Subject: ipods are gapless...
It's official - his Steveness just announced the next gen ipods with support for gapless mp3, aac and alac. Plus it's 80gb. I think I should order one....

I'll believe it when I see it.  No portable device has done gapless mp3 properly yet.

Well the vorbis and flac are never going to happen. Gapless mp3 is tough it's true, and I too want some reviews before splashing the cash - but to be honest gapless aac would work for me. My main archive is flac, but I currently keep a vorbis shadow archive for my Karma. I'd be perfectly happy to switch that to aac in exchange for a color screen & 80gb.

What I think is funny is that now rockbox has proven that gapless on an ipod is possible, and after years of isheep bleeting that it's not important, suddenly it's a major feature. I don't want to give my cash to Steve, but right now at $350 for an 80gb gapless player, it's the best deal in town.

Yeah, from a purely function-based standpoint, we now have a lot less ammunition in the Fight Against Evil. The UI still won't be as good as the Karma's, ditto the EQ, but we're now to the point where personal taste is just about an admissible argument.

What I hope this means is that all the other companies will quickly follow Apple's amazingly innovative lead and do it the same, but better. And hopefully cheaper.

That's awesome. :-D

OK, I can admit it now.  We bought my father-in-law an ipod for his birthday last month.  I kind of like it.  Of course, I laid down the $300 for the 30gb, so I'm pissed.  Think a firmware upgrade will allow 5g to do gapless?

There was a firmwqare update for the 5G that apparently doesn't make it gapless.  All it lets you do is buy games from itunes for $5 a pop.
EDIT: Apparently the firmware upgrade does make the 5g gapless.

If they can pull off gapless as good as the Karma it looks like I'm buying one. I'll miss the lack of Ogg Vorbis but oh well, most of my stuff is mp3 anyway except a few soundtracks from games. Now where is the 120gb model? Not that I think I could use 80gb, having around 30gb at the moment.

Hold up.  Some of the peeps over at HydrogenAudio have played around with iTunes 7, and they're saying that you actually have to go in and flag the tracks that are "part of a gapless album" (there's like a checkbox or something).  IANAEngineer, but that says to me that this is some sort of artificial solution, not true gapless.  If it were true Karma-esque gapless, it would Just Work without having to be told, no?

EDIT:  Not that I'm not salivating over 80GB of gapless tracks... I'll switch back from vorbis to mp3 in a heartbeat if this is legit, but I don't trust apple to do this right.  They never gave a crap before.

Yup, my sources tell me that it's basically designed to integrate using cue sheets into the UI a bit me than previously.

damn. nevermind. 60gb and rockbox is way better than 20 extra gigs and a hacked together retarded gapless solution.
