Subject: My Rio keeps 'Sorting' and restarting.
Rio Carbon 5GB, Firmware: The Developers Cut 3.02
I did drop it. Twice. But I have it inside a protective case made of soft rubber-like padding. It never hit the ground, just bounced off my backpack onto my shoe; and it hit the locker door. So it may be that the Rio HD is crashing.
Point is now my Rio Carbon keeps rebooting when playing any songs I add to it; well not all new tracks, it will play some. When I had it MSC mode it would hang at the 'Retrieving database' dialog box while using RMM. So I copied the files using the folder method of opening the Rio as a hard drive. Some files played, others would cause the Rio to reboot and reset.
So I switched to MTP mode, but I could only see 287 tracks as opposed to the 668 that are there. I've since removed those tracks I thought were bad so now there are about 665 or so. But when I opened up the Rio in RMM it (at fisrt) said 2, then after tranferring 7 new tracks to it - it said none. But when I opened it up in Exporer I can see all the tracks, including the new ones.
Here is my video showing everything. [2:59 - 11,120 KB (10.8MB)]
I deleted the .THCDB something file the first time and everything worked okay until I tried to copy some new tracks to the Rio. I recalling reading on the Riovolution.COM message board that deleting the .SETTINGS & .PLAYING files may help. I did, as in it was able to reach the 'Finalizing' message. But, it still hanged when playing certain tracks. So I deleted the new tracks. Some tracks would play fine, THEN tracks already on the Rio would stutter and it would reset.
The first time it unplugged it from the PC after copying and deleting tracks it got stuck on the 'Sorting' message (after three times of sorting it restarts), so I used a paper clip to reset it. It worked. So I switched from MSC (since it hanged under RMM) to MTP. The last time I used it (around Dec 27, 2006) with RMM it showed me 278 tracks, later in the week it showed only 2, then none after I copied 7 tracks via MTP mode.
Now whenever I turn it on, plug it into the wall, it starts and goes into initialize mode and stops at 'Sorting', and restarts -- and keeps restarting after trying sort three times. Restarts, sorts x 3, restarts. It'll keep doing this until I use a paper clip to reset it to turn it off. The power button does nothing while it's starting up.
Watch the video, it explains better then I can. I've had ths since Feb of last year, so I am looking at replacing it with the Cowon A2 (when I get the money). But I really like my Rio Carbon.

Any help here would be nice.

- I didn't think the formatting of a portable music player under windows would be a smart move
I already said that. Ahem... ahem... move along, nothing to see here.
