Subject: Should I Use my Karma's Extended Warranty?
When I bought my Karma a year or two ago, I purchased a 3-year Mack Warranty on it.  The other day the scroll wheel finally broke, for no particular reason.

Do you think I should attempt to use my Mack extended warranty to have this repaired?  Or will they more likely replace it with a refurb?  Or would they just send me a check?

Any opinions on whether it would be a good idea to try and use this warranty, and on what action Mack would want to take, if I made such a request (My Karma still works like a charm except for the scroll wheel and the usual signs of wear)?

I don't know anything about how the Mack warranty works, but super glue did wonders for my scroll wheel, and I haven't had much luck with refurbs (tried buying one at J&R a while back and 4 out of 4 had a problem that made it unusable).

Send it in if you can bear to be without it for several weeks, don't screw with it, unless you want to void the warranty.
I had the same 3-year deal with them. First, they replaced the hard-drive, then when I sent it back saying it was still dodgy, they sent it to Rio's authorized repair place in Waco, Tx. who sent me what was either a refurb or new player. Either way, its battery life is very good, like new. I've still got 1 1/2 year left on warranty, and I hope for their sake my player stays healthy ;-) .
Mack also sent my old hard drive back at my req, which as it turned out, was good and salvageable in a different player. They surely lost $ on me already, but I'll stand up and say they treated me right.

My Karma was under a CircuitCity warranty when the wheel broke.  I knew it was just going to be a store credit, so I opted to attempt the fix myself.

If you've got a fairly steady hand, it's an extremely easy fix.  I did mine with epoxy, so that it wouldn't break again.  Superglue will probably do the job, but depending on the angles of the stress, may break again.

Check out the guides on fixing the scroll wheel, and set aside about 20 minutes (30 if you study the pictures longer than necessary, like I did) :)

Good luck

Thanks everyone for the advice.  I'm still not sure what I'll do.  Since the player still works except for the scroll wheel, perhaps I'll hold onto it for a little longer before sending it in.  (I am a bit worried about a refub with a dodgey hard drive, etc.)  If I do send it in, I'll try and post a follow-up here.

Why not get the store credit, ask what they planned to do with the broken Karma. If they said they would throw it out, ask if you could keep it and then fix it yourself. Of course if they would keep it then I would say never mind.
