And I forgot:

  • Paint a contrasting "shadow" or "halo" around the font's glyphs, such that the text's readability is improved, eg. if you select "album art" as the background image.

Plus:

- A "Play 1 Track" option (a la the Rio Carbon Developer's Cut firmware) which allows us to select whether playing 1  track (A) starts from the track (and treats the full album/directory it came from as the Now Playing list), or (B) plays just that track.

;-)

Ok, two features for the Playing Screen which have not been mentioned so far in this thread IIRC:

  • Allow to skip through tracks by rotating the wheel. (Not seeking, but skipping whole tracks.)
  • Allow to reach the editable "Now Playing" from the Playing Screen using a single button press.

Hear, hear! Making this a Quick Button option, as you proposed in your linked thread, seems like a great way to implement it, too.

Current wishlist. * = comments by me.

This is an updated version of Peregrine's Whishlist summary, the "*" indicating comments by Peregrine. Comments starting with "#" are mine.

I kept Peregrine's topic numbering and just added new entries at the bottom.

  • 1. the lock function. It would be nice to be able to FFWD or RWD through songs, in addition to PLAY/PAUSE while locked. Only disable the rotary VOL. *(The #1 agreed upon wishlist item) (# Can be solved in "soft hardware" by putting the Vibez into a skin bag. ;)

  • 2. nested playlisting

  • 3. support for AAC audio

  • 4. embedded cuesheets! would make it perfect

  • 5. Pick-an-album-at-random DJ mode, or alternatively a shuffle mode that keeps album tracks together in order

  • 6. "Go to album/artist" function for when listening to random mixes. I often hear a song on random play and then want to listen to the album it is from / more from the same artist.

  • 7. What I would really like is to use the scroll wheel to navigate the current playlist when pressing the center button. For some reason, the scroll wheel controls volume in this view only. Additionally, if this view had all of the Now Playing functionality, then I would be in heaven.

  • 8. Also a Pitch function that makes only the music/text faster/slower BUT with remaining at the same tone pitch, so that when I hear an Audio Book faster than normal the voice does not sound like Mickey Mouse!

  • 9. DJ - Great feature but would like to see a filter added from which the DJ pulls rather than the entire music library.  It would be nice to be able to choose Playlist, Genre, Year, etc. then choose Entertain Me, Top Tunes, etc.

  • 10. More robust organization within Genre, Year, Mood, etc.  Currently when you choose one of these, it lists all the tracks within that Genre and lists them alphabetically.  I'd like to see them listed by Artist, Album.  The Vibez has a great navigation UI for this - why not use it?

  • 11. RDS for the radio *(many agreed with this one, too)

  • 12. The ability to create & edit playlists independent of the Now Playing list.  Karma had this, vibez does not, and I feel a tinge of sadness every time I go looking for it.

  • 13. I'd really love the Vibez to have a pan/balance control.

  • 14. Backlight on track change like music clip tv channels do, they announce the track titles etc at the end and beginning of each track

  • 15. always start playing (or always pause) on power up, not remembering play/pause setting *(not sure this is possible with SAVING SETTINGS moved to powerdown)

  • 16. Two sets of "Power Saving" settings for battery and connected mode so we can configure the backlight to stay "always on" while the Vibez is sitting in its docking station.

  • 17. Automatically turn the backlight on if remote control codes are recognized while the device is connected to a power supply, so that the backlight switches on when using the docking station's remote control.

  • 18. Paint a contrasting "shadow" or "halo" around the font's glyphs, such that the text's readability is improved, eg. if you select "album art" as the background image. (# also collected a few nods)

  • 19. A "Play 1 Track" option (a la the Rio Carbon Developer's Cut firmware) which allows us to select whether playing 1  track (A) starts from the track (and treats the full album/directory it came from as the Now Playing list), or (B) plays just that track.

  • 20. Allow to reach the editable "Now Playing" list from the Playing Screen using a single button press, eg. by making it available as a "Quick Button" option. (# Being able to skim through tracks using the wheel, as I also suggested, probably is not really important any more if the "Now Playing" list can be reached more easily.)

Maybe it'd make sense to order this list by the effort required to implement each topic? However, that's probably impossible to estimate for me.

Thanks for compiling these wishes, guys. Here's a request I posted earlier in the beta firmware thread:

Quote by epithetless on 2008-02-01, 08:48:
Quick thought/suggestion: Would it be possible, when the Play/Pause button is mapped to a Quick Button like "Music Menu" or "Artist" to not have the corresponding screen start scrolling down automatically once the player goes to it? I like mapping my Play button to Artists, but I have to get the timing just right or I will end up either 1) just pausing the music (too short of a press), or 2) automatically scrolling down a few entries in the menu and have to manually scroll back to the beginning (too long of a press). I'd personally prefer that the player doesn't start scrolling down until a subsequent press of the down button is made...

So, to summarize: When Play/Pause is mapped to a Quick Button that opens to a menu/list (like "Music Menu" or "Artist"), don't start scrolling down until a subsequent press of the Play/Pause (aka Down) button is made.

This is more a general computer software wish than anything, but here goes:

I wish for one single application that:

1. Supports mass tagging of all my music formats (mp3, wma, ogg, flac)
2. Can bi-directionally sync ratings, playcounts and last played dates
3. Allows me to configure it not to write any ID3v1 tags, since ID3v1 breaks mp3 gaplessness on the vibez
4. Itself supports gapless playback of all formats.
5. Can apply updated tag info to tracks already on the vibez
6. Can transfer playlists defined on the computer to the vibez

Anybody want to take a stab at writing this perfect software?

Nested playlisting would be most excellent. IIRC, that hasn't been implemented in any player since the Nomad Jukebox 3 (2003ish). Loved it.

Karma had nested playlisting by accident.  ;)

Foobar does 1, 3 and 4.

Could 2, 5 and 6 be implemented in a Foobar plugin/module?

Hey defector.
While we wait firmware release that groups album tracks together... do you think you could slip in ability to order by year?

Audiobook/podcast features (resume within track is the main reason I have remained loyal to the RIO players)

A couple of others wishes useful for those of us who listen to audiobooks and podcasts:

21. Ability to set amount of time skipped when seeking. See http://www.riovolution.org/post/12892

22. Drill down further when selecting Spoken Word tracks. See http://www.riovolution.org/post/12589

No. (Er, IMO.) There's no way that that should be a user-settable thing. If it's wrong for you in long tracks, it's wrong for everyone, and what needs fixing is the "seek acceleration formula" by which small seeks (on the wheel, or on the "<" and ">" buttons) seek small distances, but longer seeks seek disproportionately longer distances.

The goal is that seeking all the way through an N-minute track takes less than O(N) time, but more than O(1). Perhaps O(sqrt(N)), which would correspond to actual Newtonian acceleration. Your complaint is actually that it ramps up too quickly in long tracks.

Yes, that seems like a better idea. I agree that there should be acceleration. Is the "smallest" seek distance related to track length, though? It seems that way. I just tried it with a 30-minute podcast, and could not make it move less than about 20 seconds, but with a 4-minute track I can make it move only 2 or 3 seconds.

Anyway, some adjustment (not necessarily user configurable) would help for podcasts and audiobooks. Thanks for your attention.

I too listen to audiobook sometimes and searched for a solution to reduce searching time. Depending of the ripping process some chapters are really too long. Using the session sometimes is not the solution.

Looking around in the internet I found this little tiny tool: www.AudiobookCutter.com
Audiobook Cutter is an easy-to-use tool which splits large MP3 audiobook files into smaller ones without re-encoding. The split points are determined automatically based on silence detection.
... track length between 15 seconds and 72 minutes ...

For me it made the management of podcasts and audiobooks much easier.
The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" but "That's funny..." (Isaac Asimov)
