Subject: Carbon Music Duplication error
Hello all

I just bought a used Rio Carbon on eBay just over a month ago, and for the most part it's worked just fine and I've been very please with it. One very frustrating problem with it, however, is that with some 10% or so of the albums I've loaded onto it it duplicates the album, meaning it loads each song twice, and each song repeats plays twice in a row on the album playlist. I've tried clearing these albums from the Carbon and then re-loading them, but once again the albums are duplicated, leading me to believe the problem is somehow particular to the CDs I'm loading up.

I use Windows Media Player to rip my CDs, just out of convenience. The ripped wma's on my hard drive aren't duplicated, they're only duplicated when transfered to my Carbon. Has anyone had this problem before? Any suggestions on how to fix it? I bought an mp3 player for convenience's sake, but having to hit the skip track button between each song on some of my favourite albums is rather aggravating. Any help is much appreciated!

Are you using MTP or MSC mode? It sounds like it might be some MTP insanity related to wma'a, but i'm just guessing. If you must rip into wma with wmp, at least try to transfer using MSC mode.

I... don't know! I'm not familiar with these MTP and MSC modes... Is this something you set on the Rio player or something you do when you rip the music?

If you may clear this up for me, spare no detail too small. Just assume I don't know squat about digital music players/computers/technology in general.

OK. The first thing you should to do is find out which firmware version you're using. This is because i'm not sure if switching between MTP mode and MSC mode is available in all versions of the firmware. To find the firmware version go into the main menu by pressing the side button just below the scroll wheel, then use the wheel to navigate down to the 'About' tag then push the center navigation button on the front of the player. You will see two options: 'Player' and 'Storage'. select 'Player'. The top line will read 'Version X.XX' (the x's will be some number). That number is your firmware version. The firmware version is like the operating system of your player, like Windows 95, Windows XP, Linux, etc are operating systems of your computer. Each version of firmware can have different options and features. I would suggest updating the player to version 3.04 Developer's Cut, which is the latest and has the most features. Instructions for updating the firmware is available in the manual and online.

If you are using a version of the firmware  that allows switching between MTP and MSC mode, you will find that option by navigating to 'Settings' in the main menu, then to 'Advanced' and finally to 'Transfer Mode'. You will see 'protocol XXX', with 'XXX' being either MTP, MSC, or Auto. You change the selection by using the forward and reverse (right and left) action of the main front control. I suggest selecting MSC.

By the way, MTP stands for 'Microsoft Transfer Protocol and MSC stands for 'Mass Storage Compliant'. mass storage compliant means that the device will behave as a simple external hard drive, with no restrictions on the type of files transferred between the computer and the player. Microsoft transfer protocol was designed by Microsoft for portable media players to mimic MSC mode but with several restrictions allowing arbitration of digital rights for media purchased online. One of the restrictions is that it will only work with Windows XP, another is that is will only allow certain types of files to be transferred, and another is that it has bugs that sometimes prevent is from working, either completely or just reliably. If you don't purchase music online from a source that requires MTP mode there is no advantage to using it, but there are always penalties, as I described above.

OK, I set it to MSC mode and deleted, then reloaded one of the problem albums back to my Carbon. Once again, it duplicated itself. Opening up and exploring the Carbon hard drive through Windows shows there to be only one wma of each song, but the album playlist on the Carbon includes duplicates.

Is there any way to manually create/edit a playlist in the Carbon? When I bought mine on eBay it didn't come with an instruction manual  :-/ , so I don't know everything there is to know about it. I did, however, upgrade to the newest firmware soon after I got it, so that's taken care of.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

med, Your Carbon's Hard Drive (HD) may be corrupted and you might try reformating the HD of the Carbon and then reinstalling the firmware.

To reformat:
Make sure Carbon has a full charge before beginning the process.

Put Carbon into MSC mode.
Connect to PC via USB cable.
Open "My Computer".
Right Click on drive represented by Carbon.
Tab down to "Format" and double click.
If the "File System" option gives you a choice, Choose "Fat 32"
Do not select "Quick Format".
Click "Start" and let the Format function complete.
Once formating is complete, install Firmware.  Upon completion Click "Finish"

Disconnect Rio and allow it to reboot.   Install music and see if the Carbon still duplicates.

I reformatted my Carbon and did everything you instructed and IT WORKS! No more duplicating songs! Hallelujah! Praise Rio!

Thanks a ton! I can now enjoy my Carbon frustration-free.
