been on a bit of a latina tangent recently, myself.

Buena Vista Social Club presents Ibrahim Ferrer - amazingly smouldering vocals from a septegenarian!
Gotan Project - Lunatico - remixified tango-esque fusion. Compelling.

Gotan Project rules face. We used quite a bit of their stuff during the dinner and cocktail hour of our wedding reception. Lots of people asked who it was.

Queremos Paz.

I like the original Buena Vista S.C. also. That and La Revancha del Tango = classic.

File Sharing anyone?
Here's a track from a CD I bought from a band in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They use a pan flute, which I think sounds amazing.
This can't possibly be illegal to share this track with you. This is a small time band that was playing at a restaurant where we had dinner for our anniversary. Walking from table to table playing for tips and trying to sell CD's.
The CD is not available in stores, and certainly impossible to buy in the USA. In fact, I bet they would be pleased that I am sharing this track with you. They don't even have a website. They certainly aren't RIAA members. ;)

May I present Grupo Antara from the CD Folklore Latinoamericano.

peregrine: if you rip that cd to FLAC and throw it in a .rar or .zip, I can give you FTP access to my server so everyone here can grab it.  It sounds wonderful.

I love Andean pipe music. <Soapbox>: Those are exactly the bands whose music should be purchased, imo, the ones who are (poor) working musicians and not members of the riaa bloodsuckers, etc. </Soapbox>.
If you have a webpage for Grupo Antara, please put it up. There's a site called pacoweb which has extensive discographies of South American music, but I don't know if there's any way to actually purchase thru them. http://pacoweb.net/DBstart.htm

Will do.

They don't have a web page, John. Just a hotmail email address as listed in the CD insert. Which was obviously printed on a home computer.

///edit/// Ripped. 292 MB, 13 tracks. Zipping now. I use a program called 7-Zip and it's taking 20 minutes to compress to a zip.

I also sent them an email telling them what I am doing. I offered to take donations and send them along to the band.
So if anyone wants to donate to the band, Paypal me @ tony@saabcentral.com
I swear on my mother's grave I will not steal your money and WILL get it to the band, even if, worst case scenario   (yea right), I have to go to Mexico and deliver it personally. ;)

Anyone who donates, I will scan the CD insert and email it to you.

What a great idea, huh??

par files? I'll get it to Luke and let him do whatever needs done.

I doubt they have Paypal. I'll just take donations and then cut them a check. That's pretty easy.

I should mention to NOT send any dinero until I talk to them.

Oh, so then they still owe the RIAA: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/4/24/141326/870

The RIAA is looking more and more like the Mafia. Not only is it trying to kill Internet radio, but its royalty-collecting subsidiary, SoundExchange, is now claiming the right to collect royalties for ALL artists, even those who want nothing to do with the RIAA and its jackbooted henchmen.
