the Carbon Firmware 3.04 made it possible to change between MTP and MSC directly on the device

I'm not sure but I think the Carbon shipped from the factory with this option. Or at least my 6 gig did.

The Carbon (5GB) was released in late September 2004 and MTP/Janus/Subscription was added in mid July 2005 with the 1.95 firmware.

I suppose the only positive of MTP is that the database update is done whist transferring song, rather than after you disconnect.

Makes sense. I got mine around August '05 (came w/ 1.95 pre-loaded). Damned thing died a month after I spent $60 on a year's subscription to Yahoo Unlimited. :(
MTP wasn't much of an issue for me since RMM transferred just about anything I threw at it. But yeah, I can see the downside of having to choose between editing the registry or using Windows Media Player. Personally, I'd rather risk the registry hack.

If I can ever get a Vibez with respectable storage-size, I'll be doing this :(

There is another way to switch the vibez from MTP to Mass Storage. I don't remember where I read about this (and I'm too lazy to try to find it), but I think it was in reference to the Insignia NS-DV4G. Sorry I can't give credit where it is due, but I'll attempt to describe the process here. The advantage is that you don't have to muck about in the registry. Perhaps Peter can tell us if there are any disadvantages? This works for me in Windows XP SP2.

1. Open Windows' Device Manager
2. Find the vibez in the list of devices
3. Right-click and select "Update Driver..."
4. Choose "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)", then click Next
5. Choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.", then click Next
6. Make sure that "Show compatible hardware" is checked
7. There should be two "Models" available, "MTP Device" and "USB Mass Storage Device", choose whichever one you want to switch to, then click Next
8. Wait for Windows to do it's thing then click Finish

Shouldn't be, not if it works. That's very cool. If I'd known about that, I wouldn't have bothered figuring out the registry way. Thanks theRover!

Subject: It's a puzzle switching back to MTP mode
I tried the "device manager" method of switching my vibez into usb mode. It switched over OK, but there was no quick way of switching back to MTP mode. I was not offered the MTP driver by Win XP's device manager, only disk drivers.

In order to switch back, I had to hunt for "vibez" in the registry and delete every key. After that, the device reinstalled as MTP.

It works going both ways for me. I don't know what to tell ya, other than maybe double-check #6.

Works both ways for me, too. Thanks Rover.

Well, it did anyway.
Bit aggravated.
I changed the Vibez to MSC on my work computer. Went back and checked and it would allow me to switch back to MTP. Connect to home PC and it's back in MTP. Switched via Rovers' method. Now it is my H drive in Media Monkey. However, when I try to synch I get "NO ACTIVE DEVICE HAS BEEN DETECTED". Click CONFIGURE and select the correct drive and it still won't work. MM claims pretty much any USB drive will work, but I cannot get it to. So I go back to switch it to MTP and it is now like Komarek said. No other choice but USB DRIVE.
I deleted my content to resynch everything after fixing all my COVER TUNES and adding some MOODS and to fix some tracks that say they were played in the year 2012.
.....
Back in MTP node now using Peters' method, but why the eff can't I get MM to synch it in MSC mode?

Subject: MediaMonkey with vibez
During the time I had my vibez set in USB Drive mode, I couldn't get MediaMonkey to work with it either. I did not invest a lot of time trying to figure it out. I went to switch the thing back to MTP, and had the "user experience" I described earlier.

I think the problem switching a device back and forth probably results from a recent windows "fix." I've been doing some maintenance on my machine - installed a new boot drive. Until I ran microsoft update about 30 times it did not register my vibez at all. Of course it worked fine before the "upgrade."

I remember it being possible to get Windows XP to run through a complete list of drivers for just about anything. I suppose this is one of those things that just went away without notice.

Trekstor could help us out by posting their drivers - and instructions - on their website. Maybe a batch file for mode switching, too.

Subject: MediaMonkey - reporting problems, debugging tools
If other users come up with a MediaMonkey problem, here's the process for reporting it to the developers. It's from http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69.

Quote by "rusty":
We've tested a fair number of devices in-house, however, there are some device/OS combinations which we've been unable to test.  If you are having a problem that you think is a bug, please provide the following information in order to help us solve it:

a) Please send a debug log that shows the transfer and illustrates the bug on a device with as few tracks as possible (see step 5 at: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=69 ).

b) For an iPod, please also send the \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB and iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo files

c) For an MTP device, please also use the following tool to generate information about the device's internal structure that'll help us determine the root of device incompatibility issues: http://www.mediamonkey.com/beta/testtools/WMLog.exe

To use the tool, save it to the /Program Files/MediaMonkey directory and run it after connecting your device.  It'll generate a log that is saved to C:\MMLog.txt.

This information will help us resolve any compatibility issues as quickly as possible.  Thanks for all your help!

It won't transfer at all in MSC mode so we can't send them any logs.

I re-stumbled upon the instructions I had mentioned regarding switching between MTP/MSC modes using Windows' Device Manager. In the interest of giving credit where due, I'm posting the link here. This method still works for me, though others have mentioned problems. YMMV. These instructions may be clearer than what I had posted. Good luck.
