Subject: Rio Karma compatibility with Windows 7 (64 bit)
Hi

Just clean installed an upgrade from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64bit.  So far have managed to get the Rio Music Manager to install (v 2.90) but it is struggling to recognise the Karma when plugged in to a USB port.  Either the computer completely ignores it or I get a message to say that I don't have an up to date driver. Everything was fine before the upgrade to Win 7.  So far a Google search has proved fruitless, can anyone point me to a driver which will enable me to make my Karma talk to my computer again?

Thanks

No 64-bit driver was ever written for the Karma, so your only option is ethernet, assuming you have a dock.

I haven't tried it, but I've been VERY impressed with Sun's Virtual Box. Worth a shot.

I tried RMM under the WIndowns XP mode but it keeps locking up after a while on the full scan - so I have to add just a few folders of the specific music I want to add to the Karma.

RMM seems fine for me in W7(64), it managed to scan 30GB of music.  Just can't get it to recognise the Karma through USB.

Can anyone give me some basic instructions on how to link up the Karma using the ethernet.  Can I just plug it straight into the laptop's ethernet port via the dock?  How does RMM recognise it?

Sorry for the basic questions, the manual doesn't really cover it very well.

Have you got those 3 little drivers for Karma so that your USB device driver recognizes it?
Names like riouniv.cat; riouniv.sys; riouniv.inf. Pull them off your old xp machine that you were using previously.

Also, no you can't patch to the Ethernet port with a straight through, although I've heard people can do it with a crossover patch cable. Otherwise, you need to go through your router.

Going through a router is the best way to go.  Make sure the Karma is set to DHCP (meaning it pulls its IP address from the router) and that you set a password.  Disconnect the usb cable from the dock, connect the ethernet cable, and fire up RMM.  RMM should prompt you for the password you set on the Karma.  Then sync away.

Subject: Virtual "XP Mode" Worked for Me
I'm running Win7 Ultimate x64 and found the following steps were necessary to get all my RMM/Karma functionality to work:

1. Go to MS site and confirm your PC can run virtualization mode; most multi-core CPUs are ok but virtualization may need to be enabled in BIOS

2. If you're good to go, d/l and install whatever MS says you need to run XP Mode

3. Once set up, run XP Mode; takes a while to start the first time.  Note that it's exactly the same as running another PC; you'll get nags about installing antivirus and XP updates

4. Go to DNNA site and d/l Rio Music Manager and Rio Drivers installers

5. Install both above, launch RMM and scan your music library.  Note that your music library is probably in your "Win7" file directory so you'll need to navigate there during RMM setup

6. The last trick is getting the USB to the Karma to connect.  Do this by clicking on the "USB" text in the XP Mode window top menu.  It will drop down a list of things you can attach including "Rio Karma"!

Hi, I'm only on the Windows 7 32 bit version but I also didn't see my karma coming up on Music Manager and I think Windows wasn't able to install drivers when it saw the "New hardware" when plugging the Karma into the dock for the first time either. But on my Rio CD was a piece of software I hadn't installed yet called Rio Taxi and after installing that it showed up. Here's a direct download link from my hostspace temporarily for you, its about 6.20mb taken from the CD, let me know if installing it helps at all:

As flattop has said, you can just use Virtual Box or MS's virtual PC 2007, so long has you have a copy of XP.

The only reason I bring this up is because I"m not sure that XP Mode is available on Home Premium and because there are a lot of Intel processors that do not support hardware virtualization, and XP Mode requires that feature.

Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Box do not.  If you go this route, you should probably try to make the HD that has all your music visible in the virtual OS.  I don't recall the method to do this (been a while), but it is possible.

Life would be so much easier if someone would release a high capacity modern DAP that was as good as the Karma.
It's gotta happen one of these days, right?

keep the dream alive! i know i do. i keep hoping and waiting...but in the meantime, that is why i got my karma repaired and why i'm contemplating getting another one for a rainy day. though my creative zen vision m is a good backup, and has a few positives the karma doesn't (no protruding buttons/scroll wheels, easier, for me anyway, to transfer playlists from my audio player to the mp3 player...), i'm hoping one day, one player can get everything right.

You are correct, Win7 Home Premium and below does not have XP mode.

RMM 2.06 works fine in Windows 7 64 bit, but it is the USB drivers that are a problem. I opted to use the ethernet interface to avoid the USB problems.

Speaking of XP mode, how does one "activate" it? I assume you're referring to the XP virtual machine built into Win7 Pro?

My mom has some word processing software she wants to use, and I can't get it going.

flatty, it appears you have to download the XPMode image and Windows Virtual PC from MS, and then walk through the installs. The URL is http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

I'm trying it out on a test install of Win7 myself.
