and then also to have your tech support department fend off all the people complaining that they can't play their iTunes purchased content on your player, as they wrongly assumed that AAC support means iTunes store support.

That would be annoying, I agree.  Its too bad that we have to think about such things...

I agree with floorten's requests, as well as this one:

- Re: the lock function. It would be nice to be able to FFWD or RWD through songs, in addition to PLAY/PAUSE while locked. Only disable the rotary VOL.

The ability to disable only the rotary function of the scroll wheel/D-pad would be sublime.

Ditto....Ditto....and Ditto.

AAC isn't a problem for anyone to implement, it's just that it costs to license the codec - and then also to have your tech support department fend off all the people complaining that they can't play their iTunes purchased content on your player, as they wrongly assumed that AAC support means iTunes store support.

Haha, just call them "idiots", "morons", "bonkers" and they will go away.

...yes, I know it is not a viable business practice, but it would be fun!

Yea, the Wheel does PITCHBEND, SEEK and BRIGHTNESS. Touch the wheel. When VOL comes up, press LEFT and you can toggle between the 4 options.

Better quality screen?!? I'm puzzled by that one. I have ZERO complaints about that. I think it's very pretty. Then again, I haven't seen as many as you have. lol

ok yeah, you're right, i just didn't know how to do it. i never RTFM :)

i guess the licensing issue is the main problem then, since not too many nubes are gonna buy a device like this.

but what is it, like $1 per unit? whatever it is, perhaps a software plug-in could be purchased to support additional codecs. Archos took this route with their latest round of PMPs.

OGG is good enough for me personally but i know some people are already into AAC since it works with the iPod & Zune.

Subject: now playing functionality
What I would really like is to use the scroll wheel to navigate the current playlist when pressing the center button. For some reason, the scroll wheel controls volume in this view only. Additionally, if this view had all of the Now Playing functionality, then I would be in heaven.

I thought you could already do this.  The only quirk is that you have to click Menu > Now Playing to do this.

Its an extra step I'd rather not have.  Before my wheel broke, I used reorder on the Karma all the time.

I noticed that too. In the Now Playing screen, when you click the center-select button, it gives you a Now Playing list that isn't functional like the Now Playing playlist (Main Menu > Now Playing). Wouldn't it make more sense for the center-select to bring up the Now Playing _playlist_ ..? At least, there should be some way to move up and down in the Now Playing list other than using the FF and RW buttons to advance one track a time.

Right, that's the whole point. Running-order editing on the Karma worked the way you're asking for, and it was a real problem: Riovolution had a constant stream of people who had just never found the running-order editing facilities. (You had to press the stick, then press the wheel -- and the entire rest of the UI could be operated without knowing that the stick or wheel was even pressable.)

So, in the Sigmatel Cambridge reference firmware, it was changed so that running-order editing was available from the menu system, where it's much harder to miss, and conversely so that all the "main player screens" are informational only, with all the "functional" screens available from the menus. It's more consistent that way, and it's IMO only people who've got used to the Karma's inconsistent way of doing it who would want it otherwise...

But, but...for those of us who are loyal, it's inconsistent to change from the inconsistency! ;-)

Zune does aac? I did not know that. Ogg is quite good lossy, and open source, but aac is very good lossy.

Hm. I see what you're saying, Peter, but it seems to me (and maybe just me), that the "main player" screens should be "functional" in addition to the "functional" screens being accessible from the menu system. For those who are unable to find functional screens with things like wheel presses, the menu system paths would be necessary and obvious -- and for those who appreciate a more fluid interface (aka us Karmaphiles), the shortcuts would be invaluable.

Hey, I get that.  I had my Karma about 2 months before I found the editing screen (didn't realize you could press the wheel).  But why 2 screens?  If you're going to put it in the menu why not have the center button take you to that menu as well.  IMO the current track order screen isn't very useful.  If it is a difficult implementation (doesn't seem it to me, but I'm not a programmer), then I'd understand.

EDIT:  I think I get it.  If pressing center brought you to the Now Playing menu, you couldn't just press center again to bring you back, ala the Karma.  Pressing center would then start the editing functions, right?  This might be a bit of UI confusion for us Karma users as well.

I'm not fully up to date, but till some months ago Vorbis regularly scored as high or higher than AAC in double blind testing for perceptual transparency.

Edit: Apparently it still does: http://www.soundexpert.info/coders192.jsp
