To the OP, if you have a Karma with a bad hard disk, then I seriously recommend a CF or SD conversion. This thread has all the information that you need.

I have done this conversion twice now (my Karma, and my wife's) and as long as you are careful with the disassembly and reassembly of your Karma, it is a doddle to do.

Subject: Rio Karma Sealed NIB
I've got a brand new karma sealed in its original package.  I've had it for years.  What would this sell for?

I'd say $100.

I've got a broken Rio Karma or two lying around, I decided to make the jump to the iPod but it never sounded as good as the Karma, and the way it does playlists and the iTunes software really put me off portable music altogether, to the extent that aside some music on my N95 8GB I rarely listen to anything when I'm out and about nowadays (I do enjoy having Spotify on my mobile though).
Anyway, I came here looking for hard drive diagnostics software, one of my 1TB hard drives just failed (so glad I have two of them set to RAID 1 (mirrored) else my irreplaceable mission-critical work data would be in danger right now, so I'm going to go looking for that now (I'm thinking if the drive still works I'll run RAID 1 with 3 drives).

Subject: Used Karma
I have finally, and with regret, decided to give up my Karma. The hassle of trying to getting it working with Win7, plus the fact that I'm not listening to as much music as I used to and my lack of any sort of ability that would enable me to expand it beyond its original 20Gb, has brought me to this decision.

However I realise that there are still plenty of people out there who love them, and if anyone here in the UK is interested then I would like to see it go to a good home. It is, I believe, a 2004 model from the serial number on the bottom, and is in pretty decent external condition - there are no scratches on the screen, it has never been opened up and the joystick and wheel are both intact and in working order; just a bit of the finish has rubbed off around the back of the case. I haven't charged it in ages, so I don't know what the battery would be like, but it otherwise worked perfectly, even after it was in my car when I totalled it back in 2007. I still have the charging dock, box and all the other necessary bits and bobs.

I'm UK-based, and am not interested in the hassle of shipping it abroad - if anyone is interested in what is in all probability a fairly uncommon item by now then I will accept a sensible offer. Mail me at chigginbottom(at) btinternet.com if you are interested

sad but understandable. with win 7 you're limited to management over ethernet and it's a bit slow.

btw it is pretty easy to upgrade the storage. all you need is a CF adapter and a CF card. I spent around $50 to upgrade to 32gb compact flash. you can go 64 or 128gb even with PATA style SSDs but it gets pricey.

getting an iPod now?

Subject: Win 7
You know, I'm running Windows 7 on my laptop, and had no problems hooking up the Karma via USB and getting the machine to recognize it - even RMM works just fine. It may be because I have an el-cheapo laptop with 32-bit Win 7 rather than 64 - I know running it on my desktop with Vista Pro was impossible to the point where I thought I was going to have to set up a whole separate WinXP-based computer just for the Karma.

That said, there's a guy on eBay right now selling two "factory refurbished in sealed box" Karmas. He wants $215 apiece for them, which is a little spendy when you consider the battery situation, but I thought I'd come by and mention it.

Hi dapreview; no, I don't do anything that begins with a small i - I would rather gouge out my own eyes with a rusty teaspoon, dip them in Fiery Jack and eat them than go down that route! I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 which, with a 32Gb SD card inserted, will hold enough for me to be going on with.

Winhowill - my desktop is running 64-bit, so that put the mockers on it for me - I'm not inclined to start setting up another environment on there just to run RMM.
