JL, try holding the Menu button to cancel out.

It's true that the scroll can be replaced by a hold, but it still requires the additional action of a second click (center or right).  Two steps and a full second of time is more cumbersome than I would deem appropriate for an action as basic and common as leaving a screen.

Hmmm, are you saying you want a single click to cancel out of that screen only, or actually take you all the way back to the actual Now Playing display?

Personally, I prefer the current setup where you have to explicitly scroll to the cancel button or hold the Menu button to get back to the menu listing.  Take the custom EQ screen as an example:  Say I want to tweak the eq bands to optimize the sound, I could spend several minutes listening and tweaking.  If a single accidental click in any direction could cause me to lose my changes, I would not be a happy camper.

IMHO:  I'd leave this piece exactly the way it is.

Point well taken.  I'll admit that some of my frustration have arisen due to extra poking around in the menus during these beta releases.  Still, I've more than once misclicked my way into 'Playback Options' and had to perform frustrating manoeuvers to return.

I guess, then, that I would find the ideal solution to be: [left] to previous screen if no change have been made and [left] to go to (but not trigger) 'Save' if changes have been made.  The word processor we had on our Apple IIe in elementary school even offered something similar. :-)

I hear ya.  I can't tell you how often I wish the vibez had that extra menu button the Karma had to the left of the RioStick. Really makes a big difference.

I kind of like the feature that the rotary popup menu state gets saved so when you say changed the pitch next time it opens you change the pitch again. Saves me a lot of frustration compared to the time when the popup used to suddenly vanish and you had to tap your way all back to the right setting. Yet what annoys me now is when I changed something, leave it and then like half an hour late I want to adjust the volume... no chance I remember that I last changed the rating or something. So my rating gets messed up. Accidentally skipping halfway through some podcast is great fun, too. So some timeout would be great after which the popup menu memory is reset to "volume" (much less than half an hour would be good). Would be even greater for me if that depended on the last state (seek, rating -> reset; pitchbend -> no reset; brightness -> don't really care) but that's probably just me so never mind.

To me the rotary pop-up memory is a bit like the above situation with Cancel to exit as a safety feature v. annoyance.  Always reverting to Volume is "safe," for the podcast reason you mention, but it's annoying as you point out too.  I think a smart middle ground would be ideal.  Off the top of my head: the rotary pop-up remembers your mode for up to, say, 1 minute after you last use it.  Most likely if you're doing some major track-seeking, you won't be listing to more than a few seconds to determine if you're in the right spot, so the mode you want will still be active.  After a minute, you've probably forgotten what the last mode you used was, so the vibez should too.

Granted, the pitchbend situation isn't quite as neat as that, since you might just be pitchbending every three minutes for an hour, so I think a menu option that lets you choose "always reset" / "smart reset" (aka 1-minute memory) / "never reset" might be necessary too.  This strikes me as a little more elegant and intuitive, although your asymmetrical solution certainly has merit too.

First great thanks for the amazing firmwares! :-)

And here my 2 wishes for new features:

1.What about an "auto rating system" connected to the playing times:
   e.g 5 times played --> 1 star etc
and possible to set up (e.g. turning off - make 10 times played 1star and 15 times played 2 stars etc.)

2. And my next wish would be a sleep timer and maybe an alarm clock , if possible.

p.s Sorry for my bad English. I hope you understood everythink

Just out of curiosity: What do you use the rating for? The DJ feature already has several modes using the play counter and you can see this counter in the track info.

Speaking of the "DJ" I'm still missing some functionality: Recently I thought it would be great to have something like "Play everything rated with at least n stars but only if it has genre xy". Then I thought this gets quite complicated soon if everybody demands his or her own crude combination of criteria so why not have like some configuration files somewhere on the vibez where you can put together such rules by yourself (no need for a GUI to create or modify these files on the player itself IMHO), including the already existing ones. So you could put together the DJ modes you really use. Then again a very similar feature already exists in iTunes and is called Smart Playlists IIRC so I hope it's not patented or something (would be pathetic, I mean I could come up with this).

In DJ Mode you got the possibillity to choose the Random Mix:
"In this play mode, all music on the vibez is mixed and played for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 2 hours,
3 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours or unlimited.
" (see manual)

Maybe this is not exactly what you want: playing your own selection. But it's better than nothing :-D

Well, when you have about 1000 songs, you (at least I) want to sort "old", less-used or non-used songs out.
And after I period of time I want to delete / erase the songs with too less stars.

p.s. And to rate songs on your own is often really hard. Because you don't hear the same song everyday. Sometimes you like to hear this song and another day you can't hear this song. It depends on your mood you have on this day, doesn't it?

I thought FLAC and Vorbis were enough but now I could actually use Speex support in my Vibez. Would it be hard to implement? It's BSD-licenced open source and the ogg container is already supported by the Vibez. There's a fixed-point version but it doesn't seem to be finished. Does the Vibez have an FPU?

Subject: Crossfade vs. Crossover, Numeric Playback vs. Alpha...
Would it be difficult to Crossover tracks without fading?

Would there be a way to play all albums of an artist in order of release date - rather than alpha by song?

Subject: Feature Request:
I would love to have an option to show album art on the Full Screen display (the screen that comes up after 2 center button presses on the Now Playing screen) but keep the selected background image for all other screens. Since having album art as a permanent background image renders the Now Playing text nearly unreadable in my experience, I use one of the stock background images on my player. Having album art pop up on only the Full Screen display would allow me to retain the legibility of the other screens while having quick access to cover art when I wish to view it.

Unfortunately, it does. That's why I still vote for displaying a soft coloured (black) shadow around all letters which should pretty much solve all readability issues.

How about displaying rating stars on the screen? 'Cause i often rate my songs and forget, was current song rated or not.
For minimalists an option "Display rating on the play screen" can be added also 8)
