Subject: Rio Music Manager on Windows 7
Hi,

Been awhile. Great to see this forum still here with die-hard fans like myself.  :-)

I got a new computer recently with Windows 7 Home (32 bit). I'm trying to install Rio Music Manager but when it gets to "Installing New Services" it keeps coming up with:

"error 1923. Service Rio MSC Manager (RioMSC) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services" and forces me to abort.

I've tried right clicking and doing "Run as Administrator" and going to Properies > Compatibility and selecting "Run as Administrator", by default it already has "Run in Windows Service pack 2 compatiblity mode". But no luck.  :-/

I already have UAC disabled too. And I enabled the Adminitsrator account by doing "net user administrator /active:yes" based on a guide. But whilst logged on the Admin account I get the same issue. I'm liking Windows 7 but this 'user privileges' and 'you are not an admin' stuff is getting to be a pain with some programs I'm finding.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Wow, this isn't great news - I still dual-boot into WinXP when necessary - I was hoping to do away with that soon and transition to 7, but I'll have to rethink that strategy.

I can't think of a reason this shouldn't be working, other than flat-out compatibility errors. Maybe RMM just won't run on 7?

One possible solution might be to install XP via VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) I'm not sure if the hardware will play along, but it's better than re-partitioning your machine to squeeze in an XP partition.

What version are you installing?  I was under the impression that no drivers were installed as part of 2.96, but I guess I'm wrong.

Hi I worked it out!

I was trying to just use the individual install files in the setup_files folder like riomm exe etc. but when I right-clicked and did Run As Admin on the overall "Setup Wrapper" it seemed to all go through and come up as Completed. So now I have Rio Music Manager!

The next issue was when I plugged my Rio Karma in and it didn't come up on Music Manager but I found my old RIO CD and found I had most stuff from the CD except "Rio Taxi" setup. Installing just that via the CD made my Rio show up I think. And I've managed to transfer a few files OK. So all is well it appears so far.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hope my experience will be of use to others.

Sai, Rio Taxi is strictly for storing files on the Karma like an externall HDD, not for getting music you can actually listen to.  That's awesome that you have RMM working on Win7.  Just get the ethernet set up and I suspect you'll be synching in no time.

Oh I guess it was a fluke then? Odd. Perhaps there were some other drivers in the Taxi software that jumpstarted the Music manager to recognise the docked Karma or maybe not and my PC is just weird! I never actually or have since used the Taxi software for anything other than to install it. But yeah I have RMM working now and displaying the music from my PC, the Rio Karma and the files on it shows up in RMM and I transfered files from PC via drag and drop etc. via RMM so pretty happy :D I never did try out Karma's ethernet thingy but don't think I'll be needing it yet.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit here now, and RMM 2.96 works fine, but the MSC drivers are a lost cause. I use ethernet to transfer music now. It is a bit fiddly to get the connection working, and a bit slow, but it works!
