Subject: Flood o' spam.
Why does spam still exist?  Really.  Do people actually buy products from spamming companies that infest the internet like a swarm locusts?  I really don't get it.  Does it actually work?

i'm moderating path finder's forum (mac app) and i've seen this new trend which is users just saying "thank you very much for the info" or "great info now i can operate my computer better", with no links whatsoever. these look a bit like bot posts (poor grammar and punctuation) but i can't seem to find what's the purpose.

The purpose is simple. They post one of those first to see if maybe they'll get flagged. If not, then they'll start posting topics with spam links. I've been seeing it a lot, but it should be less common now that we're manually handling registration (not really a big time sink for the one weekly registrant, if that often)

i see... i always track their post history before making a decision but sometimes i have trouble guessing if it's a decent user just saying thanks. i guess i'll hold on the ban and just delete the posts in case of doubt.
