My feeling on the whole thing having worked in the industry for over 7 years...

If you're going to swipe the music for free, at least go to their show or buy their T-shirt or something that will directly impact the artist in the wallet.

Then there are the times when the music is just unavailable to purchase, in that case full steam ahead.

I have no ethical quandaries with sampling music to determine if it's something worth purchasing. I've come to learn that it takes time to determine if you truly like music. There are so many countless albums that at first pass I didn't like it, however after several spins certain songs start to stand out and then I realize how much I do appreciate the whole work. That's why I love the subscription music plans. I'm able to sample so much music and if I love it I can then purchase the CD (I would never purchase a DRM'd low quality pile o' crap though and advocate that people boycott purchasing DRM'd music).

I used to feel that I could just go to the show and buy merch, but the label supplies the cash to get the tour off the ground and to help make merch to sell.  They have their hands in all the coffers.

When Nine Inch Nails comes to town, I think I'll just break into Trent's bus and leave him a 20.

Newest form of RIAA ass-hattery - sending cease and desist letters to web sites hosting music INTENTIONALLY LEAKED:

According to Billboard.com, the RIAA sent cease-and-desist emails to web sites that posted the tracks, leading one industry source to say, "These f***ing idiots are going after a campaign that the label signed off on."
