Just got back from zero7 at the Fine Line.

Lighting and sound: average.
Band: what I expected - they funk things up a bit live.

Did I mention both Jose Gonzalez and Sia where there? Jose = dependable.

Sia has to be one of the best vocalists in the world. Hands down. Her intonation was stellar in a club environment, and everything she did was perfect.

And 'Distractions' from 'Simple Things' was the sluttiest, lustiest, bluesiest ever. I jabbed some random chick in the butt with my hardon, accidently.

I'm going to Bob Dylan today in Fargo.  I still don't know exactly what to expect.  From the few recent videos of him I saw on YouTube, his voice still sucks (obviously).  Then again, I'm going with a couple of friends who have already seen him 3 times in the past couple years.  So there must be something good about it if they keep going back.  Plus it's the whole seeing the legend perform thing too.  It's outdoors at a minor league baseball stadium, but we're at the front row, so we shouldn't be hearing any shitty PA speakers.

I went to Violent Femmes about a month ago at the Bratwerst Festival in Sheboygan, WI.  We were up against the rail in the front and therefore in front of the speakers, so the sound sucked.  75,000 people were there for their concert, so that was pretty cool.  They played an amazing set, and I heard pretty much everything I really wanted to.  Also, they had the 'Horns Of Dillema' with them, which was basicall a 9 or 10-piece horn section who were also the roadies.  Definately a fun concert though and I'd highly reccomend seeing them.

I suppose I'll post my Dylan review when I get back

zero7 were excellent in Leeds recently, looking forward to Corinne Bailey Rae at the same venue next month.

We currently have Robbie Williams in Leeds, playing in Roundhay Park. Probably doesn't mean much to you Americans, but it's a big event here - Link

I checked Google Pedometer, and it reports my house is 1.5 miles from the venue as the crow flies, yet I could hear it from my doorstep last night, clear as a bell (admittedly it was a still, clear night). It made me wonder (flatty, perhaps you know the answer) what kind of insanely powerful equipment must be required to produce such a noise? I can't comprehend how loud it must have been in the park itself. That sort of volume is pretty strictly regulated these days, right?

I'm not a huge concert person, I often find the artists I like aren't as good live as recorded. Anyhoo...a while ago I saw Black Eyed Peas & Gwen Stefani in Philly, that was pretty cool although BEP were far more entertaining than Gwen, who I'm pretty much "over". Saw Imogen Heap in NYC more recently, and that was just OK. She did a lot of acoustic & accapella versions of the songs we liked and they just weren't as good as the fully arranged versions. But she was very sweet and english on stage, which is a plus.

Next event we have tickets for is the Pet Shop Boys @ Radio City Music Hall, which is gonna be a blast. I know they're seriously lacking in cred but I was a huge fan as a kid and have been to every tour they've done - can't miss this one :)  Their shows are always camp in the extreme, but not like anything else you'll ever see. After that is Bob Dylan - my fiance is a huge fan - at MSG. I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to it or not, but it'll be an experience!

Most of my "live" music experiences are in clubs, and I'm a big fan of Made Events (madeevents.com). They have been bringing top class european DJs over to NYC for a few years now and some of their events have been awesome (Paul Van Dyk in Central Park, Armin Van Buuren at the Brooklyn Bridge). Gabriel & Dresden are playing at Pacha next week and I hope to go to that.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Imogen Heap works the live angle when she's in San Francisco in December... hopefully. Still not sure if I can justify going to a concert the Sunday after a week of dress rehearsals and performances for one show and before a week of dress rehearsals and performances for another while school is going on at the same time, but we'll see.

Quite magnificently. Looped tracks, etc.

The big revolution in sound, just in the time I've been doing it, is the implementation of line array technology.

Here's the long version: http://www.prosoundweb.com/lsi/tech/la/la.php

Here's my version:

When you stack speakers together in a special way, they start to couple together. This results in two desirable characteristics: 1) the sound is "beamed" in a particular direction, and 2) the sound doesn't fall off as quickly over a given distance. There's something called the "inverse square law" that says there's a 6db loss for every doubling of the distance. With a line array, that drops down to 3db for every doubling.

Let me put it this way: the company I work for has both types of PA. The line array is a sunovabitch to get sounding good. But it sounds better AND louder an order of magnitude farther than the conventional stuff. And that's why you can hear it at your house. :D

Bah! I've been poor and friendless this summer, so I haven;t been to many, but I normally go to a lot of live music.

Last band I saw was Isis in London, play Oceanic in it's entirety. That was amazing; the venue was perfect, acoustics were awesome and their sound was so perfectly balanced (they have their own sound guy, which every band should have). Only two gripes: they didn't bring along their female singer who is required for one track, plus they didn't play the new song they'd played the night before.

Coming up, I have Opeth in November and Tool in December, plus a multitude of smaller, local gigs.

So which band/artist is eveyone's 'I'd kill to see'? Mine would be Fantomas. I've heard they completely pull it off live, which I have difficulty understanding how it would work.

Jesus christ, I disagree strongly. That's the only show I've walked out of. Not that I paid for it, but still.

On the other hand, I saw Nickel Creek (with Mindy Smith and some Hendrix cover band shite).

Mindy = really nice. If it wasn't cold and wet, and outside, and instead in a coffee house, I would have been her love slave.

Hendrix. I'm 25. Not 17. The blues = the blues. Especially when played by fat white guys trying to be thin black guys.

Nickel Creek = one of the best shows I've ever seen. They are musician's musicians. Perfect playing, singing, performing, and genuine, amusing stage banter. Enjoy 'em while they last; it sounds like they could break up at the end of the summer to pursue individual careers. Highlight: Britney's 'Toxic.'

I know very few people who know of Sia's existance, and their lives are the poorer for it.

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for a female voice.  Starting with an early teenage crush on Nina Simone, there's something about a good female singer that just makes me wilt.  But within this small group of people, there are a very select few that stand out, and Sia is one of them.

I am phenomenally jealous that you saw her live.  Sadly, I find her website incredibly difficult to navigate (could be my current state of mind, though), and I'm unable to find any dates for her tour.

EDIT: Seriously, who puts concert dates under 'Diary'?
I'm nerdy in the extreme, and whiter than sour cream.

I just got back from seeing Ephel Duath. There is now no point in me listening to anything else, ever. I may as well burn all my other CDs, and blow out my eardrums, because no sound will ever be good enough again. I am literally speechless, something which I have never been in my whole life. Just...perfect.

And the best thing was, a power cut stopped the gig a few songs short. It didn't matter, because they could have played for ten years and it still would have been too much and not enough at the same time. It seems the most apocalyptic music needs such a powerful event to bring it to a halt.

Seriously, check out this band. Now.
