I think there is something with the red gene being on a Y chromosome explaining why orange striped cats are always male too, but I'm not 100% sure about that one.
(BachSci in Biology speaking, who had a tremendous fondness for genetics, particularly as they apply to kitties.)

It's what's known as a sex-linked trait, actually, like hemophilia - there ARE female orange tabbies (my parents have one), but they're considerably less common than the males.  The reason is that it's a recessive gene on the X (not Y) chromosome.  Since males only have one X chromosome, recessive traits manifest regardless, whereas, with females, if one of the X chromosomes contains a dominant trait, that's what turns up.  A female with two X chromosomes, each of which bear the orange tabby gene, will be an orange tabby.
