Current wishlist. * = comments by me.

This is an updated version of Peregrine's Whishlist summary, the "*" indicating comments by Peregrine. Comments starting with "#" are mine.

I kept Peregrine's topic numbering and just added new entries at the bottom.

  • 1. the lock function. It would be nice to be able to FFWD or RWD through songs, in addition to PLAY/PAUSE while locked. Only disable the rotary VOL. *(The #1 agreed upon wishlist item) (# Can be solved in "soft hardware" by putting the Vibez into a skin bag. ;)

  • 2. nested playlisting

  • 3. support for AAC audio

  • 4. embedded cuesheets! would make it perfect

  • 5. Pick-an-album-at-random DJ mode, or alternatively a shuffle mode that keeps album tracks together in order

  • 6. "Go to album/artist" function for when listening to random mixes. I often hear a song on random play and then want to listen to the album it is from / more from the same artist.

  • 7. What I would really like is to use the scroll wheel to navigate the current playlist when pressing the center button. For some reason, the scroll wheel controls volume in this view only. Additionally, if this view had all of the Now Playing functionality, then I would be in heaven.

  • 8. Also a Pitch function that makes only the music/text faster/slower BUT with remaining at the same tone pitch, so that when I hear an Audio Book faster than normal the voice does not sound like Mickey Mouse!

  • 9. DJ - Great feature but would like to see a filter added from which the DJ pulls rather than the entire music library.  It would be nice to be able to choose Playlist, Genre, Year, etc. then choose Entertain Me, Top Tunes, etc.

  • 10. More robust organization within Genre, Year, Mood, etc.  Currently when you choose one of these, it lists all the tracks within that Genre and lists them alphabetically.  I'd like to see them listed by Artist, Album.  The Vibez has a great navigation UI for this - why not use it?

  • 11. RDS for the radio *(many agreed with this one, too)

  • 12. The ability to create & edit playlists independent of the Now Playing list.  Karma had this, vibez does not, and I feel a tinge of sadness every time I go looking for it.

  • 13. I'd really love the Vibez to have a pan/balance control.

  • 14. Backlight on track change like music clip tv channels do, they announce the track titles etc at the end and beginning of each track

  • 15. always start playing (or always pause) on power up, not remembering play/pause setting *(not sure this is possible with SAVING SETTINGS moved to powerdown)

  • 16. Two sets of "Power Saving" settings for battery and connected mode so we can configure the backlight to stay "always on" while the Vibez is sitting in its docking station.

  • 17. Automatically turn the backlight on if remote control codes are recognized while the device is connected to a power supply, so that the backlight switches on when using the docking station's remote control.

  • 18. Paint a contrasting "shadow" or "halo" around the font's glyphs, such that the text's readability is improved, eg. if you select "album art" as the background image. (# also collected a few nods)

  • 19. A "Play 1 Track" option (a la the Rio Carbon Developer's Cut firmware) which allows us to select whether playing 1  track (A) starts from the track (and treats the full album/directory it came from as the Now Playing list), or (B) plays just that track.

  • 20. Allow to reach the editable "Now Playing" list from the Playing Screen using a single button press, eg. by making it available as a "Quick Button" option. (# Being able to skim through tracks using the wheel, as I also suggested, probably is not really important any more if the "Now Playing" list can be reached more easily.)

Maybe it'd make sense to order this list by the effort required to implement each topic? However, that's probably impossible to estimate for me.

Let me add my suggestions from the firmware thread:

21. Undo skip. Explanation: When I try to change the switch the popup menu or rewind a small amount and I'm too slow I skip to the next track or the beginning of the current track. While this is mildly annoying for music, it's a PITA for podcasts (or any spoken word content for that matter). It would be great to have a short time window in which a press on the opposite skip button would activate a kind of undo function and bring me back to where I accidentally left. Making it optional would probably becalm the lot among us users who frequently can't decide in which direction to skip.

22. I miss a DJ mode to play all tracks with at least (and not exactly) a certain number of stars.

23. There is a "delete track" quick button but I can't find a function to delete the current track from the disk anywhere in the menu. Listening to a bunch of new music and keeping only what I like is quite difficult ATM.

24. Deleting a whole directory isn't possible at the moment AFAICS.

25. Recording radio would be great (if feasible).

26. Possibility to choose a fallback background when album art is the first choice but not available.

Finally I'd like to second a wish expressed by some people in the firmware thread which is:

27. Option to set an absolute (as opposed to the current fix relative) skip amount for the seek popup menu and/or the FF/rewind buttons.

I personally like the following suggestions among 1-20 a lot: AAC, DJ filter, RDS, balance control (I'd like to add a mono function to that, for when I use only one earbud), connected mode power settings, better looking and more readable font.

Subject: Yes to the skip fix
I 3rd the skip fix. I have used my Soundforge to edit down podcasts, but really, it takes too long! The re-encoding is time-consuming for something I am gonna listen to and then delete.

Would love a few more font colors or something. I agree that some wallpapers hide the font colors too much, as there is too much variety of colors in the papers. So I will be stuck using my Rush's Fly by Night paper. poor me  lol

Thanks for the input. VERY nice people here (as compared to some forums...)

Subject: Just thought I'd say it again...
Would love to:
Delete tracks from Vibez when in now playing mode,
Play tracks in order of track number (not alpha) - make alpha default for Playlist and DJ modes.
And to take that a step further - to organize albums by date for a cronological history playback.

Lastly,
Crossfade - Would be best if crossfade would fade out but not fade in - but still cross over.

Thanks

I don't have time to do it myself right now, but can someone mark which requests have now made it in to one of the Betas?   Some that come to mind are:
- DJ -> Random Album
- More of this...
- Now Playing Quick button
- etc.

Would it be difficult to implement a middle Quick Button? I'm almost exclusively using the Power-Menu combination to lock the Vibez and am on the other hand always in a need for more Quick Buttons.

I can think of a few more additions, but some are probably too geeky to be used by anyone else but me....

  • Named setting profiles, including
  - color scheme, background, <while playing screen> items etc.
  - EQ preset name
  - power settings

I use the Vibez in my car (docked and powered), and portable (with headphones). Both with very different EQ and power settings. The in-dock option is already sufficient for backlight for each use, but EQ and background/colors changeover would be nice.

  • Tie the Vibez' <Docked> switch to a special <Docked> profile

  • Dynamic EQ bands: tie cut/boost of each of the EQ gain settings to the volume setting. For instance with volume below 10 the bass band and treble bands get a 6 dB boost, which gradually decrease with higher volume settings. In other words, "loudness". This is how it's supposed to work: first, define a lower limit, like, at or below volume <10>, EQ band 1 is at <+6> dB. At volume <25> or above, EQ band 1 is at <-3> dB (and everything in between is calculated by the Vibez).

  • Stop and delete currently playing track

  • Possibility to use black fonts on a white background for maximum visibility. As it is now, things get quite illegible.

This is already doable via custom color schemes.

Tried that. The while playing screen is illegible because of the black outline on the black typeface.

Pretty sure you can change the color of the font's outline, right?

I don't have the scheme template file in front of me, so I'm going by memory.

Yup. That's why there was some discussion of using a "haloing" text effect awhile back. Hopefully we'll see something like it eventually.

The important part is the "while locked" one. Of course you can fast forward and rewind.

Lots of good suggestions here; I'll add that my biggest frustration right now* is with the GUI; I really wish that pressing [left] would let me back out of settings pages (such as 'Play Screen'), just as it does menu pages.  Having to wheel down to 'Cancel' each time just kills me.  I know this would force options to scroll in an up and down manner, but I think most people use the wheel to toggle between choices anyway.

*Now that I've found RubenNYC's tips on gapless MP3 playback.
