The White Stripes - Icky Thump

http://oink.me.uk/details.php?id=1337065

I really like this album.  Not the most amazing rip, also the mastering is a bit odd...the drums are all distorted.  I'm assuming it was intentional though.  Anyway, until a FLAC version is put up, I guess I'll deal with this one.

I have to admit, the 1st 4 tunes I've listened to so far- they're very well done, very intelligent songwriting and arranging. Co-ong-quest! with the spanish horn arrangement== funny/brilliiant.

As an "oldie", I'd venture this group would've been big-time in the 70's or any era...which is refreshing whenever I or my friends complain about the current talent wasteland.
The mastering is masterful, the drums/backbeat/distortion is painful to me now, but intentional and effective.

Meh, The White Stripes. Listening to Sounds Opinions the other day, a caller's message they played summed it up perfectly. She said she wasn't able to put her finger on it earlier in their career, but this new album clarified it in her mind. She said they just sound like a ripoff of Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem. I laughed my ass off at this and realized.......she was right. Meg is no Animal, but still true.

Meh back to you with topspin. Everything is derivative, it's already been said. Even Mississippi John Hurt tips his hat to Leadbelly, "This is one o Leadbelly's song I learned off the record, which I think is a wonnerful song", then does an original take on it.
It's whether there's a refreshing enough twist to make it not opprobriously,  crushingly boringly....I don't know squat about those bands, Dr. Teeth or Electric Mayhem. I listened to a few cuts from de Stihl, track4, Apple Blossom, is noticeably Beatlesque. The progressions on A Boy's Best Friend could be Floyd or Stones-derived. Or both. Or none. Does it matter?

no.

no.

Point taken John and I totally agree about derivative/influence in music, but the reason it matters to me is that everyone and their brother fawns over TWS and how original and innovative they are....which in my book is BS. Sorry I didn't put my real reason for 'meh'. You've actually made the point for me with your examples. Thank you.

I have all their albums and I don't skip their stuff while listening to my collection on random. I just never purposely listen to them either.

Don't know who Dr.Teeth and The Electric Mayhem are? I thought only the youngsters on here wouldn't know...

Anyways, still liking:
Battles - Mirrored
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
A Band of Bees - Octopus
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Is Is (Ep)
The Aliens - Astronomy for Dogs

And if anyone needs a good comedy album, I highly recommend Robert Schimmel - Unprotected

I think this has been brought up before, but a friend lent me Muse - Black Holes and Revelations.

I can't listen to anything else. It's like a cross between Evanescence and Coldplay. But for grownups.

That, and the first track REALLY psychs me up. It's a full-on condemnation of GHWB. Like, all Biblical up in here.

Ah, so. A qualified 'meh' makes all the difference. I agree, fawning sucks. Maybe it should be a capital crime, but it's so fucking insidious I may have fawned, myself. That even sounds rude.

Well, you're way more into them. I'm pretty much old-school rock anyhow, and I have to admit, I can't listen to hardly any/all rock cd's all the way thru anymore.
But, for the curious here's a few oldies I still can tolerate- The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus- Spirit; Best of It's a Beautiful Day. Pink Floyd- Pulse. You guys will all know Floyd, but Spirit and IaBD were real pioneers.
Joe Walsh's original Ohio power trio, James Gang put on a great show too.....

I'm developing an ear for jazz, finally.
Oh, speaking of comedy- a friend of mine forced on me a boatload of cassettes, he dumpster-dived off the campus that belonged to a music professor who had died-  mostly mint condition- classical all sorts, jazz all sorts, and some really offbeat stuff, such as the Humor of Lyndon B. Johnson. [straight face] That must be a collectible.
It'll be a real pita trying to xfer any of those cassettes to digital, splitting the tracks, etc.

haha. Thanks for the H-U. I sincerely appreciate that track. It's for G-dubya, right?

Any thoughts on Absolution, Origin of Symmetry, or Showbiz?

Thanks for that list, Chet Spartan -- I'd been meaning to check out A Band of Bees (until forgetting about them completely), and I had no idea The Aliens existed. Yay new musics!

Lately, I've been rocking:

Thee More Shallows - Book of Bad Breaks, Monkey Vs. Shark, and More Deep Cuts
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther and Bamnan and Slivercork
Dr. Dog - We All Belong and Easy Beat

...and trying to get into the new Stars album, with disappointingly little success.
