Subject: rio cali powers down when connected via USB
Help, my Rio Cali 256mb was working fine until yesterday.  Now whenever I connect the USB cable to the Cali the Cali powers down.  I've tried multiple new batteries, I've tries multiple USB ports, multiple PCs, and multiple USB cables all with the same result.  Cali powers up fine when not connected to the USB cable, but will not power up when the cable is inserted into the Cali.  Also if the Cali is on and I connect the USB, the Cali powers down.

battersbox,  Have you tried letting the Cali totally discharge?  Remove the battery and leave the Cali without a battery for a day or so?  Then try plugging it into the USB cable without the battery inserted and see if it remains in idle while connected?

I know your problem has happened with others of the Rio flash players and the Cali.  I owne the Forge and as of yet (knock on wood) haven't experienced your problem.

lelyn, thanks for the post.  I have tried discharging the Cali and have the same result.  Seems like for some reason when inserting the USB cable into the Cali it causes the Cali to power down.  As soon as I unplug the USB from the Cali I can hold down the power button on the Cali and it will power up.  Everything works normally when the USB is not connected.

I searched the old site and other sites heavily and this seems to be a problem with the Cali and I couldn't find a solution, Sorry.

I've seen bad USB ports on a laptop cause this on devices before. But this way?

I would take a total guess and say the USB port in the Chiba has shorted and is toast. I doubt that's fixable. Hate to infer bad news...
