Subject: Vibez vs. Zune or X5 - sound quality??
Has anyone had the chance to compare the Vibez to either the Zune or the Cowon X5(L)? I've read great things about the headphone out of all 3, and I'm wondering how they compare. I need to (finally) get my first DAP. (The Zune battery life may be a deal-killer but everyone seems to think the SQ is VERY good.)

I'd say the fact that the Zune is entirely crippleware would be the deal breaker for me.

If you are referring to the wifi music-sharing aspect, that doesn't bother me since I would never use it. I don't like the battery life or the proprietary software either. The only thing keeping it in the running is many reports of great sound quality, which is the main factor for me.

I agree with Kit. MS is copying Apples business model to the "t". Scary.

I like Cowon products and would certainly choose that or a Vibez over the Zune.

Of course, that has nothing to do with SQ. I believe in speaking with my dollars so even if you make the definitive best product, if there is something about it I can't stomach, I won't buy it.
I won't buy a Zune, or an iPod. Pretty much everything else is fair game.

I'm just odd that way. ;)

Yeah, I know what you are saying. I'm pretty sure I'll end up with an X5L or a Vibez. Other than sound quality, it basically comes down to capacity vs. physical size.

What don't you like about the Vibez? The reports of hissing/hard drive noise with low volume with EP630's (what I currently use) is a concern for me.

I can't comment on headphone issues. I have a $20 pair of Sony's. They work on everything.

My Vibez "con list" is very short.

I do not like the back. Scratches to easily and is a fingerprint magnet as bad as a RAZR. Fingerprints I don't care about, but it is EASY to scratch. I've given up caring about how the back looks, although oddly, people still comment that "wow, the back looks cool!".
Even more oddly is the front is the polar opposite of the back. Does NOT attract fingerprints, the screen is NOT prone to scratching.

Sometmes the menu can get a little bit laggy. Especially if there is a lot of stuff going on, like the background visualizations really moving and you are flying through the menus.

It's nearly impossible to initiate LOCK with gloves on.

Honestly, other then a few things I think can and might be fixed by a firmware update.... that's really it.
Things I'd like to see made better with a FW update:
1) The HOT BUTTON feature is cool, but you can't assign UPDATE SESSION. Only CREATE or RESTORE. I can't believe no one thought of that. Seems like the most basic idea.
2) I want one more LOCK option. LOCK VOLUME but leave PLAY/PAUSE/FWD/RWD active. Cureently when you lock you can not FWD or RWD. Only Play/Pause and/or VOL.

I am BEYOND annoyed that I have been waiting for a dock for 6 weeks now.

No, I'm referring to the fact that it isn't even compatible with Microsoft's own crippleware, Play4Sure.  If you've bought some music from Napster or whatever the kids are using these days, you've gotta rebuy for the Zune.  That's shit.  Now, the wireless sharing thing has the POTENTIAL for being really cool, but since files expire after 3 days and certain artists can't be shared, what's the point?  Not to mention the entire lack of compatibility with Linux and OSX.

OK. That's still not an issue (for me), since I haven't bought any music online yet (and would probably listen to CDs that I ripped 90% of the time), and don't use Linux or OSX.

The big cons for me are battery life and proprietary software. I've seen nothing but great reports about the sound quality, though.
