Subject: Recommend me an FM Transmitter
The day I come home for Easter break, my tape deck in my car stops working. For most, this wouldn't be a big problem, but for me it's a killer. My CD changer in the trunk broke a few summers ago (no biggie since I never used it)  and with the loss of my tape deck, I had no way to listen to my Karma. I have searched the internet for any information about my car (1995 Lexus ES300), but as the interbutt as we know it was in its infancy at that point and there isn't anything out there - as an expert googler, this is somewhat disheartening. So after going to Best Buy and Circuit City, both of which are offering "free" installation on stereos this week, I have realized that even with the $50 of free labor offered, I'd still end up paying approximately $260 after all was said and done.

Earlier today my mom went out and picked me up an FM Transmitter (after she, my dad, and I had just had an argument about how $25 won't buy you a decent FM Transmitter). The sad part is that it's a Monster RadioPlay 300 transmitter that she paid $65 for and clips highs like a motherfucker and sounds as flat as a 10 year old. Now, I know that you won't get the worlds best fidelity from an FM Transmitter, and that this will work for the time being, but I have about 30 days to either find something better and return this one or suck it up and deal with it.

The biggest problem in this quest is that I'm probably going to be selling this car within the next year or so, so my dad has (smartly) stated that I can't do anything to the car, such as putting a new stereo in it, or anything too crazy like that. My challenge to you guys is to recommend me something that I can purchase for about $70 and not have to have a hollow sound in my ears when I drive around.

There is one hardware thing I could do, however, and that is to retrofit an RCA cable into the CD Changer in the back. Here are the pictures of the cables attached to it. The larger left clip is the power to the changer, and we believe the smaller right clip is the audio.

Thanks guys! I know you won't let me down.

Here's what you do: splice in some line-level (RCA) cables into those and see if it works.  Actually, before you do that hit 'em with a multimeter and make sure there isn't any voltage going through them.  That would fry your DAP right quick if those were actually power connectors or something.

I know you're looking for the cheap fix, but up buck and be a man; spend $150 on a deck that has either mini-in in front or aux ins in back, and install it yourself.

They're all like that. Lashing something up with your CD changer sounds like the best bet.

The way these things work is, the head-unit manufacturer wants you to buy their CD changer, not a generic one. So the head-unit will refuse to enable the line input, unless it detects the presence of the correct CD changer (using some of the other connections). If your CD changer is electrically intact and only mechanically broken, this should mean that you could lash up the line-level connection and your head-unit will be happy. Perhaps you could post over at the Empeg BBS (in the ICE section), where there are plenty of people (not me) who know all about car audio setups.

Try this page:

http://www.installer.com/aux/

They don't have a (useful) Lexus section but I bet some of the Toyota ones would work, you should check the pinouts though. Also look on here (http://www.installer.com/adapt.html) for a Toyota -> Pioneer adapter, then add a Pioneer -> RCA. They also have a page for your specific car but there's not a lot on it (http://www.installer.com/cars/by_car.php?carid=3259).

Thanks for the lead, radish. I had been using a cassette adapter with my Karma and hadn't given it much thought. It was always annoying when the auto-fast-forward :#: would kick in during quiet parts and song transitions, but the sound wasn't too bad.

Anyway, I clicked on your link and eventually found an adapter that would work with my '98 VW Jetta. $60 and I'm no longer stressed-out every time the auto-fast-forward kicks in. Oh, and the sound is amazing. :-D

Here's the adapter I bought.
