What about Vera?!?

http://www.bitstream.com/font_rendering/products/dev_fonts…

Dunno' if it supports what we need here, I just know that my buddy that does a wee bit of developing uses it for anything he writes.

The Deja Vu fonts are an enhanced version of the Bitstream Vera font family.

The problem with the original Vera fonts is that Bitstream stopped development after the font were "finished". Thanks to their open license, volunteers could continue to improve the fonts with additional glyphs. The license forced a renaming of the improved fonts, thus the name "Deja Vu" was chosen. ;)

Greetings,

I would like to be able to drill down a little deeper when selecting "Spoken Word" tracks. It only goes to "Author" now, where you can select individual tracks or all tracks. I need to be able to select by book. I often have multiple books from a series loaded, and "All by Author" is not enough. I currently work around this by not including audiobooks in my Spoken Word filter and just selecting it like it was an album, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the Spoken Word filter.

Features that work well for Audiobooks (sessions, resume within track) are the main reason I have remained loyal to Rio players and now the Vibez.

Man, it did not take me long to fall in love with my Vibez...

Now, I know this has been recommended before, but I would just like to reinforce the wish that the "Playback List" (the one you center-click to from the Play Screen) be a duplicate of the "Now Playing" feature/screen in the menu, so that all the operations you can perform on the playlist via menu navigation are possible by just center-clicking to it once. I think this would provide a more logical and seamless experience; rarely do I want to see my place in the current playlist without having the ability to affect that playlist somehow.

And while I'm here, let me repeat that the ability to create, edit, and save playlists independent of the Now Playing list is also high on my list of wishes. Among Ruben NYC's reasons for wanting this, I'd like to add that I often (with my Karma and my Rockboxed devices) find my listening time is also the perfect time to create mixes to share with friends (an extension of the old mix-tape aesthetic), and it's awfully nice being able to construct and edit those mixes/playlists without interfering with whatever album I'm listening to at the moment.

Which reminds me: What format does the Vibez save its internal playlists in, and are those transferable/readable to the computer?

If it is the same as the Karma (which I expect it is) then the playlists on the device are a list of database IDs, and there is no way to get the playlist back off the player. I always felt that this was the one "miss" with the on-player playlist editor -there is no way to get them back onto your PC for safe keeping or transfer to another Karma (we have 3.5 in our household).

The guys who did (are doing?) the OMFS work (Karma filesystem mounted from Linux) figured out most of the structures that the Kamra uses.

The Vibez uses .PLA files. Aren't these the same one that the iRiver's use? Aren't they compatibale with WinAMP?
I swear I thought Media Monkey transfers them to the Vibez.

Just checked and MM did transfer usable playlists to the Vibez.

Oh... but you meant internal playlists... DOH.

Vibez saves playlists with a .WPL extension. WPL = WMP = transferable.

Yes. Of the four principal playlist formats, WPL is perhaps not the widest-supported, but the other three (M3U, PLS, ASX) cannot unambiguously represent non-ASCII characters.

When playlists are transferred to the Vibez over MTP, it's a little weird because the PC (WMP) gets to choose the file extension, but the Vibez gets to decide the file contents. WMP dictates a ".PLA" extension, and Vibez puts what are in fact WPL-format playlists in those files.

Is someone compiling a list of what's discussed here? That would be a great time saver!

Anyway I have a few on a wishlist of my own:

- Completely disable the wheel. Use the direction controls only. I have grown to dislike the wheel.
- Backlight on track change like music clip tv channels do, they announce the track titles etc at the end and beginning of each track
- always start playing (or always pause) on power up, not remembering play/pause setting
- power off with a simple press of the power button
- Possibly limited by hardware: lessen the blow on powerup. There's an earsplitting THUMP a few seconds after power up.

There's the "Skin Bag" available which solves this in, uhm, "soft hardware". ;)

While inside the bag, you cannot use the wheel at all but can still control the Vibez using the wheel edge keys. Probably not quite the solution you where looking for, but functionally equivalent.

That's a great idea, I'd love this feature. :-)

Yeah, that sounds like it could be a nice feature for in-car or docked use. FYI, the Rockbox folks have built this very option into their various firmwares -- they call it "Caption Backlight."

One more small feature request from me: In the Rio Carbon Developer's Cut firmware, we were given a "Play 1 Track" option which allowed us to select whether playing 1 track (A) starts from the track (and treats the full album it came from as the Now Playing list), or (B) plays just that track. As far as I can tell, the Vibez only performs option B (a la the earlier Rio incarnations). Any chance this feature could make it into the Vibez?

ALSO: I remember some combination of button presses with the Rio Karma (a click then hold of the menu button?) allowed you to automatically navigate directly to the album you last visited/chose in the Music Library. Is there any way to do something like this with the Vibez, or should I add it to the wishlist? :-p

The beta firmware (from v1.11) has this: press Menu then press and hold the right key over "Music Library".  It takes you back to the position from where you selected your current selection.

Awesome. Thanks for the info -- I missed that somehow!

Current wishlist. * = comments by me.
I was going to compile a list of things that we asked for and recieved. That's a pretty long list, as well. We are damn lucky. Thanks for everything Trekstor/Defector. (Now just get that damn dock to the states, please!!!)
Number order means nothing. I only did that to make it easier to comment on wishes. ;)

1 Re: the lock function. It would be nice to be able to FFWD or RWD through songs, in addition to PLAY/PAUSE while locked. Only disable the rotary VOL. *(The #1 agreed upon wishlist item)

2 nested playlisting

3 support for AAC audio

4 embedded cuesheets! would make it perfect

5 Pick-an-album-at-random DJ mode, or alternatively a shuffle mode that keeps album tracks together in order

6 "Go to album/artist" function for when listening to random mixes. I often hear a song on random play and then want to listen to the album it is from / more from the same artist.

7 What I would really like is to use the scroll wheel to navigate the current playlist when pressing the center button. For some reason, the scroll wheel controls volume in this view only. Additionally, if this view had all of the Now Playing functionality, then I would be in heaven.

8 Also a Pitch function that makes only the music/text faster/slower BUT with remaining at the same tone pitch, so that when I hear an Audio Book faster than normal the voice does not sound like Mickey Mouse!

9 DJ - Great feature but would like to see a filter added from which the DJ pulls rather than the entire music library.  It would be nice to be able to choose Playlist, Genre, Year, etc. then choose Entertain Me, Top Tunes, etc.

10 More robust organization within Genre, Year, Mood, etc.  Currently when you choose one of these, it lists all the tracks within that Genre and lists them alphabetically.  I'd like to see them listed by Artist, Album.  The Vibez has a great navigation UI for this - why not use it?

11 RDS for the radio *(many agreed with this one, too)

12 The ability to create & edit playlists independent of the Now Playing list.  Karma had this, vibez does not, and I feel a tinge of sadness every time I go looking for it.

13 I'd really love the Vibez to have a pan/balance control.

14 Backlight on track change like music clip tv channels do, they announce the track titles etc at the end and beginning of each track

15 always start playing (or always pause) on power up, not remembering play/pause setting *(not sure this is possible with SAVING SETTINGS moved to powerdown)

Add the following:

  • Two sets of "Power Saving" settings for battery and connected mode so we can configure the backlight to stay "always on" while the Vibez is sitting in its docking station.
  • Automatically turn the backlight on if remote control codes are recognized while the device is connected to a power supply, so that the backlight switches on when using the docking station's remote control.
