It is that simple.   Remove the battery daughterboard from the mainboard, desolder, resolder, reattach daughterboard, done.

Congrats on your new karma!  I haven't touched the ipod (which I bought to replace the karma before I found this thread) since my conversion.

nope.  running about 22gb right now.  i have much more than 20gb of music, but 20gb is more than enough to have a good selection.

Subject: IDE to CF adapter
Hello friends,

I'm new here, but I'm not new with Karmas :) I have two of them right now; on both are the HDDs to repair / replace / destroy...

I have found on ebay this http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-IDE-CF-Compact-Flash-karte-Adapte… adapter and will test a 32 GB CF Card with it.

I will report, if it works :)

I want to ressurect my Karma. It has been lying around dead for almost 2 years.
I have a question about the CF-Adapters used.... some of the links posted in this topic are of CF to IDE 2.5 adaptors.
Is there a difference  between the 1.8 and the 2.5 connector or can I use any CF-IDE adaptor in my Karma?

Thanks to everyone that's contributed to this thread.

Resurrected my dead Karma and put in a 32Gb card. Now have loads of space for all my music and am getting record battery life - well over 15 hours!

Cheers.

Picked up an eBay 2200mAh battery ($15):

And an eBay CF adapter ($7), modded it a little:

Slapped in a RiData 32GB CF card ($150), loaded firmware and formated:

[Image: http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/2057/32gbrio04xg1.th.jpg]

To hold down the lcd screen bracket I broke off the two corners of the old hard drive and used them as nuts for the screws:

[Image: http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/2857/32gbrio02us7.th.jpg]

The CF card was actually thinner than the old hard drive, so I had to slip in a few layers of thin cardboard to keep the battery from flopping around. End result is a 32GB Rio Karma for less than a Zen. I loaded 2052 tracks/12.8GB of music in 58min, which I think works out to ~3.7MB/s transfer.

Info for anyone else in the UK, 7DayShop are now selling a 32GB CF Card for £71

I have one on order, and will report when I have tried it.

Quick update - CF Card arrived this morning, was installed in about 10 minutes over lunch using the LinITX 1.8" CF adapter, and is happily uploading all my music right now.

Rather than breaking chunks off the old disk to use as nuts, I had machined some brass pillars that I glued to the CF adapter. For info, the thread is a standard M2.5

The only point to note is that when I first fired it up after reflashing/formatting, I went straight to the About Karma menu item to check that the space was reported as 30+GB and it appeared to hang, so I reset it after 15 seconds or so. I suspect it was just initialising the database and more patience would have allowed it to work.

Once I put in in the dock and fired up RMM, it behaved entirely as normal, reporting 29.8GB (or so) free.

One more post in reply to myself  .

After a week or so with the CF Karma, I can say that it is generally great!

The only thing I miss is the gentle vibration from the HD as it spins up and does stuff as you work through the menu, or it changes songs. I didn't know that I relied on that feeling to know it was doing stuff so much, but it appears that I did. I am sure that I will get used to it though.

Of course, then I will use my wife's Karma and wonder what all the vibration is...

Mocelet what are the machined nuts you speak of? What are they needed for? I'm in the UK so pretty much i can used the same components as you did!

In my excitement to put it all together I forgot to take any pictures! I will try to explain...

I had to drill out the holes in the CF adapter card to 3.5mm.

Luckily I have access to a lathe and stock metal at work, so I made three little top-hat shaped nuts. The new nuts were turned from brass like this (dimensions in mm):
|<-- 5 -->|

+---+ +---+    -  -
|   | |   |    |  3
+-+ | | +-+    5  -
  | | | |      |
  +-+ +-+      _

  |<3.5>|
With an M2.5 x 0.45 thread tapped through the middle.

The original plan was to put the on the back of the CF card adapter, but it wouldn't work. However, I found that putting them so that the fat side was between the CF card adapter and the main karma PCB was just the right spacing, so a little araldite fixed them in that position.

Because you only need three, take special care to note which corner doesn't need one - it is the one nearest the scroll wheel.

If you don't have access to a lathe, then you will need some M2.5 nuts (from RS if nowhere else, try part numbers 528-132, 248-4567, or 483-0322) and some spacers, which can be made from tube (3mm long, under 5mm wide, and with a hole at least 2.5mm wide in the middle), and you won't need to drill out the holes in the CF card adapter.

Well after almost three years the drive in my Rio has given up. I was hoping the 64GB compact flash would make its debut before this happened but I don't seem to be able to find one. New Egg is offering a 32GB CF drive for just under $90. I've read though the entire thread but is there anything else that I should be aware of before or during the drive conversion? Thanks.

That adapter is meant to replace 2.5" laptop drives, not the Karma's 1.8" drive.  It's too large to fit in the Karma's case.

I'm confused. Several people here have been able to use 2.5" adapters, but you say it won't fit.

Since the 2.5" ones cost $3 on ebay and the 1.8" one costs $25 + shipping, I am wondering which is actually the case.

Thanks,

Thasp

The 2.5" adapters are probably the size of a 2.5" drive (so that the screw holes are in the right place). They may fit if you cut them down (and at $3 it might be worth a try), but the adapter I used (from LinITX, see my post up a few for a link) was ~£12, so about $25, and is definitely a 1.8" one, with all the mounting holes in exactly the right place.
