dapreview, the closed ear design of the 7506s would help with the ambient noise... anyway, the overall feedback points either to my player perhaps being defective (or my hearing).  I'd like to do my own output testing, but not sure that is going to happen.
austin, how does the vibez compare volume wise to your H140 (if you still have or use one)?  My comparison to that player is what started my questioning of the vibez volume.  The H140 is distinctly louder than the vibez.

Thank you all for your input and questions.

Riolist: Ah, that'd be it. The Karma's specs were measured at 16ohms impedance.

Well, maybe I need to get my brain checked; in the course of the past few days I've been debating whether to return my vibez because of the low volume.  Before doing so, I decided to reset it once more, and do a comparison with my H140 using various headphones I own.  And... (to my dismay(this ongoing thread) and delight (sounds great and is loud enough) the volume was okay.  I could have sworn the first time I reset it I had selected not living in France, but it must have been on that setting (and I believe I selected not living in France when I first turned it on, but who knows).  I did notice one thing when the volume was low, similiar to what hiro experienced; the first part of the song would start out loud, and then the volume would damp down.  Big clue right there.

Sorry about the confusion... my bad.  In comparison with the H140, the vibez is not quite as loud, but is plenty loud for my taste (am currently listening at v-22).  Also is okay in the car, but do need to have the car stereo volume higher than I would play my H140 at.  With enough oomph, really is a great player; sounds great, multicodec, and good features for listening to music.

Thanks again for all your input and suggestions.

I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, but do you have Auto-Gain on?  I always leave it off on my Karma.

I just checked the user manual for the Vibez and found this under EQ settings:

"Amplification: under the menu item "Special" you activate/deactivate the automatic amplifier function of the vibez, which enables you to select either "Low" or "High"."

Is this the same as Auto-gain?  Try playing around with this.  Does this help at all?

Ruben, before resetting my vibez for the second time a few days ago, I had played around with the AGC setting; I could never tell any difference between the settings.  That is why I was thinking that when a song started out being loud for a second and then the volume reducing may have been the French setting (there wasn't really any distortion).  Even now, going through the different AGC settings I can't really tell the difference.

The long and short of this is that after re-setting the player (going into 'Features, 'Maintenance, 'Player defaults, which as it implies, puts the player back to its factory settings, completely erasing the harddrive and allowing you to start over with the 'French' question) for a second time, and seeming to finally answer that I don't live in France, the volume is fine.

EDIT: Nevermind, found out its just a French law to have the volume limited and doesnt seem to be a European thing (I live in the UK). Glad to hear it was all fine after you got to select something else.

Sai, my vibez is from J and R in NYC.  Apparently there is some sort of regulation in France that requires DAPs sold there to have a lower volume option (restricting output to a maximum of 105 dB).  When you first turn the vibez on, it will ask the question, "Do you live in France?", and give you a yes or no choice.  With 'no' there are not any volume restrictions.

Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it.  :-) Sounds easy enough then.  :-D

Great! This is good news as far as the volume goes, but I'm still concerned about hissing with the EP630s.

Eriks37 (and anyone else) - do you have Creative EP630/Senn CX300/Sharp MD-33 IEMs? If so, do you hear any hissing at low volumes? I've seen this mentioned a few places (including a thread on this forum). I recently got a pair of EP630s for portable use and I'd hate to have to ditch them and find something else if I got the Vibez.

tman1....I've used my Senn CX300s and my Shure E4cs with the Vibez and I do not notice a hiss.  I do notice a hiss when using them with my iRiver H340.  Hope that helps.

tman1, I don't use the headphones you mention... of the four headphones I've tried with the vibez, they all sound good, no hissing, with the Senn PX-100s seeming to sound the best.  (the others being Sony MDR-51, Plantronics 590s, and IOGear GMBHKit).

Just wanted to mention one more thing about the volume issue; I wrote Trekstor service about it, and of course they mentioned the French setting, and also said this: "In doubt please rest your vibez."  Seemed kind of weird thing for the service people to say.  Though, when debating what to with the vibez when I was having the volume issue, I did let it sit for a few days.  Anyway, glad it works, and very happy with the player.

I got a kick out of that response.  I'm opening mine up tonight to see if it has vocal chords or something.
