Subject: Trouble with Rio Carbon  UMS vs. MTP  argghhhh!!!
Apologies for being so ignorant but I'm having trouble with my Rio Carbon.  First it was the volume wheel breaking off, i've sort of fixed it.
But now i'm dealing with My Computer, nor Rio Music Manager  not seeing my Carbon.   I've figured i screwed something up by upgrading a driver to MM 2.96, or upgrading to windows media player. I have since reinstalled the rio music manager (to 2.90) that came with the rio install cd and I've uninstalled Windows Media player completely.  But my Rio is still not recognized.  I figure it's the whole UMS vs. MTP thing that i don't really understand. I only want to just be able to see my rio, synchronize it, and listen to all my music (regardless of where i got it  ;-)
I haven't found anything anywhere to guide me. Can someone offer help in doing something to my rio, or the my computer settings to keep the mtp thing off, and let me connect and sync via UMS to my rio Music Manager.

Please.

First go into settings, advanced and change settings to MSC from Auto or Mtp, then if you dont have the latest firmware I recommend changing, upgrading to firmware 3.04.

I don't know which firmware you are using ? The last one available is 3.04 which can be downloaded from ....link here http://upload.thephlogiston.com/carbon%203.04.EXE, set the Rio Carbon into upgrader mode (back up your music first, deletes everything on the disk) and upgrade to firmware 3.04, which also has volum control on the menu and you wouldn't need the scroll wheel to adjust volume. Then go into settings - advance and change transfermode to msc from auto or mtp.

hope this helps

UV,
Thanks for your suggestions, but (big but) My settings doesn't give me an 'advanced' option, it gives me the following menu items: playback, equalizer, power, resume, display, time, language, lock setup, lock mode, and tags.  and i can't find anything that says msc or mtp.

I downloaded and tried the firmware upgrade but I can't install firmware cause the rio upgrade wizard doesn't find/recognize that my rio is plugged in (No other usbs are being used, and it's connected to the back of the pc).  so no rio in My Computer, rio mm, or upgrade wiz.

waaaaaa!!!  :'(

what else can i do.?

Sounds to me that you've got a pre-MTP version then. When you plug your device in does it appear as a drive letter? If not does it at least appear in Device Manager?

Do you have another computer you can try to install the new 3.04 firmware from?

It used to be a letter on my computer and it also used to be recognized in the rio music manager, but now it's not recognized at all.

Also, I don't have access to another computer.

I can charge it when plugged to the wall. I can listen to music that was installed a couple of months ago. but the device itself is now invisible to my computer.

If i have the rio on and plug it to the computer via usb it turns off and goes into "USB Connected  -  IDLE" .
Also, it doesn't charge from the USB only gives me the above message.

This is the only USB device on my machine - I've unplugged printers, DVD burners, everything.

This is probably a long shot, but try connecting your Carbon to the computer and then going into "Control Panel" --> "Administrative Tools" --> "Computer Management." Select the "Disk Management" option under "Storage" in the left-side drop-down list. Is the Carbon's disk by chance listed in the bottom right panel without a drive letter? If so your computer may be seeing it without having any way to make it functionally appear. Try changing the drive letter by right clicking and choosing "Change Drive Letter and Paths." I gather from the fact that your Carbon won't charge via USB that this isn't the case, but it's worth a shot. Also, just to be clear, are your other USB devices (the printers, DVD burners, etc. that you mentioned) connecting to the same USB ports without a problem?

Tried it. did the hokey pokey.  No go.     I even went to services and started all services that i could sort of recognize.  Funny thing the HID (Human interface devices) didn't want to start. i guess that's neither here nor there.

Nothing works.  can't see it (rio as drive, rio as sync device) anywhere.

My other USB devices continue to work perfectly when plugged in, i have unplugged all except the printer. .

I can see all my music (from my computer) on Windows Media player 11, i downloaded and installed again.  so maybe that wasn't the cause of this evilness.

anyone with more ideas, i really don't want to have to buy something new.  I love this little Rio, it usually kicked butt.

And "Device Manager" ?

("Windows Key" + Break -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers)

All the USBs are "working properly"
I've also tried the soft reset, connected, not connected, standing on my head. nothing works.

Is there a different way to reset without erasing the hard drive.  so that it wants to be recognized.

Also, when i opened up my rio to fix the wheel there were little pillows covered in a metal-like fabric, i still have them but maybe they need to be strategically placed?  could this be meaningful?

My rio does work on its own, it charges with the wall adapter and plays all the songs that were last on it. i just can't sync it since months ago.   arggghhh

More ideas???

Bella, those pillows are sort of "insulators".   They help prevent static electricity from transferring to important  component parts.  Static electricity can shut down the player, sometimes permanently and sometimes until the electricity dissipates (I know this from experience).  I'd recommend replacing the pillows where they were.

Others, here, are complaining about WMP 11 screwing up their Rio.  You might want to do a search and read some of those posts.   I've held off installing WMP 11 so I can't help you.
