I tried to ping it, actually. That's why I found it so bizarre, is I tried to ping it and it wouldn't resolve. I forgot how to flush the cache though, and since nothing else seemed to be affected (and I suspected that if I did flush it, the DNS might have dropped system09.org and I was the first to find out), I should ask someone.
Of course, if I had used nslookup and it had functioned normally, I then would have had to ping the IP address to see if the server was functioning or if there was something weird going on with my IRC client.
FWIW, OS X does indeed have a ping function. I haven't tried to do too much in Terminal, but IME it has most of the tools you'd expect from a basic Linux install.
