pretty nice form factor on the cornice
I would have rather it be a standard compact flash type hard drive, though.

The drive is the "new" standard for 1" HDDs - this drive is physically and electrically interchangeable with Hitachi and Seagate's new 1" drives. Nobody is shipping over 12GB yet though... but when they do, they should just drop in :)

Fair enough, but I can't use it in my Carbon and you can't use it in your camera.

That's true, but who's making 12GB CF Microdrives? Nobody, that's who.

It's odd that there's yet another size/connector for small storage, isn't it? Anyone know why this was done? To make things slightly smaller? To avoid licensing costs? Faster speeds?

(Not why it was done in the Vibez. I know TrekStor didn't invent this new standard; they're just using what the 1" HDD manufacturers have decided is the new interface. I'm wondering why the HDD manufacturers decided on it.)

It did always seem odd that devices were shipping with storage on CF cards that you couldn't physically get at to replace without opening up the machine, but it also made sense in a "why reinvent the wheel" way.

Of course, the vast majority of people don't open their devices up and replace the storage in them so the choice of interface isn't a big deal. I'm really just curious about why a new interface has appeared.
Bit the shed again. Typical.

Almost certainly the first of those. CF is unnecessarily bulky (compared to the tiny connectors that these "flex cables" use). You don't need that kind of robustness against multiple insertions, for something that's not (designed to be) user-replaceable.

Electrically it's the same. If you put them side by side you'll see that the new form factor is a lot like the old one without the CF connector housing on it (which is a very inefficient way of getting 50 electrical connections to a drive that's embedded in a device).

The new ones have a 35 pin flex connector - electrically, that's all you need for an ATA drive - and they've also made it slightly thinner which I believe is due to improvements in the motor design.

makes sense to ditch the CF form factor for embedded devices, as you said.

wish these Microdrives were a little faster though, even if just while in USB mode for loading media. still seems slow compared to flash.
