeah. That added thickness amounts to 3.6mm, which, while a significant percentage of the thickness of the Touch, is not significant in any absolute sense. Furthermore, you might think that they would use that extra 3.6mm for oh, I dunno, phone hardware. Maybe I'm crazy though.

(Don't mind me. I'm tired and cranky.)

You guys have made a bunch of good points in this thread...  the only question I have is:  Have you looked at the MSRP on all the phones you're saying are as good/better than the iphone??

I mention this, because the list price on the Samsung phone t-mobile gave free me 4 years ago was [on Samsung site], like $500.  Of course, you could find them cheaper other places too and that was w/every accessory (which I was not given 90% of) --but my point is that MSRP on newer phones is always ridiculous.  Apple just has the demand/supply at a point they can actually get away with charging MSRP, or better just about everywhere.

My cheap-itude normally would keep me out of this thread, but I did want to make the above point.  As long as I have my working Karma (I also have one w/HD failure, for parts), I'm good.  I can't wait for SD prices to come down more & give me more jiggle-proof storage.

The "new gadget" factor isn't going to grab me, until/unless things get much cheaper and smaller.  I could not care less about color graphics [color blind], watching video, or a slick interface at a high premium.

I also no longer use cellular, it was too expensive & the coverage areas were inadequate, for me.  There are times it was invaluable, but it was also an unwanted tether to work... "It's the second day of his vacation, but let's call him anyway --because we can..."   (I do have a secret, re-activatible pre-paid, for trips.)

Agreed.

My Motorola Q does everything the iPhone does. Everything and more. 100% seamless integration with Exchange/Outlook. I spent 2 weeks trying to get an employees iPhone to work with my Exchange server. Gave up in frustration. Q retail was $99 with a contract and I got mine free. Exchange setup? 5 minutes.
Not to mention Bluetooth compatible GPS integration.
$199 for my Trekstor Vibez. (+12$ for FM radio)
2 devices? No big deal to me when they are as slim (Q) and small (Vibez) as my 2.

But Apple has raised the bar for other phones and the newer phones coming out now are pretty sweet.
