Subject: Carbon--Upgrader Infinite-Do-Loop
Hello,

I'm new to commenting on the forum, but have read a lot and like this much better than the previous Riovolution.  But here's my problem. My carbon worked well for several years, but after reading about the Designers Cut, decided to upgrade to verson 3.02.   No problem on doing the upgrade, but shortly after, the Carbon started to shutdown at random periods after startup.  But thats not the real fun part!!!  The unit would not startup normally, but would show "upgrader" every time. Usually, after much power button, side button and paper clip reset combinations, I could return the Carbon to operation-----until the next shutdown, when the fun-and-games would start all over again. :-) I tried a reformat, but all it did was wipe out all the songs, leaving 3.02 installed. The other interesting thing is that when I try to go back to the original 1.43 firmware, the install does not even "see" the Carbon.  But when I reinstall version 3.02 over the already installed 3.02, the install IDs the Carbon and does a clean install.  Any thoughts of whats going on.  With all the positive comments on 3.02, my gut feeling is that the new firmware is not the problem. Does anybody know how to completely wipe-slick the hard drive, so the op system is also wiped out.   I wonder if I could do that and then installed the op system ---1.43 or 3.02 from scratch, it might work.   But can't seem to be able to dump the ops system.  When I go into My Computer, I don't see any ops systeam in the Carbon to delete, but after I delete everything I do see, the ops system is still there.  Also, your help for me may also help Paulzy in his Carbon start-restart problem, as starting from scratch with a clean hard drive might cure his problem also.

Thanks,

PaulyEddyFreddy

Power up, Go to Menu, select settings, tab down to Advanced and select, select Transfer mode and change to MSC.

Connect via USB to Computer and reformat.  Now you should have a "slick" HD.

Install firmware of choice.  If you are installing 3.02, consider 3.04 instead and this gives you the option of changing volume if/when your scroll wheel fritzs up.

When the Carbon's battery is nearing the end of its life, the Carbon acts up.  Could be the battery.

I believe 3.04 also has a filesystem fix.

The "Prince" / "Prince & The Revolution" directory problem I seem to remember. Although I believe this problem is only seen on playback.

Out of curiousity, which problem is that?

I think it goes something like add a directory called "Prince" with music therein, then add one with "Prince & The etc"  with music therein (maybe swap those steps). Now try and play the music, you'll find one of them will crash the device.

Wow, it worked.  Did what you said and the hard drive was completly erased.  Installed 3.04 and the Do-Loop was broken.  However, like you said, the  uniit would not hold a charge, so the battery may have contributed to the problem somewhat.  But, since I was planning on using the Carbon as my AC powered office music source, the battery issue is non-problem.  I have had to format several PC hard drives over the years---Seems as long as your MP3 player boots up even a litttle, its an indication  that the hard drive is mechanically and electronically OK.  If the HD is ok, then it has to be either a software problem or  the  battery.  Both not hard to fix.  Fixing a software problem is very often  impossible  without "backing out" and starting from scratche.  But since its so much easier to do with an MP3 player than a fully loaded PC, from now on, if I ave a problem with one of my MP3 players, I plan on doing only 1 attempt to fix from the existing software, before I do  a commplete reformat. Your fix was so easy that its not worth the time to try to "fix" the problem, when reformaatting should "erase the problem" as it erases the HD.

PaulyEddyFreddy....Glad to hear you got your Carbon running.   I used to try to "fix" software/hardware problems.  Then I read an article by the original creater of "Audacity" (the open source audio recording software - info on sourceforge.net) about software and hardware advancing at such a rate that work arounds are the best we can hope for.  Now, if I can't fix something in a short period of time I don't spend days trying to figure it out - I just go for the work around.
