Subject: Carbon not recognized by WinXP
Running WinXP Pro SP3 - in MTP mode, the Rio Carbon shows up as hardware under Windows Portable Devices but not as a hard disk or portable device in Control Panel or Explorer. How can I get the PC to recognize and work with it?  I've reinstalled the software and updated the driver but with no success.

Update: I switched the mode to MSC and Windows no longer sees it as a portable device, but as a USB Mass Storage Device and as a hard disk.  However, although Explorer recognizes it as a connected drive, when attempting to access it, Windows tells me, "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".  Right-click-Properties shows 0 bytes.  Explorer responds to anything related to this drive extremely slowly.

Update: I followed the directions at
http://support.rioaudio.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&… ("Troubleshoot - Player Not Detected On PC - WIndows 2000 & XP").  The result is that it now shows up in Explorer as a drive with a little blue Forge logo and the name RIO CE2100 (E:).  However, the drive is still inaccessible (I/O device error and 0 bytes).

I suspect a problem with Windows rather than the Carbon.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Perhaps you could delete the device in the Device Manager whilst booted into safe mode? This should nuke it from Windows and force it to reload the drivers. Hopefully.

Thanks for the suggestion, flattop.  Been there, done that.  I uninstalled it and did a complete reinstall, after which Explorer recognized it as a drive complete with Forge icon.  The drivers are supposed to be built into WinXP, and Device Manager says it's operating normally.  It seems there's something that prevents the Carbon's disk from being accessed.  Maybe it's just shy, or can't answer the phone right now?
