Thanks, MacD.
My musical tastes vary WIDELY...
I like Opeth, Miles Davis, Alice In Chains, Concrete Blonde, The Hold Steady, Gratitude, Sinatra/Martin, Bizkit and Linkin Park.... and many many more of many genres. The only thing I REALLY don't get into is Country, and Rap.
I didn't mean to imply metal was dead or not worth listening to. Opeth rocks my boxors. I just mean that old traditional 80's metal is unlistenable to me now. At least the "hits". The stuff the never got played on radio I can probably still listen to. But... give me some names to look for. ;)

My buddy is stuck in the 80's and really needs to listen to some newer stuff.

Another good female blues artist is Rory Block.  I saw her recently and was very pleased, as usual.

Opeth are more the sort of thing I was thinking of, though I am personally not a fan. As in, Blackwater Park is OK if you've got a book to read at the same time or something, maybe some su doku... but I tend to prefer something a little more... interesting. FYI, Bizkit and Linkin Park are not metal, nor are they even music. As for recommendations...

Tristania, Draconian, Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, The Kovenant, Machinae Supremacy, Nightwish, Theatre of Tragedy, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Iced Earth, Leaves' Eyes, The Vision Bleak, Rhapsody of Fire, Finntroll, Haggard, to name just a few. Those are all fairly different, and all quite good. Given your taste for Opeth, you might be most interested in Eternal Tears of Sorrow, I'm thinking. I'd suggest their Sinner's Serenade.

Thanks Mac.

(I wasn't saying they were metal, just bands that I like)

I just saw this thread, but I think the blues are still alive. There is are alot of blues/jazz clubs in the city i live in. I think the blues still live, its just harder to find them among todays youth.

I love the blues, I have in my CD collection Luther Allison, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells and many other.  I mean, if you want some more rockin' stuff along the lines of KWS or SRV, I'd suggest some Guitar Shorty or Michael Hill.  But that's just my two cents.

The Blues are a great musical genre, though not my taste.  I, personally, listen to metal and some emo stuff, but I do like to listen to the blues.  I doubt they are dead, and they are dying only in the places that they were not fairly popular to begin with.
You two look like a couple of Brokeback Mountain stuntboys!

I love the blues. While I agree with Flatty that most blues artists follow the same formula, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Love the typical artists and some of the more rock & roll blues guys:
SRV
KWS
George Thorogood
B.B. King
Johnny Winter
Buddy Guy
Johnnie Johnson
T-Bone Walker
Robert Cray
Popa Chubby
Albert Collins
Albert King
Pat Travers
John Lee Hooker
Gary Moore
Muddy Waters
Hound Dog Taylor
Blues Brothers
Lightnin' Hopkins

There are others but those were the ones that came to mind. But yeah, lately there really hasn't been anything to knock my socks off.

Robert Cray

I was just thinking about him while posting in this thread.  He tried to be a little less formulaic (but also too mellow, if you ask me)  Then I heard him on the radio the other day.  Imagine that!  Of course it was "Smoking Gun", his one hit.

I'm not saying its good or bad, but there is a specific formula for blues.  There is a list of acceptable chord progressions for blues songs.  If you take a look at a book on how to play the blues, it will provide said list of acceptable chord progressions in great detail and they are very specific.  (so many bars of this chord followed by 1 bar of that chord followed by etc.)  there are several dozen of those progressions that I've seen, but they are very specific.  (And no, there isn't any penalty for not following them, but still it is wierd that such specific chord progressions are suggested for a genre.)

I've never seen anything like that for any other genre of music.  I thought it was very wierd indeed.

I think Flatty is just upset that there is no creativity in Blues. Blues existed before Rock N' Roll, yet Rock N' Roll has changed for better or worse since the 50's but the Blues have pretty much stayed the same. The only change has been from acoustic to electric guitar really.

I'm not sure what you can do creatively to Blues without making it something it's not. But it does seem as though it's stagnant right now. I mean when people start to consider Esteban from the HSN a Blues guitar master...well that shows what a sorry state we are in.

Nord, you're right on.

I'm hesitant to say it, but I'd say that John Mayer is doing an interesting job of incorporating blues into mainstream pop (dare I say adult contemporary?). I really liked Continuum.
