Subject: Thumbs down^H^H^H^Hup for the InvisibleShield
InvisibleShield, the plastic stuff you can buy cut to fit various things including DAPs, seemed like a great idea. I hate my iPod's iSkin Evo3 case because it makes it almost twice as thick and IMO looks pretty ugly as well so the idea of having this really strong, yet thin and transparent, material covering almost all of the DAP sounded ideal. (It doesn't cover the corners and some of the areas around the ports but I can live with that.)

Problem is, the thing is IMPOSSIBLE to apply. It says you should spray this stuff that comes with it on it and them apply it and move it into position but the stuff dries really quickly, and there's far too much friction to move it anyway unless you only have a small part of the material in contact with the DAP, so it's really hard to align properly. (Plus it's transparent so you can't see if it's perfectly lined up until you get to the other side of the device and realise you weren't quite straight.)

So you end up peeling it off and trying again a few times. By the time you have the damn stuff on straight it's covered in dust (despite cleaning the DAP beforehand) and other crap on the sticky side, or you've stretched it trying to peel it off, which leaves horrible lines in the material.

ARGH.

The dust and stretch-lines look terrible when they're over the screen. Worse than any scratch ever would.

I've just ruined my second batch of InvisibleShield and decided to give up on the stupid thing. Gone back to my chunky iSkin case. :-( I think this stuff would be great if applied by an expert with no fingerprints, perfect aim and in a dust-free environment but that's the only situation in which I could possibly recommend it. :-( (It's not just me being a clumsy either, lots of people say the same sorts of thing on the web.)

If you do get this stuff, try the "run a hot shower to make steam to take the dust out of the air" trick as then all you'll have to worry about is getting it on straight and not stretching it if you end up having to pull if off a few times. Oh god, now I'm tempted to buy a 3rd batch and try that, but I think it could only end up with more frustration.

WTF isn't there a single good iPod case on the market? So many cases and every single one of them sucks somehow. (Belt clips... WTF are they about? Who wants their DAP on a beltclip? Who wants a "detachable" clip which leaves behind a huge link of plastic that sticks out, makes the thing wider and catches on things??)

I bought a clear polycarbonate case at Target for like $20.  It looks kinda ghetto because I leave it in my bag all the time and it's scratched to hell, but I know that those scratches would just be on the iPod otherwise.  Plus it makes it kinda fat.  But there's no belt clip nub, so I'm happy about that.

Edit: This is the case I have.  They have some stupid accessory kit on there too, but all I have is the Videoshield Cover and it does its job admirably.

Thanks for the link. I'm thinking about a case like that. I did read, though, that they can scratch the DAP inside them if dust gets in (which it will) and rubs against them so I wasn't sure. Have you found it okay from that point of view? (The comments I read were about the Agent 18 VideoShield case which is different, but very similar by the look of it. People saying it tended to crack under the wheel put me off even more.)

What I really want is a really thin silicone case but nobody seems to make them. Maybe such a thing wouldn't be protective enough? The iSkin is gratuitously thick, though.

All this makes me feel like jacking in my job and getting into the case business. There must be a lot of money to be made from a good case design. :)

I can't really imagine the iPod moving around inside the case, it's a really tight fit.  The couple times I've taken it out, it still looks flawless.  The only gripes I have about this case are the price ($25 for a little piece of plastic) and that the plastic seems kinda soft.  It's been riding alone in a side pocket of a bag I've got for a while now, and the fabric itself has scratched the case over the screen.  The case snaps together, but it doesn't seem like it will come apart accidentally (actually, it's a bit difficult to open it back up).

I've had the Agent 18 case for about 1 day now. Seems fine :) Certainly looks good, and I actually like the belt clip.

I got a Best Skins Ever skin, which is supposedly the same material as the Invisible Shield (but cheaper).  They recommend wetting the sticky side of the skin with a soap and water solution so that it slides around and you can position it correctly.  It took me a couple of tries to get the positioning right, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Hmm, sod it, those ones are so much cheaper I just ordered 3 (= free shipping) to give it another go. With three more attempts I'll have to manage it!

If not then I might get the clear case. Or stick with the iSkin (which is very protective, I like that aspect, it's just so big).

Here's the one I want:

I bought the Speck Toughskin and ended up with scratches on the back from dust getting in, plus it literally doubles the iPod's thickness. My favorite was probably the cheapo silicone skin I got from Rite-Aid, but they're not very durable and they pick up more lint than a belly-button.
Here's a link to some iLounge ratings if you're interested:

Aina?

Thanks, actually.  I've been trying to figure out how to blow my lifes savings on something I don't really need, and the other cases just weren't expensive enough.

I have a vaja case for my karma and it's actually really nice. I'm thinking about an ipod one, but not sure if I like the design enough.

My sarcasm may have been a bit thick: I was being dead serious about thanking Highnoon for Vaja, and in the same breath, making fun of how expensive their cases tend to be.

I really like their design, but all the iPod cases are way too thick.  One of the big draws of the iPod is how thin it is, and I don't want to wind up with something that's as thick as the Karma was, but twice as long.  The belt clip is only a mild appeasement to the thickness problem.

That being said, the more I think about it, the more I like the iLuv i604.  I figure if I replace the stock battery with a 950mAh battery, then use the iLuv, that should give me a good week of music enjoyment for when I'm away from electricity.  Well, either that, or try to find a solar pack that provides the necessary current for the iPod charger.

Just applied the skin I got from BestSkinsEver* and I take back everything I said; these things are great, provided you know how to apply them. My problem before was not using enough liquid so the things stuck too quickly. Part of that problem was InvisibleShield coming with a little spray of liquid which quickly runs out so you have to ration yourself. Turns out it's just a bit of soap + water so, as per the BestSkinsEver instructions, I made up a dish of that and dunked the whole skin in it. It was MUCH easier to apply, I could move it around as much as I needed to to line things up, and it didn't pick up loads of fingerprints and other crap, nor get stretched or have any bubbles that I couldn't remove quickly and easily.

So, I think these things are great now. The important things to do are to get a dust free environment (I ran a hot shower for 10 minutes and then did everything in the bathroom), wash and scrub your fingertips, and dunk the skin in some slightly soapy water.

The only downsides, apart from the risk of getting your expensive bit of hardware wet during application (good excuse to buy an 80gig if I break this one!) is that there's no protection for the corners and around the dock connector, and no shock protection if you drop the device. I can live with that for the improvement in size and looks over my Evo2 case.

I've got an iVak case waiting at the parcel depot so I might use that as well but I'm not sure. Depends what it's like in the flesh and how much bulk it adds. I only ordered it in case I gave up on the skins.

(*Well, the front one. I chose to use the spare back one I got from InvisibleShield as it covers slightly more of the corners than the BestSkinsEver one. The front ones seem identical, though, and BestSkinsEver charge much less.)
Bit the shed again. Typical.
