Subject: Vibez volume issues?
Hello, I got a Vibez (8g) for Christmas, and generally like the player a lot (when buying my first hd player, my decision came down to the Rio Karma and iriver H140; got the H140, but have always been curious about the Karma, and then recently the Vibez).  However, I find that the volume just isn't loud enough for my listening tastes (I listen to my players a lot in my vehicles).  Has anyone else found this to be so?  Is there a setting I'm missing?  Thanks for your input.

No, I went through that setting.  After starting up and using my player for a while, I wasn't sure if I had answered correctly, so reset the player back to default, and re-answered the question.

ericks47 - Have you had your hearing checked lately?........Just kidding.   What are you using for earphones?  I hada problem with the E4cs - returned them and the new replacements were louder by 3 fold.

lelyn, the hearing check is a consideration... the vibez not seeming loud enough comes from using it in the car.  When using my H140 in the car, with the H140 volume near maximum (aux connection), I usually have the car stereo volume at around half (in the truck) and 3/4 (in the car).  At those levels, the music comes through the most versus road and car noise.  With the vibez at max volume and the truck stereo at max volume, car and road noise were quite audible (I haven't tried it out in the car as yet, tomorrow).
I bought a headphone amplifier, and it definitely helped in the truck, but I thought it still was not quite there.
As for headphones, I've used PX-100 and Sony M-51s.  Still thought there was not quite enough power from the vibez, though the headphone amplifier helped there also.  Probably something I have to get used to or just stick with my H140.

I did a bit more checking into the power output of the vibez and various other players.  The vibez has an output of 7.5 mW per channel (from Trekstor's website).  The iriver H140 and Cowon x5 both have outputs of 20 mW per channel (from www.Dapreview.net's database function).  An article on Dapreview (Tweaking your iPod's Equalizer, http://www.dapreview.net/e107_plugins/content/co…?conten…) mentioned that the iPod has an output of 30 mW per channel.  So the volume issue with the vibez comes down just not as much power.  Granted, I am not sure if the number Trekstor shows is the European limited output, and even if it is, I would think that the 'overseas' output would still be less than the players mentioned above.  One feature I hadn't really considered much until I got the vibez.  (the Dapreview db lists the Rio Karma's output as 55 mW... pretty significant difference).

I thought I'd read somewhere that the Vibez put out 12 mW.  Anyway, FWIW, someone over at Head-fi posted a review of the Vibez raving about the sound quality and lack of extraneous hissing noise, particularly when he hooked it up to a headphone amp.

Sure, I still prefer the Karma's 55 mW sans amp, but when she eventually kicks the bucket, I'll strongly consider the amp/Vibez combo.

Overall, I like the player alot... I agree, the sound quality is very good, and is very good through a headphone amp.  The one I use is supposed to boost the volume by 40%, and considering what the output level is with it, I would lean towards the mW output being 7.5.  The factor I am not sure how to assess is the impedance quoted for each output.  Trekstor states the 7.5 mW output with 32 ohm impedance, while the other players I mentioned were with 16 ohm impedance.  The impedance either way is pretty low, but could make a difference.

7.5? Didn't the Karma have 55?

How is it compared to the Carbon?

The Rio Carbon produces 15 mW per channel (from Dapreview's dap.db).  mrk , I was talking about the vibez in the vibez in the post previous to yours.

I know. I'm just saying that going from 55->7.5 doesn't sound like a great idea to me.

Apparently someone measured the output of the Vibez at 28.3mW vs. Karma @ 55mW, or 0.673V vs. 0.938V

Also the Trekstor website quotes 7.5mW X 2 into 32 Ohms. I believe the above calculations were for 16 Ohms. I guess that could account for the difference. The Karma would most likely be lower than 55mW when calculated for 32 Ohms.

7.5mw doesn't seem right to me since I've been using it with Sony MDR-7506 (~60ohm) and it gets loud enough to drown out the ambient noise at a busy airport this last weekend, and it wasn't even on full blast...

compared to other players i have in the 25-30mW range, i'd estimate the Vibez puts out around 20mW with 32ohm+ cans.
