Subject: Moving music to a Rio Karma Without RMM
Is there a way to manage my music on my Rio Karma without using RMM or RMML?  Neither programs work on my computer, and I would like to be able to add and delete music on my Karma.  Thanks

Yep. If you're using Windows, check out MediaMonkey, which has pretty good Karma support.

What OS are you running that neither of these apps work?

If you are going to hook it up to a PC I'd try Red Chair Software's RioRad Explorer (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/riorad/ ). Runs on Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP. It has tons of good features. Red Chair also makes versions of the software for Creative, Apple and other major lines that don't offer MSC support.

If you have a linux application I've heard tons of good things about Amarok (http://amarok.kde.org/ ). Some think its the best media player in the business. They just added Rio Kamra support.

I'm not sure how to hook up the player to a Mac but someone else might have a idea about that.

He's using a fuxed install of Windows, from a botched SP2 slipstream disc.  I'll bring home an XP-Pro CD image.

I've seen people recomment Media Moneky before, but I just tried it last night on Lycos' recommendation.
Wow! It freaking ROCKS! Still early to tell but I think it might be the best I've used.

Thanks, ild2

Yes, it does. You just need to make sure you have the non-MSC drivers installed, and it should pick it up no problem

Is it fast or slow?  What I mean is that I don't use WMP or Musicmatch and the like because it takes absolutely forever to load the Karma.  I occasionally use dbPowerAmp, which works ok.
If I had a signature, think I'd share it with YOU?

I have the non-MSC drivers - Rio MM works fine. I just wanted to see, if Mediamonkey may be a better alternative.

I installed Mediamonkey 2.5.4 final, but I don't see my Karma... (I guess it should appear in a "devices" node)

Subject: RIOMM locks up, looking for something better...
RIOMM was working fine until recently. Now it hogs 99% of my PC's CPU (XP SP2) and cannot either find folders or or locks up scanning folders. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. It was ok the first time but as soon as I added music back it did the same thing. I am thinking about taking the whole music library off of the PC and burning it to DVD and then adding it back one folder at a time, but was just wondering if there was just a better third party alternative? We have two older rio players, a Forge and a Nitrus. The nitrus has the newest firmware, I believe. The Forge won't seem to take an upgrade but none of the problems seem to occur with the players, just the software 'managing' the files.

Might be a corrupt database. Try deleting/renaming your database file and letting RMM rebuild from scratch. The file is called source0.db and should be in your "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Rio\Rio Music Manager" folder.

Then the next time RMM starts up it rescans your folders to rebuild the library database from scratch.

If this still fails, grab a CAT5 cable, hook that dock up to your router and use RMML.
