Just as in 2005 and 2006, the organisers of the "South by South-West" music festival in Austin, Texas, have put up a torrent of MP3s from many of the bands playing the festival. So for anyone who wants an eclectic collection of over 700 songs from all over the musical and geographical worlds (albeit centred on rock and on the USA if past years are anything to go by), here it is.

Man, This used to be the underground music fest right? What happened. I mean kid koala kicks ass but it used to be unknowns mostly. Thats where kings of leon got their start...and they are bit now. Just I dunno where i'm going with this. cool.

It's more like just a place to play music.  It's easier for underground artists to get exposure there because of the crowd, so that's where the emphasis on the underground comes from.  CMJ in New York is similar.  It's just another event for record labels to hock records.

Oh ok. I guess I've really only ever focused on the unknowns when ever SxSW comes around

Thanks Peter, I might have forgot to grab this year's if you hadn't posted this. I continually play the previous releases on shuffle and find new stuff I like.

For those that don't bittorrent (like myself).

I just noticed a "SXSW2007" station on Slacker.

Listening to my first song (Mute Math - Typical).  I like it.

EDIT:  OK, its just a mix of current/former SXSW artists.  I still like it, but its not new music, per se.

http://hewgill.com/sxsw/ -- yes, that's not the official SXSW site, but it still seems to be kosher. I guess Mr Hewgill is just agglomerating the various individual MP3s you could otherwise laboriously download from 2008.sxsw.com.

This is a great way to find new talent, and it's not any one style of music either. Definitely worth downloading the 3.5 gigs.

It's that time again.
Best thing to come from Austin.
Now five gigs of it!
