Subject: How to force MSC mode for Trekstor Vibez
Trekstor Vibez, like any MSC/MTP device which switches protocols automatically, always comes up as MTP in Windows XP.

If you don't want that -- if, for instance, you want to run applications from the Vibez's hard disk -- then you can use the Windows Registry to force Windows to use MSC mode.

There are some important caveats to this -

  • DRM content, including purchased and subscription content from the likes of Napster-to-go, cannot be transferred in MSC mode.
  • Editing the Windows registry is dangerous for non-experts. It could all end in tears, or, worse, in re-installing Windows.
  • Neither Sigmatel nor Trekstor can take any responsibility, or offer any support, for people who mess with their registries in this sort of way.

But, if you're a DRM-less Windows expert who's happy with all that, the procedure is as follows:

  • Unplug your Trekstor Vibez.
  • Run regedit and find this registry key:
\\HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_066f&Pid_842a
  • Right-click on the Vid_066f&Pid_842a key, choose Permissions, and tick (check) "Full Control" in the "Allow" column.
  • Click OK to close the Permissions dialog.
  • Right-click again on the Vid_066f&Pid_842a key, choose Delete.
  • Now go and find this registry key:
\\HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\UsbFlags\ 066f842a0110
  • It has a subkey osvc of type REG_BINARY. Normally this key is set to the two bytes "01 42". Set it to "00 00" instead.
  • Then plug your Vibez back in. It should come up as mass-storage.

To Reverse The Change And Get MTP Back Again

  • Unplug your Trekstor Vibez.
  • Go and delete the Vid_066f&Pid_842a key as above.
  • Then go and delete the 066f842a0110 key too.
  • Then plug your Vibez back in. It should re-enumerate from scratch and come up in MTP.

Outstanding!  FAQ it!  :)

Thanks to peter, I think we are now officially the #1 support resource for Trekstor Vibez owners worldwide.

I'd suggest backing up your registry before doing this, as well as after, so you can switch back and forth easily.

Now why would I want to do that??

You wouldn't. Any registry changes that occur thereafter would be wiped every time you switch. A much better idea is to create a pair of .reg files which automatically make the necessary changes. Don't know how it'll handle the permissions though.

Is there any chance for an option to force the Vibez into MSC on the device? The Sansa e200 and Samsung Z5 can be switched between MTP and MSC/UMS directly on the device without any registry hacking.

Those of us who aren't computer whizzes wouldn't want to mess with the registry. A firmware update like on the Carbon and Forge which allows you to change between MTP and MSC would be the best solution.  Is this possible?

That's a rhetorical question if I ever heard one.

Why is the question rhetorical?
Regardless, the Carbon Firmware 3.04 made it possible to change between MTP and MSC directly on the device. I am asking (Peter) or anyone as knowledgable if there will be a future firmware update to make this possible on the Vibez.

I'm not sure but I think the Carbon shipped from the factory with this option. Or at least my 6 gig did.

Why is the question rhetorical?

Because the answer is obvious and the question was actually meant as a request.
