Subject: Need Turntable pre-amp recommendations.
So I was thinking about that short stack of LPs I got sitting in the closet and decided it was time to dust off the old turntable (a super-cheapo player I bought at The Wiz in lower Manhattan back in 1991).

Problem: I have no stereo system to plug it into and I need a pre-amp so I can plug it into my PCs soundcard (stock Realtek AC'97 card that shipped with the 'puter).  I've got some stuff I'm aching to encode (e.g. Joy Division Substance and The Peel Sessions SFPS013 from 1/31/79).

I know I need one that does RIAA Equalization and good S/N ratio, but I also don't want to spend a shitload of money on it.

Thx.

Given that it's a super cheapo turntable and a super cheapo sound card, you'll be wanting a super cheapo preamp :)

Seriously.

If you want to enjoy some old LP goodness, go buy yourself a Chaintech AV-710, and find some way to pipe in the turntable.  You may even be able to use a software mixer as your 'pre-amp', and you'll definitely enjoy the sound difference.

If you're looking for something a little more hardy, look at anything based on the Envy24.  If the Supermacro is sex in a box, the Envy24 is sex on silicon.  There are a few products out there based on their chip (the AV-710 being one of them), but if you're okay with spending a bit of money, I cannot recommend enough anything from M-Audio.  I've completely fallen in love with their computer audio line, and I'm a freshly-converted USB sound'card' lover.  Beware, though, their prices are a bit steep, especially if you're just a casual music listener.
I'm nerdy in the extreme, and whiter than sour cream.

I ended up picking up an old receiver for $10 at a yard sale.  Works just fine.

Thx.
