Subject: Windows 7 RC1
Hey kids,

I dl'd RC1 - I'm currently running XP, and would love to upgrade. During installation, it hangs at the last step. Is anyone else trying the RC/having this issue?

I'm installing off an image on the HD, which should work in theory. My next steps are to 1)Reformat the Win7 partition 2) Install off an ISO.

Any thoughts?

Just downloaded it. Why didn't you burn a CD?

The first disc I burned wouldn't boot, so I tried different software for the second effort. That gave me a write error before it was even done. I downloaded again, thinking the ISO was corrupt, but no deal - it just burns badly.

I did a little searching on the "official Win7 forum." It sounds like several people are having issues with the ISO being messy, even though it will load in different mounting software (Daemon Tools, etc).

I also saw that people were having success when they did 3 things:

Turn on SATA AHCI in BIOS
Turn on native sata mode, not legacy.
Unplug ALL USB devices when your computer reboots for installation.

It sounds like Win7 has a hard time (i.e. hangs) when it installs hardware DURING the Windows installation.
Hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to play with all this and let you know.

I'll be upgrading build 7000 when I have the time.

I dunno, personally I'm pretty happy running 7000 for the time being. It works fine, and I'd rather not do two fresh installs before I have something I can keep for a while...

I'll be editing the ISO to allow an upgrade.

Wow, nothing but sour grapes here.

The install took after I unplugged all the USB devices, but I couldn't get my NIC card drivers to load. (Oddly enough, these loaded just fine during the beta installation months ago   ) So I thought I'd give installation one more shot, this time enabling the SATA stuff listed above.

Stalled.

Made sure USB was unplugged.

Stalled.

Turned all the SATA stuff back OFF.

Stalled.

So after 5+ hours of fooling around with the install and now having a boot loader with XP and 4 copies of Win7RC...I'm still running XP. This is EXTREMELY frustrating and confusing. The beta installed like a dream...I wonder what changed.

I might give it one more go, but honestly, I have better things to do. Like play with my new Lenovo S10.

Subject: Great Success!
Well, after poking around on the official forums for a bit, I found that I wasn't the only one with this problem. We all had a Gigabyte motherboard in common; by plugging the root HD into the RAID ports instead of the standard SATA ports, it worked.

Seems to me they downgraded the drivers in the install package, since I didn't have this problem with the Beta.

Anywho, I'm up with 7 and absolutely loving the Start Menu and Taskbar (I hated hated hated the one in XP, btw).

After a couple driver updates, everything has been performing relatively flawlessly - I woke up at 3:47am to a BIOS beepbeepbeepbeep....rather than dinking with it, I simply shut off the machine. Windows caught some corrupted sectors on my documents drive and repaired them - I had been running the Adobe updater, and my guess is that it threw up some how.

(That's not the first time that's happened - I've come home to a beeping machine twice in 3 years.)

So I'm not leaving 7 on on it's own for a while yet, but loving it while I'm using it.

Is anyone using anti-virus or firewall software with it yet? I'm behind a NAT, but without either AV or FW. Suggestions?

I don't have any suggestions, exactly, but I've been fine since December with both the Beta and the RC with no firewall/antivirus programs save for those which came with Windows. Everything's peachy, really. (I know macky uses kaspersky, by the way.)

I don't want to Install it. I have it here with my code but I just found out I will lose my Dreamscene content if I install 7?!??!? BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MS!

Yea, yea I KNOW I am probably the only person ON THE PLANET that actually used DS content for more then 10 minutes... but I like it damnit! hehehe

(No I am not 100% serious, the urge to see 7 is stronger then my like for DS)

For what it's worth, Win7 slideshows through pictures for the desktop...one every 15 minutes or something. That may just be on the included Themes, however - I haven't tried to set up my own.

Now that I think about it, I know that Vista supported SOME types of video playback on the desktop. I would imagine that 7 does as well.

Vista supported it ONLY through Vista ULTIMATE EXTRAS. MS has said there will be no more extras and in fact when you install 7 over Vista it REMOVES the extras including Dreamscene (video wallpaper) content.
I have a Vista machine hooked up to a projector in my entertainment room (basement).
When I have parties people are always gaga over the Video Desktop in Windows Vista. I even had one person ask me "Is this a Mac?!?!" Because of course people think only Macs do cool shit like that.
Way to blow, MS.
