My Rio keeps 'Sorting' and restarting.
It fell out my backpack, and hit the locker, now it won't 'Finalize'

Subject: My Rio keeps 'Sorting' and restarting.
Rio Carbon 5GB, Firmware: The Developers Cut 3.02

I did drop it. Twice. But I have it inside a protective case made of soft rubber-like padding. It never hit the ground, just bounced off my backpack onto my shoe; and it hit the locker door. So it may be that the Rio HD is crashing.

Point is now my Rio Carbon keeps rebooting when playing any songs I add to it; well not all new tracks, it will play some. When I had it MSC mode it would hang at the 'Retrieving database' dialog box while using RMM. So I copied the files using the folder method of opening the Rio as a hard drive. Some files played, others would cause the Rio to reboot and reset.

So I switched to MTP mode, but I could only see 287 tracks as opposed to the 668 that are there. I've since removed those tracks I thought were bad so now there are about 665 or so. But when I opened up the Rio in RMM it (at fisrt) said 2, then after tranferring 7 new tracks to it - it said none. But when I opened it up in Exporer I can see all the tracks, including the new ones.

Here is my video showing everything. [2:59 - 11,120 KB (10.8MB)]

I deleted the .THCDB something file the first time and everything worked okay until I tried to copy some new tracks to the Rio. I recalling reading on the Riovolution.COM message board that deleting the .SETTINGS & .PLAYING files may help. I did, as in it was able to reach the 'Finalizing' message. But, it still hanged when playing certain tracks. So I deleted the new tracks. Some tracks would play fine, THEN tracks already on the Rio would stutter and it would reset.

The first time it unplugged it from the PC after copying and deleting tracks it got stuck on the 'Sorting' message (after three times of sorting it restarts), so I used a paper clip to reset it. It worked. So I switched from MSC (since it hanged under RMM) to MTP. The last time I used it (around Dec 27, 2006) with RMM it showed me 278 tracks, later in the week it showed only 2, then none after I copied 7 tracks via MTP mode.

Now whenever I turn it on, plug it into the wall, it starts and goes into initialize mode and stops at 'Sorting', and restarts -- and keeps restarting after trying sort three times. Restarts, sorts x 3, restarts. It'll keep doing this until I use a paper clip to reset it to turn it off. The power button does nothing while it's starting up.

Watch the video, it explains better then I can. I've had ths since Feb of last year, so I am looking at replacing it with the Cowon A2 (when I get the money). But I really like my Rio Carbon.

Here is my video showing everything. [2:59 - 11,120 KB (10.8MB)]

Any help here would be nice.

Probably a stupid question, but have you tried putting it in MSC mode and formatting it?

Have you tried what 'RioList' suggested?

At least put it in MSC mode and run a chkdsk on it. Delete that pesky '.thcdb' directory and try again (don't forget to show hidden directories to see it).

Good luck!

I can't.
It's stuck in MTP mode. I can't get past the 'Sorting' message (as seen in the video).
IS there a way to switch modes while USB'ed to the PC? I would suspect not.

Crap-in-smax! I was able to reload the files. but it stutters on playback and reboots itself, just like before. And hangs during file copies. I even hanged while doing a CHKDSK. This thing is fragged. I'm buyig the Cowon A2 whwn I get the $. Sorry, guys, but that's it for my Rio. If it manages to start working normally, I'll let you know. sisgh...

See the solution to my Infinite Do-Loop problem.  My post is just a little above yours.  Since 3.0.4 now lets you navigate in  your Carbon, do the complete erase format and THEN install 3.0.4.  The problem with doing a reformat from the default settings is that the existing software is not erased and whatever is causing your prroblem is probabaly not erased either.  Good luck.

I was ble to copy 49 files to the carbon, and then it goes into the -reboot loop- after a few seconds. Sooooooooo, I'll do the complete erase you suggested in your post. Keep you guys posted.

BTW, I really seriously going to get that COWON A2 when $$ permits -- it's just sweeeeet!  :-p  :-D

Auuhhhhhh! That's sigh of relief. Thanks, MynameEddyFreddy! Thanks a lot.
To be fair, I was considering formatting it back then but was afraid that it would mess up the Carbon.
Given the 'nature' of WinDOS XP -  :-/    - I didn't think the formatting of a portable music player under windows would be a smart move

But it worked, by-jumbinit, it worked! YYAAAYYY!!  :-D  :-D  :-D

BTW - I'm still buying the Cowon A2 ... oh,  <_<  I already said that. Ahem... ahem... move along, nothing to see here.  ;-)

5:30 am pst: the verdict is in on my carby: MIXED  :-/ . For some new music that I added (after October of 2006) is skipping and rebooting the Carbon (plus it resets to the settings, time and date). But all the other tracks play fine. So it looks like that I dropped too many times (three times) - since I can't send to Rio to be fixed, I'll just pay off my credit cards until I have enough fake money to buy the Cowon A2 PiMP. The fact that can listen to all my music added before Oct 2006 is still good. Maybe I just need to re-encode those newer files. But the fact is: they all played fine before I dropped against the locker at work. :(

the important thing is that now I can plunge myself back into my music. Before now I was reading a lot, and just staring out the train window. bbbrrrrr. Now I can escape the Bush-Iraq reality TV show once again.  :scared:
