I'd say you made a good choice.

I had an iAudio M3 and the sound was awsome.  The controls sucked and the gaps drove me crazy.

When the battery died I went for a 1st gen iPod Nano with Rockbox.  Gapless ruled, but the sound was so dull, the Rockbox/Vorbis combo meant charging every night and I couldn't use the clickwheel (though my gf's 5th gen iPod w/Apple fw has a good clickwheel and sounds good too.)

Now I have a Vibez which sounds great and has everything I want and I'm happy.  But I do find myself missing some of the Rockbox features, and the M3's sound did sparkle so.

Maybe you needed to work on the EQ settings some.  The sound curve is identical between original fw and rockbox on most targets.

Not really.  The iAudio is probably a good bet.  You missed the deal on the $100 40GB Toshiba Gigabeat (Rockboxable) though.
After messing around with Rockbox on my dad's Sandisk Sansa, I seriously think I'm gonna get a Gigabeat. I'm an options whore, and 30 gigs would be good enough that I could have the same 20 gigs worth of music that I have on my Karma as well as extra room for whatever new music I get as well as some TV shows.

Yes, I assumed Apple had made big sound improvements between the 1st gen Nano and the 5th gen iPod - I didn't blame it on Rockbox.  I think Rockbox on the X5 would sound awsome.

Yes, yes it does.  When my faithful Karma finally went into its death spiral, I picked up a 60GB X5 and Rockboxed it, and it sounds great.  Note that the line-out on the X5 has been accused of some serious problems, including severe bass roll-off.  However, it works quite well for me hooked up to a Ray Samuels SR-71 portable amp.  YMMV.  The headphone output is pretty solid, regardless.

I second that. The rockboxed X5 is really great. I cannot really compare it, since I neither have a lot of experience, nor am I an audiophile, but it does sound great. And is gapless. And very customizable. And you can keep that open source-hardcore-1337 look with the bland black&white text.

Subject: Sansa View
It appears finally another DAP other than a Rockboxed'd DAP will have gapless support. According to DAPreview the Sansa View will play back gapless.
