General Karma Questions

I just got a Karma! Now what?
First, you do the happy Karma dance. Second, be sure to update your firmware and get the latest version of Rio Music Manager (RMM)... see below for linkage. More questions? Finish reading the FAQ.  Still more questions?  Search the forums.  Still more questions? Post them in the appropriate Karma forum.

Is there a 40 GB Karma? StoreX has a listing for it.  And what's this I hear about a Karma 2?
There is no official 40GB Karma.  And since Rio is now defunct, there will be no Karma 2, or Chroma, or whatever.  Rio's intellectual property now belongs to SigmaTel, which makes players and player guts for other companies.  The hope is that one day, we'll see another company release a very Karma-esque player based on a SigmaTel reference design.  If any new information becomes available, you will definitely see it here.  And in the meantime, if you really want a 40 GB Karma, you're going to have to do it yourself.

Where can I buy a Karma?
There are still new ones floating around the internet, and used/refurb ones available on ebay, etc. Google is your friend.  Caveat emptor.

Where can I find the latest software and firmware for Karma?
Karma Firmware 1.68: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/downloads/Kar…
Rio Music Manager 2.96: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/downloads/rmm…

Can I upgrade the firmware with my Karma sitting in its dock?
Yes, you can.

Will Karma play files I purchase through download music service sites?
Karma plays WMA DRM (Digital Rights Management) files, purchased from sites such as Napster, Musicmatch, Buymusic.com and Puretracks.com (Canada). The Karma does not play tracks purchased through Apple's iTunes music service as Apple does not share its DRM solution. Make sure you've played the DRM'd file at least once in Windows Media Player while connected to the internet, as the file needs to be initialized and confirmed before loading onto the Karma.

Can I use Karma with Linux or my Mac?
Yes. RMMLite supports Linux and OSX. It is developed by resident Java god, Mike Schrag. You may connect to it via your ethernet hook-up on your Karma docking station. Currently, you can transfer files but cannot do firmware upgrades via ethernet. RMMLite resides on a webserver on your Karma, included with each new firmware update. More info may be found at https://rmml.dev.java.net/

When my Karma hard drive is empty, it reads as 18.5GB free, not 20GB. Why?
The 18.5 GB reading is correct. The player is advertised as having 20GB in base-10 math (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), which Rio notes on its website. Windows reads the size in base-2 math (1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). However, this doesn't mean you're getting less space. Calculating in base-10 is an industry standard, common to nearly all desktop hard drives, all MP3 player hard drives and even floppy disks.

Can Karma work as an external hard drive to Windows via Plug and Play?
Sadly, no.  You need to install the included Rio Taxi software to transfer non-music files to and from your Karma.

Can I use the U.S. version of the Karma in Europe?
The AC adapter that comes with the Karma is 110-240V 50/60Hz auto-ranging, so it will work fine in Europe. All you need is an adapter to change the U.S.-style plug into a European-style plug.

How do I access the docklight pulsing features in firmware revision 1.25 and above?
Main Menu => Settings => Dock <br>
Settings are: Static, Pulse with timecode, pulse while charging, pulse to music.

Can I use the line-out and USB ports on the dock without powering the dock via DC?
Yes, but you'll take a significant hit on battery life.

Can I use the Karma to play music or transfer files while it is plugged in and charging, without affecting the charge?
Yes.  The DC power provides for charging the battery as well as powering the Karma itself.

What is the audio quality of Karma?
Power per Channel: 55mW/ch @ 16 ohms. 30mW/ch @ 32 ohms
Dynamic Range: A-weight >96dB
Signal/Noise Ratio: A-Weight >95 dB
THD + Noise: <0.01% up to 10kHz, rising to <0.04% at 20kHz
Frequency Response: 20-20khz +-0.3dB
Tests based on MP3 160bit files.

Speaking of audio quality, I need help with the EQ settings.
You're in luck - our resident sound engineer, Flattop100, put together a EQ Tutorial just for you.

What is that weird rectangular looking slot next to the headphone jack?
That is the slot for a (non-existent) remote.  See the Accessories section for more info.

Where is the serial number on my Karma?
On the bottom end, next to the usb input and the reset hole.

There's no option to turn off password in the Network setup. Any way to do it?
Yes. Just make the password blank.  This will not disable network access, but you will no longer be asked for a password.

Can the Karma ignore the word "The" when alphabetizing artist names? I tried to do a search before asking, I swear! But come on, searching for a thread about the word "the"?
Yeah, seriously. You'll be happy to know that this issue is fixed in firmware 1.68. Be sure you have the most up-to-date firmware and RMM versions for this to work correctly.  Note: All albums and tracks with "the" appear after all the tracks without it (e.g. "The Head on the Door" appears after "Houses of the Holy").  However, it does appear to handle artists correctly (e.g. "The Beatles" appear after "Bauhaus" and before "Blink-182").

What's this "direct jump" feature thingy?
It's a neat little trick the Karma learned in the 1.68 firmware.  Read more about it here.

Can I work out/jog/etc. with my Karma?
The general consensus is "maybe, if you're careful."  Unlike smaller capacity flash players, the Karma is not a solid state device - there are moving parts (in the hard drive) that could be damaged by excessive vibration.  Therefore, hard drive players are not generally recommended for use during major physical activity.  Adventurous users have found that putting the Karma in an armband case provides sufficient shock protection.  However, many people prefer to keep a (relatively inexpensive) flash player in their gym bag instead of risking their (relatively expensive and virtually irreplaceable) Karma.

I hear faint clicking and whirring noises when my Karma starts up/loads a playlist/changes tracks/shuts down, but otherwise it seems to be fine.  Is this normal?
Yes.  The Karma is a hard drive player.  You are hearing the sounds of a healthy, happy hard drive.

Can I copy the music files on my Karma back to my hard drive?
Yes.  In RMM, highlight the files on the Karma that you want to copy, right-click, and select "save as."

I keep hearing about "gapless playback."  Is that like crossfading?  What’s the big deal?
Gapless is not the same as crossfading.  Gapless playback means that there is no artificial gap added between two tracks where there should be none (think the second half of ”Abbey Road”).  In crossfading, the end of one song overlaps slightly with the beginning of the next song (think of a DJ).  Check out Nudel's great explanation (with examples) at http://www.pretentiousname.com/mp3players.

Subject: Bugs/Troubleshooting FAQ
I think my Karma's hard drive is dead.  What should I do?   And why do people keep telling me to hit my Karma?
First, attempt to reset/reboot the the unit. If that doesn't work, try starting up in "recovery mode" by holding down the menu button while turning on the device.  If the text after "hdd:" reads gibberish followed by "call su," then your Karma's hard drive might truly be dead.  Some people, as a last ditch effort before beginning the return/exchange process, have found that hitting their Karma will fix it.  However, that course of action is not officially recommended/endorsed by Rio, Riovolution.org, or the FAQ Guru.   THIS SHOULD BE YOUR LAST RESORT.  HIT YOUR KARMA AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Several people (especially those who use their Karma while walking or running) have reported a particular Karma problem in which an hourglass appears and the Karma refuses to shut down. After resetting the device with a paper clip, it begins to start up, but only to a certain point - the Rio logo will spin fully, but the progress bar at the bottom does not move, and the text locks up at "Starting...".  When holding the Karma to the ear, they report hearing a very quiet repeated clicking sound, followed by a beep every eight seconds or so. When trying to start the Karma in recovery mode, no text is displayed after "hdd:".

These users have reported that hitting the Karma works very well in solving this particular problem.  They suggest holding it in your left hand, with the screen facing you, Karma on the startup screen. Proceed to clap it into your right palm, so that the rubber grip hits your palm, hard enough to make your palm slightly red and to hurt a little. They report that this should set the Karma working again. If not, try slightly harder each time.

UKRE gave us an unofficial (but very well informed) explanation of the nature of this problem.  See it at: http://www.riovolution.org/thread/14

How do I update my firmware?
1. Download Firmware 1.68 (see link above).
2. Hold down the Menu button on the Karma when booting it to get into Recovery Mode.
3. Plug in the USB port to the Karma then start the firmware installer.
4. Select your Karma from the list, then watch the Karma as it goes through the process

Why does my Karma keep rebooting or stopping/pausing playback?
This is a bug in early Karma firmware versions (prior to 1.25). Update your firmware.

When I start my Karma, the logo comes up and spins, but then it reboots and gets stuck in a loop of restarting. The only way to stop it seems to be a soft reset. Help!
Update your firmware.  This may not always work on the first try, so if it doesn't, don't panic.  Give it another try. Also, you may want to reflash and reformat the drive by clicking the "Format" box when the installer comes up.  Obviously, if you reformat, you will lose the files on the Karma, but if your Karma isn't working, this might be your only choice. It may not always work, but there's a pretty good chance that it will.

My Karma has frozen/locked up. How do I make it reboot?
Use a small paper clip, and GENTLY insert it into the hole on the bottom of the player to press the hidden reset button. The paper clip has to go pretty deep (approx 1.5cm or over half an inch) in order to reach it.  If you're having this kind of problem, you might want to check for updated firmware.  Also, check the audio file that was playing at the time of the freeze – there might be something corrupted about the file which the decoder couldn't handle.

How can I check if my MP3 files have errors?
Sometimes problems with the Karma are actually problems with the audio files the Karma is trying to play.   If you hear popping, clicking of other artifacts at the same place in a song every time, your music file likely has errors.
Check your Karma for bad tracks by going to Main Menu -> Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Bad Tracks.

Also, for mp3 files, several file analysis utilities are available.  Try running files through both of these analyzers for the best result: MP3 Test (http://www.shivi.de/MP3Test/) and MP3 Trim (http://www.logiccell.com/~mp3trim/).

My USB connection is not consistent! I sometimes get a "device not recognized" or "device not found" error! Help!
Users have had luck with the following solutions: connecting the dock to an onboard USB port instead of a USB port on the header; connecting the Karma/dock to a powered USB hub; or connecting straight to the Karma instead of the dock.  If you're using a notebook, a PCMCIA USB card might not work with it.  If you have a "usb 2.0 reference voltage" setting, try setting it to high.

For other USB issues, see this thread.

Why do I only get about 5 hours of battery life? Why does my Karma gets really warm while playing?  Why does my Karma's hard drive spin up so often?
You may be affected by the Rio Music Manager Lite (RMML) zero-bitrate bug. Select "About Track" from the menu or hold down the Riostick. If the bitrate field says zero, either re-upload your music using Rio Music Manager or with an updated version of RMML.

What should I do if I drop my player in the water?
You're probably thinking this is a silly question for the FAQ. However, we've had a few folkswho have done exactly this. Sinks and toilets appear to be popular.

First thing: *Do* *Not* *Turn* *On* *The* *Player*

Yes, I know that you want to see if it still works. Resist the temptation. Put it in a dry place, maybe along with a fan or hairdryer, and let the player dry for a few days. When you think it's completely and absolutely dry, leave it longer.Only then should you turn on the player. Dropping a player in the water when powered off is one thing. Powering on a not-fully-dry player, even for only a split second, is quite another and could fry your player for good.

I updated the ID3 tags on some of my audio files, but when I synch with the Karma, the updated tag info doesn't seem to transfer.  Am I missing something?
No. When you edit tag info on the Karma, RMM only modifies the Karma's database, not the music file. So if you edit a tag while it's on the Karma then upload the file to your computer, the file will still have the old tags.

When editing tags for songs on your computer, RMM does update the actual file. you have two options to update tags on the Karma: 1) open the Karma window in Rio Music Manager (RMM) and update the tags, or 2) delete the tracks in question from the Karma and then let them re-synch from your computer to carry over the new tags.

The shuffle feature sure doesn’t seem to shuffle very well.  What gives?
In older firmware versions (prior to 1.68), the shuffle algorithm is biased towards songs you haven’t listened to recently.  Upgrade your firmware for a more random shuffle.

Help! I’m having major Ethernet troubles.
If both green lights stay on constantly (on the back of the dock) when you connect a network cable to the Karma, try using a longer cable. There appears to be a subtle timing issue with the Karma and ethernet. Some people have reported that using a longer cable (~50 feet) allows the Karma to connect.

Other suggestions to solve the problem of ethernet not connecting (manifested by two constant green lights on the back of the dock):
  • connect to a 10Mbit hub, switch, or router rather than 100Mbit;
  • connect directly to the computer's network port, not through a hub, router, or switch;
  • use a crossover cable, rather than a straight through ethernet cable;
  • double-check your firewall settings (both on the router and on the computer), or eliminate the firewall altogether (at least temporarily);
  • try a different port on your router, hub, or switch;
  • manually set your connection to 10MHz speed (if your NIC, hub, switch, or router gives you that option).

I want to connect to my Karma via ethernet, but it won't play nice with my firewall.  What gives?
The Karma uses TCP for transmission, and as such normal communications shouldn't be affected by a firewall. However, the Karma's discovery (announcement to the network) uses SSDP broadcasts (uPnP) on port 1900. There is a known exploit involving the uPnP service in windows that allows a malformed packet to incite a DOS/DDOS attack from a compromised machine. Essentially the attacker sends a false uPnP signal with a faked IP and the client starts DOSing the IP in an attempt to communciate with it.

What to do?  Use fixed IP on the Karma (not DHCP) and open your firewall to UDP packets over port 1900. You could also just add the IP of the Karma to "trusted locations" or open your firewall to all transmissions from that IP, but it isn't necessary if you are still concerned about security.

Note that detection of the Karma still seems to be delayed for some reason; it can take as long as a few minutes to see the Karma in the left hand sidebar of RMM. This might have something to do with the fact that the Karma doesn't always use port 1900 for discovery; some users have reported that their firewall has shown UDP probes from that IP to ports 1757, 1800, 1817, 2737, 2811, and 2966. However, if you open port 1900 it WILL eventually be detected. A workaround to this secondary issue would, of course, be to just open your firewall to all packets from the Karma's IP address (another reason to use fixed IP).

Subject: Battery Basics
What kind of battery does Karma have?
Karma has a non-replaceable Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery, identical to the ones found in most other mp3 players, cell phones and a wide range of electronic products.

How long does a full battery charge last?
Rio advertised the battery lasting 15 hours per full charge, using the following criteria: 128 mp3, Volume: 15, EQ: Off. The reality is that this battery has tested at about 16 hours with these criteria.   Cold weather and/or a backlight set to a high or always-on setting will dramatically shorten battery life, as will sitting the player in an unpowered cradle.

How should I care for my battery when I first get my Karma?
When you first get your Karma, it will be at slightly less than a half charge. As per the included instructions, charge it for five hours. Then, fully discharge and charge your battery the first few times to properly calibrate it, helping to maximize your potential battery cycle length. After that, you may do partial charges without any adverse impact, meaning you won't need to fully charge/discharge each time.

If I won't be using my Karma for an extended period, how should I leave the battery?
For long term storage, leave your battery about 40% charge, which reduces long-term battery degradation to approximately 4% per year.

If my Karma is connected to AC, will it still drain the battery?
No. When AC is connected, Karma is powered directly from the power supply unit (charger).

Can I overcharge my battery by leaving it plugged in to AC too long?
No. You have nothing to worry about if you forget to unplug your AC after the player is fully charged.

How long does it take to charge my battery?
From empty, it takes about 2 hours to get to ~80-90% full. It will then trickle charge the last 10% or so, which can take another hour or so.

What is the battery life of Karma?
Like other Li-Ion products, a good rule of thumb is about 500 cycles at 100% (don't worry, partial charges count as partial cycles). After 500 cycles, it will reduce to about an 80% charge. Based on your average daily use, do the math. This battery should last you many, many years.

Do different file formats affect the battery differently?
Yes. MP3 and WMA are the most efficient, FLAC is next and, finally, Ogg Vorbis is the least efficient. Also, the lower the bit rate (and thereby quality) of a file, the less impact it will have on the battery.

Why does my Karma's battery run down rather quickly when connected to USB?
The USB chip in the Karma takes quite a bit of power, and requires more battery power to run than regular operation of the player.

Anything else affect battery life?
Some of the audio features do - such as crossfader, graphic EQ, stereo separation, AGC, etc. Basically, each one of these uses up a little extra battery power when it is turned on. Note that the EQ only draws power for each band whose gain is not 0dB. So you can optimise battery life by adjusting centre frequencies and widths so that you don't need to use as many bands to achieve the desired effect.

Bitrate also affects battery life for two reasons: firstly, decoders require more CPU cycles at higher bit rates (Ogg Vorbis is highly bit-rate dependent, mp3 less so), and secondly, the disk will have to spin up more often at higher bitrates. Ogg Vorbis and WMA both have much better compression capability for the same sound quality than mp3, and high bitrates (eg 192kbits plus) in these formats are probably unnecessary anyway.

Is the Karma battery replaceable? Does Rio offer a battery replacement program?
No.  Although a reasonably tech-savvy person could probably replace the battery without damaging the unit (if they don’t mind voiding the warranty), no replacement batteries are currently available in the US, from Rio or from third party vendors.  Rio Japan had an affordable battery replacement program (about $37USD), but with Rio's demise, the best bet is probably to find someone selling a broken Karma for parts.

Why can’t I charge the Karma via USB?  I have other gadgets that do this…
Charging via USB is not possible for Karma. The USB specification allows for a device to draw 500mA, while the Karma requires 2000mA - there simply is not enough current provided by the USB host for the Karma to charge from it. Indeed, the extra drain caused by activating the Karma's USB chip will cause the battery to drain faster if it is not powered while connected via USB.

Subject: Accessories FAQ
Where can I find a suitable case for my Karma?
The official "case" for the Karma was a felt pouch.  While it was great for earbuds, pocket change, or very small rocks, it wasn't much of a case for an expensive DAP.  The following are third-party cases suggested by users of this forum:
  • For those of you with lots of money to burn, check out the fancy custom cases from Vaja Cases
  • A.L.S. GSP1 GameBoy Carrying Case
  • A.L.S. GSP5 GameBoy Carrying Case
  • A.L.S. NGC1 GameCube Game Case
  • Caselogic MPC2
  • Caselogic MDC2 (may not be found in U.S.)
  • Fellowes Body Glove MP3/Tune Sports Belt (Model #75550) with attached neoprene belt
  • Fellowes Body Glove MP3/Tune Sports Pouch (Model #75551) with belt-clip
  • Sony MD Armband Case
  • Nyko SafeCase SP (available at GameStop)

Where can I find another power supply unit for my Karma?
For the "official" versions, try the S2G Rio Audio Store.  If you'd prefer to go it alone, you need a 5V Regulated Centre-Positive 2000mA Power Supply Unit/Charger.  There used to be a Digital Camera Power Adapter available at Radio Shack (Model #273-1696) that had been verified to work by members of this forum IF THE APPROPRIATE SETTINGS ARE SELECTED.  Otherwise, you run the risk of frying the Karma.  The correct settings are: 5V regulated, Use type 'A' connector, Tip: positive polarity (+)

This item is not officially endorsed by us or by Rio, though Rio tech support has reportedly been known to recommend it.  Use at your own risk.

How can I play the Karma in my car?
If your car stereo does not have a line out, a cassette adapter is probably the best solution.  Another option is a FM transmitter, but these tend to be less reliable and offer poorer sound quality based on user reports. To plug the Karma into your car's cigarette lighter, try Radio Shack's 60-Watt DC-to-AC Power Inverter (Cat #22-144), which allows you to plug your charger in to your cigarette lighter.  This charger has been reported to work by other Karma users.  Another possible car charger from Radio Shack is the "universal" Sprint cellphone charger (SKU 273-1290) Use at your own risk.

Know any good car mounts for the Karma?
Try this one: Freeway PDA Holder

Is there a remote for the Karma?  I WANT A REMOTE!
We know, we know.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like a remote will be available any time soon EVAR.  If you consider a remote to be an absolute must-have, then the Karma is probably not the best digital audio player for you.

Can I buy an extra dock/cradle for the Karma?  I WANT A DOCK!
Try the S2G Rio Audio Store. Otherwise, you might try EBay.

I lost my USB cable.  Where can I find another one?
This cable is most easily found at your local digital camera specialty shop. This particular kind of USB cable is most often used with digital cameras, so this is the best place to find one as an accessory. Your local Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. may also have it, but they often overcharge for it. Same goes for the S2G Rio Audio Store.

What about a screen protector?  I don't want my Karma to get all scratched...
Best bet is to buy PDA screen protectors (static cling is better than adhesive) and cut them to fit the Karma.  Sadly, the laser-cut custom screen protectors for the Karma from Protect Your Karma are no longer available.

Subject: Rio Music Manager (RMM) and Rio Music Manager Lite (RMML) FAQ
How can I set up a full synch between my Karma and RMM?
When creating a Synch Profile, select the following settings:
- Content Selection: All Music
- Content Deletion: Never
- Content Cycling: Fill it up
This will add all new music to your Karma every time you add it to your library, remove nothing and ensure your desktop and Karma are in synch.

Why can't I use Rio Music Manager with the ethernet instead of the USB?
One possible answer is that you have a personal firewall enabled. Examples are the built-in firewall in Windows XP, ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall, and McAfee Firewall. Such firewalls prevent UPnP from working between Rio Music Manager and the Rio Karma. Disable them and try again.

What is this I hear about a zero-bitrate bug in RMML?
See the Bugs/Troubleshooting section.

Can I use RMM to transfer my .M3U playlists to the Karma?
Yes.  Any playlists you want RMM to recognize and transfer to your player must be in the root directory of your library source.  For example, if the source directory for your music library (the folder that RMM scans) is "…/My Music," your playlists should be directly in your "My Music" folder (not ".../My Music/Artist/Album...").  RMM will recognize the presence of all playlists in the library (including those in subdirectories), but it will only be able to read and deal with playlists that are located in the root directory.

Subject: Other Questions
Um, what happened to Riovolution.com? That site had more users, and it looked a lot better.
Sadly, our beloved Site Admin AgentM let us fall into a state of benign neglect.  That would have been fine, since we were largely self-policing, but then some asshat managed to crack AgentM's account, and began to wreak havoc on our peaceful little community - spamming us with ads for his lame website, editing our posts to say things we never said, and banning forum regulars for no reason.  So, thanks to the benevolence of Ankle and ameyer17, we've made a new home here.  We're going to try to bring over as much of the important info (and all the coolest people) to the new site.  And one day we might even get around to making it less fugly.

Is Riovolution a DNNA/Rio-owned community?
No. Riovolution.com is/was a community independent of DNNA/Rio, as is Riovolution.org. However, it is recognized by Rio and visited by former Rio Engineers, other Rio employees and Rio Beta Testers, all of whom help users on a volunteer basis. Along with these people, a lot of Karma owners like to help out other Karma owners. You'll find this forum doesn't embrace flaming, angry posts, unsupported attacks, and people who are rude or unkind to others. So, think not only about what you want to say, but how you want to say it, before posting. People tend to be nice, polite and helpful. Keep this in mind when you post, as the people who respond to you are all volunteering their time. They prefer to respond to those who don't take this for granted.

What's the deal with the cat pictures?
If you have to ask, I'll never be able to explain it to you.
